Have you ever met a celebrity face-to-face and it mucked up your perception of them?

I know everybody in here is into music and goes to concerts regularly. Have you ever met a celebrity or musician that you really admire face-to-face and you adore their music/books/art/(insert whatever here) and everything, but once you meet them they had a very nasty vibe and were kinda uncool to you in person?

I experienced this when I met one of my favorite singers in person after a concert. I love this singer's music, videos and everything, but in person they were kind of shady...I still enjoy their music, but I don't know if I can really be that "fan" that I once was. Has that ever happened to you?

...and no, it wasn't Janet. lol

Nah, I've had pretty good luck in my brushes with greatness. Once when I worked in a video store in NYC, Brad Pitt came in with his assistant and acted a fool, but in that whole weird "don't look at me/don't talk to me" kind of way. Whatev.

I met Stevie Ray Vaughan and spent about 30 minutes backstage after a show with him in his dressing room. Him and his wife Lenny. He autographed my guitar.

He was awesome, and I was pretty much bowing down screaming "I'm not worthy, you are a God, you are awesome", but he was lit like a flare and reeked of hard liquor. He was really really nice, but it was like talking to that drunk aunt of yours - the one that kind of stammers and repeats herself over and over and you nod, hoping they're understanding what you're saying...

So, I was bummed. Meeting him was unexpected (I left my guitar with the backstage doorman, expecting/hoping SRV would sign it and just return it), it was when he was doing blow and crown cocktails.

Don't get me wrong. The THINGS he said were inspiring:
ME: "You are a God. I tell all my friends to buy your records because you have changed my life".
SRV: "I'm not in it for the money man. I love what I do, but I don't care if I don't sell a single record".

But is WAS a let down to know that he was sooo wasted.

edit:
Lane Staley from Alice in Chains - sort of the same scenario - he wandered into my office at the nightclub and we got to talking, I was making with the cool guy talk, and in the middle of my "I know you guys are true musicians, not just in it to be like Pearl Jam" he asked me if I knew where he could get some dope.

I paused, and said, "uh, no man, I don't smoke weed in the office" and he said "no, DOPE", pointing to the pretty tracks in his arm.

NICE.

Edit 2:

I have meet many, many entertainment people.
In the Prince related artists camp, Susannah Melvoin, Mr. Hayes and John Blackwell, Jerome Benton, and Monte Moir were the coolest. Prince was the strangest.

Other notably cool artists were Seal and Sade.

I met Moby once, and it did muck up my perception of him and celebrities in general - not that he was an asshole or anything. It's just it was my first encounter with a famous person, and I found it disturbing that I knew so much about him and he knew nothing about me. I was just another guy in the line, getting my copy of "18" signed. He drew a cartoon of the little guy from "We Are All Made of Stars", made some muffled joke at which I chuckled politely, and I shuffled on.

I know someone who met Justin Timberlake and he wouldn't even give an autograph, completely ignored everyone around him who wasn't part of his "entourage". Needless to say the handful of "fans" who were waiting to meet him after the concert started yelling abuse afterwards lol

Me and my wife met and chatted briefly to Al Pacino in a Hoolaghans steakhouse in NYC when we were on holiday there a few years ago. He was all in black, wore white socks!!, had stains on his trousers and greasy hair and guess what , he was as cool as hell. I got a photo with him [yeah i know but it was AL!] .

Damn you busted me. I'm death. How do you do?

A funny thing about Lane Staley - after he died, the bass player released a statement saying that the band was TOTALLY a corporate assemblage to cash in on the Soundgarden/Pearl Jam success... to which, a friend of mine replied, "The band may have been faked, but the addictions were genuine".

I imagine the same could be said about Stone Temple Pilots.

smile Yes, there have been a few who did surprised me at the time with their attitude and/or their behavior...however, some of those same few have been quite pleasant to be around on other occassions. So, sometimes it difficult to tell whether or not it's "celebrity attitude" acting out or simply a "moody" (whom perhaps has a un-friendly disposition by nature) celebrity...or other...

