Brenda Russell, Anyone? I was floored when that sista came 2 my high-school in Harlem back in 2000/1999. She was doing mad crazy thangs 2 the piano, she played cheerful version of Duke Ellington's piano piece "Lots O' Fingers".
It was a music class and she was lecturing us about how to deliever rich chords with the piano and simply how to play ON POINT without trying too hard, not to mention the poems that she shared with us at the end of the class. On the way home, I bought 3 LPs from her "Brenda Russell"(97), "Soul Talking"(93-since she wrote the self-title song 4 Chaka in her 88's LP "C.K") and the greatest hits(92). I was so impressed, I had to go to our music teacher and ask her 4 the video tape they recorded 4 Brenda's lecure. I also came by one of her jazz gigs over here in Harlem last year and the woman was smockin' that piano & fender rhodes to death. I personaly admire her mo' as a musician mo' than a vocalist. She's so underrated! Any fans? | |
