Her music is taking a worrying turn.
Really hope that her jazz album (to be released early next year) will bring her music towards newer grounds, cuz she seems to be stuck into depressing pointless funk/ambient music at the moment...

I take it you're talking about the first track? Heard the album a few days ago. Only a couple of great tracks on that album, but that first one, whatever it's called, frigging kicks ass. Great funk. Basement Jaxx? What the hell that is? Never heard of it, and I know everything about everything. Are you joking? I'm saying, I didn't hear ANY jams on it ... nothing NEAR the funk of "Boyfriend" or Leviticus or God,Fear&Money (my three favorite Me'Shell songs). This record is great for chillin on a Sunday afternoon, but WHERE is the FUNK this woman is so capable of throwing down? Why do you think she's slid into the quiet storm stuff? Love Song #1 makes the LP worth it all to me. But overall it's solid. It's not unexpected that she didn't turn out a brilliant record. From what I've read, Maverick is about to dump her because she isn't selling. Think about that. A record label named "Maverick" headed by a manufactured maverick is dumping an maverick artist because she can't sell to a mass audience. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Well to be fair, only a label called "Idiot" would continue to back an artist that didn't sell. But, a lot of that is in budgeting. If they KNOW she's a slow burn, then don't sink a mint into overexposing her.
She'll continue to do well, but Maverick has some big sellers on their roster now, so I'm sure their position as a big Indie label is lost. In my opinion, Me'Shell is in the same category as Ani DiFranco, Soullive, etc... will ALWAYS be an underground star, who might rise to the surface occasionally, but mainstream just ain't hearing anything from an artist that's over 25. Agreed. I just find it ironic. Now that she's got an underground fan base, her fans will follow her. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Firstly, Bashir is not really an alter ego. It's the name she took on when she started studying the Islamic faith. Whether she is truly converted or not, I don't know, but it ain't no Prince name change for purely contractual reasons.
Secondly, Comfort Woman is as depressing as Bitter? In what way, pray tell? Although I wouldn't rank CW up there in her top 2 (it's too early for me to tell), its leap frogged Bitter for me - which is an album I have to be in the right mind frame/mood to listen to. Thirdly, why is the reggae element pointless? Lastly, Meshell is VERY much in the same category as Ani DiFranco - in more ways than you might realize. But if DiFranco will forever be underground it's not for the same reasons that Meshell might be. DiFranco doesn't want to work within the major label system, she will never be provided the gargantuan monetary resources to have her music flourish in the overground. Meshell wanted to be backed by a "small" label, but so far she's never purported to be interested in being on an indie label. This post not for the wimp contingent. I'm just saying it's got the same, low-key vibe as Bitter. Lyrically, I got no clue. I don't pay a lot of attention to lyrics. (don't HIT me)... but in the slow pensive mood of the music. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

The Bitter comparison isn't what I was referring to with anything you posted, it was DrD. I responded to about 3 or 4 different posts without quoting, so maybe I shouldn't have done that. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Some of her music has taken me several listens to appreciate the beauty of it. Perhaps "Comfort Woman" requires several spins before it can easily be classified. I'm not a huge fan of it, but I can hear some of the beauty in it (the first three tracks are all sublime). I do like it- just not on the level of my love for "Bitter" or "Peace Beyond Passion".
