...(sure i could call tha' cable company, an get it "cut off")...but my opinion an complaint is, MTV should of stayed in its original format rather than putting on these stupid shows about sorority groups, spring break, trl, and the real world bla bla'...I LOVE MUSIC!!! i know you do too!
(even videos at times) i totally understand MTV's intentions commercially, i realize "this" is all by design,
(one package rolling into another) an it seems "they" realized it too but now even MTV2 is getting a few of these shows instead of showin' videos...i stopped watching them along time ago, now i mostly read about NEW stuff or go websites that introduce me to REAL music...am i the only one who "feels this way???" whats yer opinion???

Umm...do you have digital cable? If so then you should check out MTV Hits, which plays current videos non-stop. MTV Jams (I think that's what it's called), which plays hip-hop and r&b, VH1 Soul (which also plays R&B with some hip-hop), and last but not least VH1 CLASSIC..it's the SHIT!

Of course, there is also M2, MTV's sister station, but it is starting to have non-video programming on it too. All those other stations I mentioned play nothing but videos (altho, VH1 Classic does do artist profiles once and awhile with intervews and stuff, but that's not so bad )

hi silver this is retrodude aka jeff biggs. theres a new digital cable channel in canada called muchretro its has all 80s videos on it i havent called my cable company yet to see if i can get the channel but i know its on satellite tv chat soon your right mtv canada format sucks i dont know about the states lol

Here in Sweden we have the nordic MTV,
witch is as exiting as the flu.
IT´s really dead so I gave that up long ago.
Hopefully things will change in time,
but right now it´s as boring as the swedish
radio I´m afraid.

I personally believe the debilitating and regurgatory effects EminemTV has had on 'pop' culture over the past decade would make an able bodied person envious of the blind and deaf.
The gratuitious marketing of personality and sex which now personalises the MTV playlist undoubtedly cheapens a true musician's artform, where songs have been sidelined to the status of background accompiment to a multi-million dollar video - the budget of which usually far exceeds the sum which paid for the artist's entire album to be recorded (and could also undoubedly fund a small hospital wing.)
The cancerous minions working for The Man have modified the genes of this relatively new youth phemonomon - 'rock n' roll' - to the point where current popular music cynically reflects unexistant 'trends' which have been artificially created and aggresively marketed to nieve teen audiences through the ravenous mass media, which revels in easily marketable 'movements' and so-called pesonalities - which has now morphed inexorably into the ludicrous cult of celebrity.
Sitting back and letting this happen is just another sign of our lazy, over fed and over stimulated 21st century mindsets becoming desensitised and passive to anything with real artistic merit.
This rise of 'hip-hop' and 'rap' (marketing man labels which mean absolutely nothing) also massages the notion that MTV have become the new 'minsrel show', where African American males preach mysogony and violence in front of their eager condecending white audience, cheapening and pimping their cultural identity in the name of entertainment.
I could rival War and Peace with the size of this post, but generally I believe people should attempt to question just exactly what they are buying and why they are being sold it.

MTV has become more of a lifestyle channel for teens with disposable income than it is a tool for the music industry (which, don't be fooled, they have their fingers in the disposable lifestyle programming pie as well, natch). It's the same with Rolling Stone - they go for the easy money these days, which unfortunately has more to do with the Olsen Twins than rock 'n' roll.

MTV hasn't been principally about the music in a LONG time. I long for the days when I would stay up past my bedtime and watch videos against my Mom's "better judgment" in the late 80s and early 90s. It was an exciting time for me to get into music, and largely due to the fact that they PLAYED music videos. Don't get me wrong- I love the Real World (although the most recent casts have left a lot to be desired). But Music Television has placed music on the backburner for pseudo-celebrities and "coolness" points. Heck, TRL doesn't even play the entire videos anyway! Is that show 2 hours long now? They can't even play 10 full videos in 2 hours.

I agree silver MTV is so lame now - I mean I was cool with the Real World back when the people on the show had a purpose - rememb er that? they were aspiring musicians, writers, and artist - now they just get picked based on commercial selling points looks and attitude alone!

I don't think I've ever really been a big fan of MTV, even in my youth I found it hard to watch. When I think back on it all I have are images of "Bon Jovi" "Cher" "Dire Straits" and "Bruce Springsteen". It was rare for me to catch a video that I was interested in. Actually, I think MTV is a conspiracy to dumb down America, a plot to keep the youth superficial and decadent. I remember reading somewhere that most of the money that funds MTV has it's orgins in the middle east, who'd a thought they would need extra cash? Since, they run about 42 mins of commercials each hour.

I agree with the views on this thread.MTV has become a joke and I rarely watch it anymore.In the 80s,MTV was all about THE MUSIC.They showed nothing but music videos around the clock.They even used to show entire concerts from your favorite artists and bands (in 1982,I recall staying up late one night to see a Cheap Trick live show).Damn,I miss those days! Nowadays,MTV is more interested in stupid reality shows and other NON-musical programming.For the most part,if I'm in the mood to watch music videos,I'd rather watch VH-1.

MTV will forever, in my mind, be judged by the standard it set back in '81. Back then you could turn on MTV and be entertained for hours with nothing but videos. Concerts on the weekend. Of course the dearth of music videos ensured that practically anyone could be shown on the channel (oops, save for black artists until much later).

Today, it's a shell of it's former self. And I suppose they are to blame for this current cancer called 'reality TV'.

Yeah, MTV. I've got lots of great stuff on tape from back when they did the Rockumentaries and other specials about music.
