what are your top albums of 2003?

mine go something like the following:

white stripes - elephant
stiffed - sex sells
cody chesnutt - headphone masterpiece
dizzee rascal - boy in da corner
the darkness - permission to land
Killer mike - monster
erykah badu - worldwide underground
donnie - the coloured section
king geedorah - take me to your leader
jaylib - champion sound
the strokes - room on fire

ill probably change my mind but those are just the ones that i can remember right now. i think ive listened more to old music than anything new this year.

Evolve-- Ani Difranco
The Love Below-- Andre 3000.

I'll stand by these two but I'm admittedly not listening to a lot of music these days. Yes I did buy other albums this year, just not anything from this year-- other than Erkah Badu's new one.

Quite Eclectic list u have there...
I think Cody's lp is too long-winded for its own good, but an excellent debut nonetheless, but he too like Prince needs a lesson in good production skills - I point us all to SOTT for inspriration of how it's done properly

My list is something like this, in no particular order:
1.David Bowie - Reality (I had to say this didn't I) wink
2.Outkast - Love Below/Speakerboxxx
3.Blur - Think Tank

Like you I've been listening to mostly old music, reissues and classics... but then it's the same every year, I find myself delving into the past to appreciate the present, I think it works quite well to do that... u learn to appreciate innovation by hearing past masters and vice-versa

No real order since year hasn't ended:

Tori Fixx - Black Out
Backroom Matches - Sota!
Les Nubians - One Step Forward
Meshell Ndegeocello - Comfort Woman
Various Artists - Phat Family 2003 Compilation: Down 4 The Swerve
Joan Armatrading - Lovers Speak
K'Alyn - The Beauty Of...
Kenna - New Sacred Cow
Kelis - Tasty

i agree about it being too long. i think the production is good though, its just really 'low-tech' - i suppose its not to everyone taste. whether he ever intended to record it in a studio i dont know but he did do it on a four track tape machine in his own bedroom! i just included it cos when its good, its fantastic.

My list is something like this, in no particular order:
1.David Bowie - Reality (I had to say this didn't I) wink
2.Outkast - Love Below/Speakerboxxx

i could put a 'w' instead of the 't' in the second word of blurs album title but i wont. i like reality more than blurs LP, easily. damon albarn generally sounds a bit weak to me whever he has to do ballads and i think cos think tank has so many slow (IMO dreary) songs, it ends up annoying me. i prefer the album on songs like crazy beat and the more uptempo ones.

by the way, i got some really good old albums lately like elvis' NBC special and his early 50s records - will have to burn it for you. got some johnny cash and kiss live and a few other cool things too. youll like them cos theyre well bloody old. ancient in fact wink

Moonbeam

1. Annie Lennox- Bare

Surprise, Surprise

2. Blondie- The Curse of Blondie

Fantastic new album that is vintage and groundbreaking at the same time.

3. Madonna- American Life

I don't care what anyone says, this album is perfect aside from the title track.

4. Dannii Minogue- Neon Nights

A LOT of fun on this album! Great, catchy and tripped out retro jams make it a great summer album.

5. David Bowie- Reality

A wonderful album- classy at times and roaring at others. Another winner!

6. Prince- NEWS

I like this album a lot. It's got a lot going on and isn't the borefest that "Xpectation" was for me.

7. Andre300- The Love Below

It wasn't as wondrous as I was expecting. Perhaps I read into the hype too much. Perhaps I need to give it another listen.

To come:

Kylie Minogue- Body Language

Based on descriptions and the songs I've heard, this album will be fantastic! Probably a top 3 album of 2003.

The Strokes- Room on Fire
I know I'll adore this one!

Too early to tell:

Big Boi- Speakerboxxx

I like the tracks I've heard quite a bit, especially "Bowtie" and "The Way You Move."

Wishlist:

White Stripes- Elephant

I ADORE "Seven Nation Army," but I haven't had the gumption to pick this up yet.

Neptunes Presents...Clones

I adore Busta's "Light Your Ass on Fire" and I like Pharell's "Frontin'" as well. Is the whole album worth the buy?

Disappointments:

Prince- Xpectation

yawn

I think the newness of "Reality" has worn off and I like "Neon Nights" better at this point. It's still early, though.

Yeah, the newness of it was great. I still love "Reality"- don't get me wrong. I read Liz's review on AMG today and they were so harsh!

1. Andre 3000- The Love Below (but not Speakerboxxx)
2. Elvis Costello- North
3. Steely Dan- Everything Must Go
4. R Kelly- Chocolate Factory
5. Mya- Moodring (I don't care what anyone says, this is a wonderful pop album)
6. Prince- Xpectation
7.Sting- Sacred Love
8.Sugar Ray- In the Pursuit of Leisure
9.Fleetwood Mac- Say You Will
10.Meshell Ndegeocello- Comfort Woman

Honorable mentions go to: Barenaked Ladies "Everything to Everyone" and Smash Mouth "Get the Picture". These are two albums that most would consider guilty pleasures, but I can't help it- they're so darn catchy!

She deserves it. I agree that it's at best 3 1/2 stars. She's capable of so much better.

She's acting out like a spoiled child and presenting a fake image/sound. She used to be so genuine and heartfelt.

OOh .. Im glad someone said "Beth Hart Leave the Light On". Its great. She came to our radio staion and performed 7 songs in our boardroom and blew us all away. Her voice is (to quote Madonna) the bomb diggity.

Anyway, my faves ..

David Bowie - Reality
Beth Hart - Leave the light On
Thicke - A beautiful World

I think those are the only 'new' CDs Ive purchased all year.

Other than that , best finds for me this year

Queen - Innuendo & A Night at the Opera
Silverchair - Diorama

Treacly crap award goes to Michael Jackson for that god awful 'One More Chance' . And Im a fan. Blearch . Whats next , an album of banjo songs with a preschool backing choir. Yes, that sounds about right.

I didn't include TTD's "Wildcard" or Thicke's album only because I thought those actually came out in 2002, but those were really great too. I'm glad Thicke's getting some recognition here, because his album was a fantastic debut.

She used to sing on the early Tricky albums and this is her
much awaited solo debut. It's quite a varied album with a
lot of very beautiful songs on it. Her vocals, as always,
are breathtaking. Very beautiful records.
