Agreed. Third, "Rap is NOT pop and if you call it that then STOP!" - Q-tip (A tribe called quest)
That was twelve years ago. Unfortunately, now it is pop music. Sadly, some of it is virtually minstrel music. Of course, artists like Talib Kweli, The Roots, Aceyalone, Common, Mos Def (if he is indeed still an MC) are keeping the purer form of hip-hop alive. It will head 2 the next popular Black music form...pop culture leans heavily on Black culture, period. Whatever form it takes. Luminous beings are we...not this crude matter.

Where ever it goes, hopefully it (black music) will go someplace it hasn't been before. That's part of the problem, we keep getting shit recycled. In the mid 70's nobody could see what prince had coming in the early 80's. In the early 80's nobody could see the "New Jack" style Teddy Riley would come with in the late 80's. It seems like after the mid 90's, new sounds just stopped coming so we went back and revisted older styles. To quote Prince "It's time for a new direction" Too bad even he hasn't tried to take us there lately. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

Agreed, whereas is the 80's at least keyboards, drum machines & samplers were used as creative tools in popular music nowdays the technology has diluted the music. Computers have their place in todays music production but the only way forward musically is with real instruments, which can express emotion, not like computers which remain 'cold'. I think it's heading towards Brighouse using the M62 but due to traffic, it's currently stuck near Bradford. We're expecting it at about four O'clock. "You know, you're the classic example of the inverse ratio between the size of the mouth and the size of the brain"

its headed right down the shitter along with everything else. theres no Funk in music anymore, everything has bullshit samples, terrible drum programming and Pharrell.
Music has no Soul as it once did, because of modern technology you cannot teach an akai mpc or a korg triton, to feel human emotion or the feel of a real musician playing notes on staff paper.all these so called producers do, is smoke blunts and read manuals on the latest looping tools.if half of them can read any damn way.sorry to go on a rant, but thats my feel on where music is going, in general. Notice the influx of disposable pop-rappers lately. Nelly, Murphy Lee, Ja-Rule, 50 Cent, Obie Trice, etc. The beats get lamer, the lyrics-whacker, and the video girls more scantily clad, it's sickening. I think black music is getting more recognition, but for the wrong reasons..Jazz, true hip-hop etc is overlooked, and eclipsed by generic RnB and pop-rap. So sadly I think that's where black music is heading. Thankfully we have the neo-soul saviours.

If you want to find the pulse of modern black music, go look in internet radio, or check out artists that ARE pushing the definition. Res, Skin, chicks like that are re-writing the styles. Missy and Outkast ARE constantly pushing the boundaries of what is accepted pop and black music.
Sly did the same thing, but nobody was listening back then, they only wanted another "Dance to the Music". When Prince was at his most experimental, (Dirty Mind, Controversy) wasn't nobody listening to him - they wanted another "I Wanna Be Your Lover" until he opened up the book on their ass. You folks are listening to the wrong stations and watching the wrong channels for the next wave. Go crank up that local access cable channel and listen to college radio. 5% of that shit will break through in 2 years and you'll be able to say "I heard it back when they were cool".
