My mom had always opposed my musical taste when growing up. She had major issues with Prince and Madonna in particular because she knew their image and the adult content of much of their work. But in 1992, she felt it went too far. She was aware of the SEX book. She was aware of Sexy MF. Since becoming a born again Christian, she stopped listening to most 'secular' music and her older sister had a big influence on her. I remember at my cousins' weddings, my Aunt Kathie would go up to the DJ and command, "Anything BUT rap, metal, Prince and Madonna." So this rubbed off my mom as well. I remember coming home from school one day to find my mom waiting in my room. She had a shoebox with all my Prince and Madonna cd's and any others with a parental advisory. She was like, "Nate, we gotta talk. I can't allow this in my house." She pulled out the newest Madonna cd, "Erotica?? This is bad news Nate? Why Is It So Hard? Deeper and Deeper? You can do better than that Nate." LOL. She totally picked out the wrong songs without even listening to them just based on the titles. Now if she had taken issue with "Thief of Hearts" or "Where Life Begins" I might understand. She demanded that I get rid of them immediately. At first she suggested I sell them and then was like, "No, I don't want these polluting another young mind either." Her solution was to burn them at which point I started screaming and crying at her. I yelled, "I'll just buy them again and hide them from you. This is MY music and you can't make me change. I'm fucking 16 years old. I can think for myself!" It was an emotional turning point. Years later, she's really lightened up and now Prince is her favorite artist! She just dances and laughs along with Sexy MF and Gett Off. It's nice that she's mellowed because my mom is naturally funny and foul mouthed. I think God wants her to be herself rather than a mirror of her older sister. Amen.  Thanks for sharing your story, Nate. My Dad onced grabbed my rented copy of Prince and the Revolution--Live and waved it as what was causing my 'attitude problem.' I felt like spitting back at him, "Hey fuckhead. Just because Anne Murray and Barry Manilow are as heavy as you get, don't drag me down into your private hell." STORY 1 I was working at a record store when this cd came out...so of course I played it everyday about 3 times a day. Anyway..This man who's shopping in the store walks up to me and says.. "Do you know what this is?" It's Madonna's new album. I told him. He then said, "No. I mean do you know what she's singing about?" So, I figured out what he was implying..so, I told him, I'd change it to something else.. "No. It's not that"... At this point I wasn't sure what he was getting at. He looked at the crucifix I was wearing and said.. "You're Catholic right?" 'Yes' I told him. Then what he said after that almost made me burst with laughter... "This is against God"..  Shock Horror.
So the girl I was working with interrupted and said..look we'll just change it. He then proceeded to tell her that she has to go with him. "No I don't" she replied. He told her that she was to be his wife. 
Then as if that wasn't enough this is what killed me...' He said that the Virgin Mary was sitting on a throne at the back of the store.  I told him..."No offense..but if the Virgin Mary was to come visit, I doubt she'd be hangin out here." I laughed so hard, I had to run into the back room until he left. 
ON THE FLIP SIDE OF THAT: Catholic Guilt I was turned around at the register, putting up a display while singing along to the "Erotica" cd..and we were all a bit crazy and laid back there...so I'm sure I wass doing a little hip giration as well. Then when I turned back around to help the lady that came up to the counter, I noticed she was with a friend. So after I said hello, I did a double take. Her friend was a priest :Priest: My face went from --->  to  in 1 second flat. He just smiled back. Of course they were buying the Gregorian Chant cd that was #1 on the charts at the time.

Actually yeah... :LOL: A few times. He was harrassing another employee a few weeks later. I had to ask him to leave. He said no. Then I told him..ok, I'll just call security. He said. "Ok. I leaving now." LOL He was quite a character. Bless him though. | |

Great thread! I absolutely love this album! Such a bold statement...great songs too!
I understand that this album will not appeal to everyone -- reading this thread, it appears that opinions are all over the map regarding Erotica. Outside of The Immaculate Collection, it is the only Madonna album I have on CD. I owned many of her older projects, either on vinyl or cassette, but never bothered to purchase CD versions of them. | |
