DOLLY PARTON tribute-'Just Because I'm a Woman' I just purchased this yesterday and it has not left my player yet! As a fan of Dolly's since I was a child (my dad owns Dolly 8-tracks!) I feel it's about damn time Dolly started getting some props! The last few years have been great to Dolly as she has released some her best music ever on the indie label Sugar Hill.
This tribute comes at a great time and there are some great interpretations of Dolly's songs sung by some amazing talent! ALISON KRAUSS-'9 to 5': A great bluegrass reworking of Dolly's first major hit of the 80's. MELISSA ETHERIDGE-'I Will Always Love You': Though I love Melissa, I did'nt think this would suit her as well vocally...but it works and she sounds more tender than she's ever sounded before! NORAH JONES-'The Grass Is Blue': Amazing! Would not sound out of place on Norah's own album. The song is originally a bluegrass tune and Norah gives it a totally different mood and flavor! JOAN OSBORNE-'Do I Ever Cross Your Mind': One of my favorite vocalists Joan turns in a beautiful version of this classic ballad. The Joan Osborne of late has been a belter of soul classics, here she gives a delicate, breezy performance. SHELBY LYNNE-'The Seeker': Great...accoustic funky reworking of another Dolly classic. MINDY SMITH-'Jolene': A young unknown but with a great voice. This one is still growing on me...I think Paula Cole should have been here doing this song...it's a crowd favorite at her live shows! She breaks the song down by beat-boxing! EMMYLOU HARRIS-'To Daddy': My favorite! This is actually the original 1977 version Emmy did for her album 'Quarter Moon In A Ten Cent Town'...she asked Dolly to record it before Dolly even got the chance to record it herself! SHANIA TWAIN/ALLISON KRAUSS/DOLLY-'Coat Of Many Colors': Though I'm not much of a Shania fan..this song can bring me to tears no matter who sings it. Alison and Dolly harmonize. KASEY CHAMBERS-'Little Sparrow': Aussie folky does her thing on this recent bluegrass number. Very haunting feel to it. SINEAD O CONNOR-'Dagger Through The Heart': AMAZING..AMAZING...AMAZING! Sinead sings it so angrily and so good...I've repeated this one more than a few times already...I'd hate to be the one to scorn Sinead! ALLSION MOORER-'Light of a Clear Blur Morning': Shelby Lynn's sister turns in a light, accoustic version of this Dolly classic rocker. ME'SHELL N'DEGEOCELLO-'Two Doors Down': Funky as hell and stunning at the same time. Me'Shell makes this country song her own! DOLLY PARTON-'Just Because I'm A Woman': Dolly reworks her own classic song that once had her banned from country radio because of it's telling of the secrets women at the time usually took to the grave! I love this record...I encourage all of you to check it out! Every minute of last night is on my face today....

I don't have anything by Dolly, but make no mistake: she's a FABULOUS songwriter. It's a shame her breasts overshadow everything. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
