Ofra Hazaa. Who's wit me on Middle Eastern House?

GALBI.

Hypnotic rhythms, minor-key eastern horns, angelic voice, WOW.

And hey - she appeared in "Pump up the volume" by MARRS.

If you like that, I highly recommend that you check out his earlier material if you haven't already -- specifically, Bollywood Flashback and Magic Touch (an album of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan songs that Bally produced).

The soundtrack to Yara, by Rabih Abou-Khalil is amazingly beautiful. I love the melancholy of Arabic music.

i loved some of her stuff, didn't she have a UK chart hit in the 80s as well. her voice was special and from what i remember she united people on both sides of the divide with her music.

I have that CD as well, until some friends (pakistani) dissed me for being 'cheesy' apparently...go figure. So anyway, now I'm listening to qawwali dude Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan after i was showcased his stuff. Totally fantastic music, and I wish I could understand it all (the Sufiism poetry sung in Urdu). The album I have is Shahen-Shah which is very percussive, and the guy uses his amazing voice to the extreme...the album is very trance-like, not as in house/techno trance, but as in, the original, old school, instrumental, purposeful trance. You don't have to understand, just feel!

I know very little about this, but I' like almost everything I've heard.

Ofra was wonderful. Shame we lost her.

What do you mean 'we'? The woman was very much alone when she died, all by herself...nobody who cared!

Um... I'm not aware of the details of her death, but from the standpoint of collective lovers of music, "we" definitely suffered a loss at her demise.
