Love your new album. The single’s immediate, isn’t it?
It’s interesting because for me it was immediate, but there are two camps: those who get it and those who don’t. And hopefully those who don’t will get it eventually. I knew when we decided to do that as the first single it was kind of a brave move, but one I was really excited about, and I had the strength of my own convictions.

Does your best gay boyfriend William [Baker] have any say in the music side of things, or is it all clothes, hair and make-up?
If it was only hair and make-up he’d be getting off lightly! There’s so much more that we do together. We’re best friends, so if it’s not about work it’s about calling each other up when we’ve been together most of the day.

Do you think of the gay fans as some kind of touchstone? If it works for them it’ll work?
I haven’t looked at it that way. The gay fans are pop connoisseurs, I’ve always said that much. You’ve just always been there and hopefully always will be.

The new Brigitte Bardot look is very brave.

No-one can really touch B.B. But it’s something I’ve played with throughout. You only have to go back to ‘What Do I Have To Do’ when I was hardly out of my baby skin and was trying to be this fabulous woman.

Do you feel like a woman, capital W, ‘cause you still come over quite girlie?
More so than ever.

Do you feel more confident about getting your body out now you’re a woman?
I’m actually more concerned with covering it up.

Well, you wouldn’t. It’s fairly subtle. This may sound ridiculous, but ask anyone who’s been on photoshoots with me. If I put big heavy clothes on, I think I’m maybe too small, it really overtakes me. And they’re all trying to make the picture work and I always end up in something that’s a little... closer.

Yeah, well I still have to do that for the lingerie but we’ve moved away from flesh, not least because it’s everywhere you look these days. And I know I’m partly responsible for that.

So, are we not going to see your arse again?
Why do you want to see it anyway?

Are you a very happy lady at the moment, ‘cause you’re all loved up aren’t you?
Yes, things are cruising along. The difference for me, and probably the reason this album’s been so enjoyable to make, is that I did meet my boyfriend literally just before I started recording. And I’ve made the effort to make time to cancel or make gaps in the schedule, which up to now has been fairly impossible, but only impossible because I let it get that way. I’ve had a real change in my way of looking at things. It’s difficult when you love your work and there are so many enticing opportunities. I do feel happy. I’m in a great relationship and I’ve got an album that I think might be the best thing I’ve done.

Are you engaged?
No. Trust me, just about everything you read these days is not true. Which is pretty frightening, because it used to be just once in a while.

We should dispel all the rumours.
Darling, we’d be here all day. Anyway, usually it’s nobody’s business.

That’s a very saucy video you’ve got for ‘Slow’.
I know you lot will love it - there are lots of men in Speedos! There are some gorgeous girls in there, but I’m sure you’ll be noticing the others. We shot it in Barcelona with loads of Latino types. Basically, everyone was Latino except for me.

How do you keep your eye on the ball with all those men in trunks around?
I don’t know. I’ve got to be focused, obviously. I’ve got a lot to think about!

What does your man think of you rolling round with guys in Speedos?
Oh, he’s not focused on them.

So he doesn’t worry you’ve got a roving eye?
Oh, no, no, no...

You’re a good girl, aren’t you?
I am indeed.

There must be a lot of pressure being a national treasure. Do you not think if you were a bad girl it would be easier?
I just do what I do and sometimes I make mistakes with stuff. That’s part of growing up in public, and it can be difficult. But rather than focusing on it being a pressure, I’m just highly flattered by it.

Have you never felt the need to do something really shocking?
No. I probably did in the early 90s in my way. Of course, everything’s speeding up faster and faster and now when I look back on something like ‘Better The Devil You Know’, at the time they were really big steps for me. But now it’s like Blue Peter or something! I think I’ve always managed to stay on the right side, not just in the work that I do, but as a person. I really can’t stand having boundaries put around me – I won’t necessarily go over them, but I like to know that I can should I wish to.

You must be the richest woman in the world by now.
No! I think I must be in the wrong business. You see Hollywood actresses getting God knows how many millions for something. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy and I do well, but there are always comparisons. I’m definitely not the richest woman in the world.

Have you thought about going back into acting?
I have, and I go from feeling a deep desire to do it, because that's what I started out doing and having made some ridiculous choices... Thankfully, I think Willy wrote this in the book, people haven’t actually said, ‘She’s a terrible actress.’ They’ve just said, ‘God, she’s chosen some turkeys!’ So I think there isn’t so much a question of what I can do, although it hasn’t been proven yet, even to myself. If after this album and a tour, the most brilliant role came along with the most incredible director and it was my chance to really delve in and try to shine... I’d be terrified, of course I would! But the fear’s part of why you do it.

Do you speak French with Olivier?
I speak some. I’m not doing it now; you’ll make me embarrassed! I speak far more fluently when I’m really tired or jet-lagged or it’s the end of the day and I call him. It just comes out a lot easier, or of course a few glasses of wine can help. My pronunciation is great; I don’t have any problems with the accent.

You’ve got the lips, that’s why!
I’ve got the pout! He finds it very cute when I speak French.

So, have you and William ever got drunk together?
Not so much drunk, more tiddled. It’s really hard to get me out of the house most of the time because I’m always away, so the only place I can really feel safe and quiet is at home. But a while ago we met at the bar in Mirabelle’s; I had a pink, tailored suit on and I can’t remember what he was wearing, but we both looked like something from Miami Vice. This was our big night out: sitting at the bar in Mirabelle’s drinking Kir Royales. We were more like the Golden Girls than anything else. So that’s our catchphrase now: ‘We must go and do Golden Girls soon!’

Have you ever done that thing where girls get drunk and start snogging their gay boyfriends?
Oh no!
