They call it "Neo Soul" because "Soul" unfortunately conjures up artists like Smokey, Stevie Wonder, "old school" artists that are churning out "quiet storm" snoozer babymaking music.

The new artists that are coming out (in my opinion) didn't want to be categorized as the same style, because, no offense to Issac Hayes or Aretha, but that style of music is just cheesy, whereas Donnie or India or Jill are indeed pumping something fresh into the genre... therefore, the style needed a name to distance itself from "OLD SCHOOL SOUL".

So, hate the name, it don't matter. When you say Neo Soul, you KNOW you're not saying "the new record by the Manhattans".

i dont understand the hate for this term...

I would guess the scorn stems from the liberal use of the term which seems to apply to any black artist who plays their instruments or writes their own music.

I just happen to be one who dislikes labels in general.
