Since I show appreciation for people who actually master their instruments and voices... I mean REALLY master them... I was never interested too much in Heavy Metal.

And please chemmie... please dont claim now that any heavy metal "musician" masters his instrument like a John Coltrane, Curtis Mayfield or the members of Mandrill...

I think there are artists in ANY given genre who could be argued to have a mastery over their instruments, voices and talents.

Curtis could have picked up his guitar and played any heavy metal tune you asked him for.
But which heavy metal "musician" could master a soul or jazz tune?

Anxiety, you really cant mean what you have said above.

Have you ever heard The Great Kat? lol

I think you're pushing your subjective peg into an objective hole. It's not gonna fit.

I absolutely mean what I said above, and I think it takes a certain experience and passion to master a given form of music with any semblance of sincerity or true virtuosity. I bet Curtis Mayfield couldn't have touched the kind of guitar work that Thurston Moore does (granted Thurston isn't a metal guitarist, but he's an amazing hard rock musician all the same, and one of my faves), but not only would I not have WANTED him to, but I'd also venture to say Thurston couldn't touch the style that Curtis rocked - at best, it would sound like a pale impersonation.

You have to take into account the background and experience that makes a musician decide that they're going to play primarily in a certain style, and respect them on that level. I wouldn't dare to compare someone like Lemmy with someone like Coltrane. Apples and oranges. Maybe on some really introspective levels I could cite similarities in their work, but it might not make sense to anyone but myself. One's good at one style, the other is brilliant at another.

And similarly, there are crap musicians in any field as well, and they shouldn't serve as examples for an entire genre. I won't mention Kenny G. if you won't mention Winger.

Kenny G is not a jazz musician. He's a pop musician. Just like Moore is not heavy metal (as you have already pointed out), he's hard rock.
Now I dont dig hard rock either, but I do recognize some amazing and very skilled playing there.
Heavy metal?
No.

Kenny G. isn't jazz to YOU. He's not jazz to me either, but he gets lumped into the genre enough that he's all too often served up as an example of why jazz-haters hate jazz.

So maybe my question to you should be, what do you consider heavy metal?

damn Im sorry I missed this. I can live with your ignorance in the P&R forum lol but this is going over the line!
How dare you come into the "show love for heavy metal" thread and say they are incapable of mastering their instruments. As a fan of many many many different genres of music, i can attest that many of them can master their instruments with the best of them.

take Dave Lombardo for instance. Drumming mastermind.
Mike Patton. Greatest lyricist in the world. yes, beyond Prince.
too many guitarists to mention but Dimebag Darrel of Pantera is a good start. see the band Clutch for much much much more.
basists. Metal basists are almost unbeatable.

im not going to go and trash Coltrane or Albert King or anyone but to claim they do not master their instrument is rediculous. they just master it in a different style.

but hey, we cant all have such eclectic taste. lol

Ooops... gotcha! The fact that you have just said yourself that Jazz is eclectic must mean that Heavy Metal is not, right?

No Dave Lombardo could play a Wes Motgomery solo. End of the story.

By the way, I took guitar lessons from Joe Pass... he was the GREATEST jazz guitarist EVER, but he could not have played Superjoint Ritual's music because he NEVER played that style.

Someone once mentioned the GREAT Tony Williams trying to sit in on a rock session and how bad he sucked when he tried to rock.

There is absolutely NO way that Curtis Mayfield could ever have played a Slayer song... it is just not his deal.

There are many examples of this, so the statements that Soulpower has made are simply made out of ignorance.

"sit," not "set" edit... goddamn it.
