Ain't No Sunshine...

Who's version of that AWESOME song do you prefer; the soulful rendition that Bill Withers made famous, or the rock-laced version by Lenny Kravitz???

I like the original myself.

I played the GROOVES off that album. I used to prop the cover up at the end of my bed so the last thing I could see at night was CUTE ASS MJ in that apple hat with that BEE-YOU-TEE-FULL 'fro fro. I was in the fourth grade when it came out and totally in love love2--I'ma have to dig it out and take a listen.

Definitely the MJ version. Not just cos I'm a fan. I must have heard every version of this song, but MJ is the only one who does something interesting with the "no no no no no" part! Talk about SOUL! And he was THIRTEEN and did it the same year as the original. Totally blows me away and it's probably my fav of his solo Motown stuff.

The versions by Lyn Collins and Isaac Hayes (live in Wattstax) get under my skin the most.

Btw, its Isaac who delivers the most "I know I know"s..

Yes, it's just amazing. Where did he get all that from back then?

Soul for Real does an excellent acapella version. It's my favourite next to the original. It's too short though. But great none the less. Definitely check it out! wink

Bill Withers all the way baby!!! It's short, sweet, and to the point. It gets to me everytime, not in a weepy sort of way, but the passion of missing somebody. I like the instrumental version by Boney James, which is much longer than the original. Never heard the MJ version, or don't remember. Definitely haven't heard Lenny's version.

Oh yes...

Isaac Hayes 17 minute masterpiece...
Lyn Collins is the most soulful one in my opinion...

I am afraid that he is right.
I love Bill Withers, he put some great music out there. Songs like "Harlem","Who is he and what is he to you" and "Aint no sunshine". I love his naturalness and easy. The brotha got lots of soul.

But there is no way that he`s up there with Bobby Bland. And Isaac Hayes`s and Lyn Collins` version of "Sunshine" beat Bills by far.

Its okay that you have your own opinion. But dont downplay the other versions unless you have heard them.