One "meeting" that comes to mind was with the actor who plays Isaac Sharon in 'Under The Cherry Moon'. He's nice... rose I was with some friends ordering food and he was waiting to order food as well. And, I kind of turned and saw him just as he looked at me and we both smiled smile Then, I recognised him (lol) and I blinked and my smile got brighter biggrin... biggrin

No one else in the place seemed to recognise him...(or act like a geek)...but at that moment I think he knew I knew him from somewhere in his work... smile He looked away... smile

I sat with my friends to eat, and when this man---(I should look up his name)---got his food, he sat down at a table in the corner with his back to the room... rose

redface

So, yeah, I suppose it did change my perception of him, because the characters I've seen him portray in movies have been aggressive hell raisers...heh... smile

I met Michael McDonald. Very nice guy.

"Met" P one night at the old Glam Slam. I went nuts at first, because he's a "hero" of mine, but calmed down. He was aiight.

I met Steve Winwood once, very cool dude.

I met Bart Starr, Payton Manning, Darrell Green on separate occasions.

There are some more I've met in kind of passing.

Wow, you guys have some really cool, ecclectic experiences!

I met Meshell after a show at the Roxy in L.A. and she was veryyy mellow. Very, very, very, very mellow.

I met Kelis and...ok, I'm a "fan" of her music, but after meeting her I got a weird vibe. It was after a N*E*R*D show at the House of Blues in Hollywood and N*E*R*D and Kelis did a record signing. Pharrell gave me the obligatory thanks and signed my little album cover or whatever and was busy talking on his cell phone. I got a "anyhoo" vibe from him.

Kelis: I professed my love for her music to her but she had this kind of distant, blank look on her face. I felt that when she hugged me it was forced and that she really wasn't feeling me. After that experience, I still listen to her music, but I don't really say I'm a "fan" or go out of my way to promote it like I once did. I would go to her concert if she ever had one, but I would never *want* to meet her again.

I dont know if u know him, but my dad's nephew is MC Shan. (The Bridge) / (Snow: Informer). I remember meeting him when he shook me and my brother's hand and gave us some money when we were little.

He gave us an autographed copy of his single "Jane Stop That Crazy Thing!" (Cold Chillin' Records). Written on it was all of our names and his. Somebody stole it after someone burglarized our house in Staten Island though.

I did talk 2 him alot, last year his daughter died of cancer i think, he wanted me 2 come out there and spend sum time in Long Island, but I think he moved from New York now. He hates it.

Yeah, a lot of people say that the Star Trak camp is really cool to hang around and approachable and then sometimes people are like "damn, they did me dirty." But I guess it depends on how they feel after a gig, so I won't hold it against Pharrell and Kelis. But, it did make me take a look at myself and tone down my fanaticism. The only person I'll ever truly go crazy for is Janet. I'm not gonna play myself again in front of some "celeb" being some groupie.

Met the whole band Jamiroquai in a McDonalds restaurant in Germany in 1995 (yes, I thought they were vegetarians, too). They were not very well known in germany back then so they could sit there unnoticed. I sat down at the table next to them and we began a conversation. They were happy that somebody recognized them and invited me to come backstage in the evening after their concert (I already had a ticket for it) and I gave them my name. My name really was on the guestlist in the evening and I went backstage. I got autographs and it was cool. Only Jay was annoyed the whole evening and dind´t talk to nobody.

Madonna I met this year in may while she was at a german TV show. I went to the rehearsals (I work for the TV channel) in the afternoon and Madonna asked me and some others to sit down at her feet so she could get a feeling for the audience in the evening. She danced with us while performing. It was cool!

I remember Ray Parker Jr. came into this clothing store I used to work at in the Village. He was wearing a "Ghostbusters" pin (he wrote the theme, just in case you forgot). Something about him wearing that pin though... To me it said, "Hey, I'm Ray Parker Jr. the guy who wrote the theme to Ghostbusters!" It was like branding. Maybe making the association wasn't his intention at all. But, I can be such a cynic sometimes. I might have asked for his autograph, but the pin thing turned me off.

Diana Ross came in but I looked the other way. I couldn't help think she wanted to be noticed. She came up to the mezzanine where there was a fitting room (I was on duty there). The fitting room was unisex, I KNEW she wasn't going in there!

I did meet Phyllis Hyman at the store once. She was cool. We chatted about our shoe size. smile
