"Bad Girl" is my favorite song and ranks among her best and most haunting videos. I also love "Erotica," "Deeper and Deeper," "Thief of Hearts," "Waiting," "Rain," "Secret Garden," "Why's It So Hard" and "In This Life," as well as "The Up-Down Suite" (although I prefer "Goodbye to Innocence"). Definitely overlooked by critics and me for many years. It's Madonna at her boldest.

I love 'Erotica'.It's a dark, haunting album that sounds as if it was recorded primarily for the underground nightclubs in New York. The songs are hypnotic and "rave-like",and this is Madonna's most committed dance album. The title track takes you through a bizarre S&M fantasy. On "Deeper and Deeper",Madonna seems to be celebrating 70s Disco music."Why's It So Hard" is an interesting reggae-flavored track. Then there's the steamy "Where Life Begins",several hip-hop influenced tracks ("Did You Do It?","Waiting","The Secret Garden") and a couple of superb slower tracks ("Bad Girl" is the best). It's a strong, consistent album that was a radical departure from her previous albums 'Like A Prayer' and 'I'm Breathless'.

I've always loved this album. Next to "Like A Prayer" and
"Ray of Light" it's one of her best albums. There aren't
many songs on there I ever skip.

I think it was the whole SEX book backlash and her rather
too provocative stance at the time that caused critics as
well as regular fans to tune out for a while.

Unjust. Since it's a very cohesive album and not as vulgar
as it was made out to be at the time. "Rain" got some more
airplay at the time, but if it had been released from one
of her previous records it would have perhaps been one of
her biggest hits ever. Incredible track.

Same thing still haunted "bedtime stories" which was also
hugely overlooked by people.

Fcuz, this was Madonna, so she did get some decent play on
tv and radio, but somehow it was different from the way
they treated her before. As if she's crossed some invisible
line, which everyone has unanimously agreed not to cross.

It wasn't really said in so many words, but there was a lot
of tension surrounding her releases at that time.

Things started to pick up a bit again at that time but I
still feel that a lot of people just didn't check her out
at that time cuz they were still a bit "thru" with her.

It wasn't really [from my point of view] until she had
released "Take A Bow" and made Evita that people started
to take notice again and somehow [chose to] forget the
things that came before it.

Compared to "Music", "Erotica" is a masterpiece, that's
for sure.

Yeah,Madonna suffered a slight backlash in late 1992 that lasted throughout 1993.Her image back then was really provocative and sexual, and the 'Sex' book was the last straw for many people. It sold incredibly well, but it received scathing reviews, and in 1993,there were alot of "Is Madonna Over?" and "Has Madonna finally gone too far?"-type editorials and articles. As a result, her 'Erotica' album was overlooked.Even Madonna herself admitted that she shouldn't have released the album around the same time as the book (and let's not even mention "Body Of Evidence"...lol).

But Madonna decided to fight the backlash. In late 1993,she embarked on her "Girlie Show" tour and it was amazing! This tour was more exciting than the 'Blonde Ambition' tour, and I can't understand why she didn't do a full-fledged Amercan tour. She did a few US dates, then quickly took the tour overseas.

This is the only Madonna CD I've never purchased. I 've heard it many times, and it has never made me want to buy it. Which is kinda strange since 'Deeper and Deeper' has been one of my all-time favorite Madonna songs since I first heard it...

What I truly don't get is the song "Rain" It drives me up the walls. It's so radiolite and formulatic. It grates on my nerves like some of the 'best-worst' Prince does (see "Mr Happy" or "Push It Up")

Ah well, we can't like everything, I guess!

Much like "Bedtime Stories", it works well as an album but didn't have a lot of pop hits, you know what I mean? It works great as one solid album. Still, I love all the songs (except for the sorry remix thingy "Did You Do It") and have to say my favorite is "Words". I also must say that I think "Up Down Suite" kicks the ass of "Goodbye To Innocence". Very funky and cool. Should have made the album (I realize it is almost impossible considering space but why not scrap "Did You Do It",which was hardly a Madonna track). -

There is a version of the album without that song on it. Just look for the one without the parental advisory label on it. wink

omg No way! I never knew this. I figured it would be right up your alley.

That said, I LOVE this album. It's competition for my favorite of hers. It gets sluffed off because of the provocative subject matter, but most of it is really sincere and serious. I love the uber-bass and chilling soundscapes. I love her pillow talk/rapping that she started with Justify My Love and Rescue Me. I love the FUCK YOU attitiude. I love the videos and the tour. I love the SEX book. Like Moonbeam said, it's Madonna at her boldest. Totally uncompromising and brilliant.

Funny story.

My mom had always opposed my musical taste when growing up. She had major issues with Prince and Madonna in particular because she knew their image and the adult content of much of their work. But in 1992, she felt it went too far. She was aware of the SEX book. She was aware of Sexy MF. Since becoming a born again Christian, she stopped listening to most 'secular' music and her older sister had a big influence on her. I remember at my cousins' weddings, my Aunt Kathie would go up to the DJ and command, "Anything BUT rap, metal, Prince and Madonna." So this rubbed off my mom as well. I remember coming home from school one day to find my mom waiting in my room. She had a shoebox with all my Prince and Madonna cd's and any others with a parental advisory. She was like, "Nate, we gotta talk. I can't allow this in my house." She pulled out the newest Madonna cd, "Erotica?? This is bad news Nate? Why Is It So Hard? Deeper and Deeper? You can do better than that Nate." LOL. She totally picked out the wrong songs without even listening to them just based on the titles. Now if she had taken issue with "Thief of Hearts" or "Where Life Begins" I might understand. She demanded that I get rid of them immediately. At first she suggested I sell them and then was like, "No, I don't want these polluting another young mind either." Her solution was to burn them at which point I started screaming and crying at her. I yelled, "I'll just buy them again and hide them from you. This is MY music and you can't make me change. I'm fucking 16 years old. I can think for myself!" It was an emotional turning point. Years later, she's really lightened up and now Prince is her favorite artist! lol She just dances and laughs along with Sexy MF and Gett Off. It's nice that she's mellowed because my mom is naturally funny and foul mouthed. I think God wants her to be herself rather than a mirror of her older sister. Amen. pray

Great thread, Chico.

I recently pulled this off the shelf too. I like to listen to it in the fall, as it takes me make to the fall days I listened to it when it was first released. Prince's symbol album came out at the same time. I didn't have a cd player in my car then, so I made a cassette that alternated tracks from the 2 discs. Mn Name is Prince/Sexy MF, then Erotica. 2 the 9's, then Fever. I really enjoyed getting into those 2 albums like that.

Anyway... The one song that I never really got into was "Thief of Hearts", although I do like the "Stop bitch! Now sit your ass down!" line. I remember a critic in the Rocky Mountain News dismissed the album, saying "Rain" was the only track of any value. And while I love "Rain", (particularly "The Girlie Show" version), I do think it feels a little out of place on "Erotica", because it is so polished.

Overall, I'd say it falls mid-range in my ranking of Madonna favorites.

this is on the list of my all time favorite pop records! it sounds kinda dated now...you know, all the early 90's lounge-house music...but i just love this disc. the nostalgia always makes me smile but there is so much more to this cd than nostalgia. it is a classic pop recording...deeper and deeper, bad girl, erotica, waiting, thief of hearts, rain and how could i leave out words...i'm gonna listen to it right now!

thanks chico!

This is a decent album, but there are 3 or 4 filler tracks imo. For that reason, I couldn't put it in the ranks of Like a Prayer, Bedtime Stories, or Ray of Light- because those albums seem more consistent to me. The really good tracks on Erotica are really good, though.
