Whoopie--Why Is She So Hated?

I heard someone from Kiss FM pokes fun of Whoopie, I don't remember the whole thang but at the end he said "Guess ol' girlfriend wanna be black again" and I was thinking "What the hell is he talking about?" becoz I didn' hear this 4 the 1st time. I heard/read many resenful comments against the woman(asp from black people).

And I also noticed that her presence in black media is nearly "never", matta o' fact she recieves alot of backlash from black media.

Am I missing something here? Why is the woman so hated?

I think she caught a lot of flak for dating Ted Danson.

I don't think this the reason, many sistas dated outside there race such as Chaka Khan who've been with alot of white men.

I heard her once said that she never uses the term African American cus she's not actualy an African American.

Could this be the reason?

She received flack not merely for dating Ted Danson (who was still married at the time to a woman recently paralyzed after having his child), but thinking it was funny when he appeared at a 1993 Friar's Club roast in her honor in blackface. People were shocked and offended, and she had no idea why.

Also, she has alienated some black people by criticizing black political voice (as with Jesse Jackson's 1997 criticism of the nominees for the Academy Awards, which she hosted that year) yet turning around to make the self-same critiques. (Onstage, after dissing him, she made several of the same statements Jackson had made.) Also, much was made over her 1998 claim in her autobiography, "Book," that she is not "African American," but merely "American."

These instances, along with her string of relationships exclusively (seemingly so, anyway) with white men, have led many people to wonder if Whoopi, in fact, has a problem with her blackness... above being able to pimp its aesthetic in Hollywood.

Whoopi is a self-thinking woman. Hollywood, and some black people (by the way, I'm black), have a hard time accepting (black) women who are not so much about the way things 'look,' but are more about the truth obtained by intelligence.

I admire the woman. She inspires me to be FULLY human.

I neva heard about this. This very ugly!

However, I'm fimiliar with the Jesse Jackson saga and how much of a backlash she recieved from that. Then again, some of the gangsta rap had their shares of "war words" against Jesse back in the day and not to mention the "Maaan, funk Jesse Jackson" comment from the barbershop.

Far as her denial blackness? I heard her once refer 2 herself as a black woman, she's just against the "African American Woman" title tho.

I couldn't care less about Whoopi's political views either way. She's an actress -- a fairly status quo one -- and I leave it at that.

I love her so much it ain't even funny! She's just real as a pinch in yo ass, she doesn't act as if she's so fucking untochable, ya know? A perfect example of a New Yorker, I love her down-2-earth personality and most importantly, I loved how she broke boundaries and didn't allow anybody to limit her talent and make her do typical shit just becoz she's a black woman.

Umm..does she sing? I know that in her show she is supposed to be a one hit wonder from the eighties (a joke which works the first time you hear it,,,but then).

I've never understood it but I've heard some people rage on her appearance, which is just bullshit. No, she isn't the most beautiful woman but why should that have any reflection on her as a comic and actress. Personally, I think Whoopi is cool. I dig some of her movies and stuff (I liked the loved the first episode of "Whoppi" but I'm getting sick of it already) but she has made some clunkers (Anyone heard of "T. Rex", the movie that probably killed her career in movies?).

Whoppi's cool with me. Everything stated by my fellow
orgers is basically true. But i can't hate her for stating her views. Its her RIGHT,right?

dating white guys doesn't mean Shit to me. that's her prerogative. Chaka's been with mostly white guys but nobody in their right mind would call her an "tom" (that's an OLD
term,haha) or a sell-out.

whoppi's BLACk. that's how i see her.

most of her movies aren't good...but i like her trying different things.

sister act was GREAT.

and she sings alright. (for real)

now if most blacks hate her that's THEIR right too.

What did I say?

Yeah, that Ted Danson in black face thing didn't sit too well with folks. I remember hearing that Montell Williams walked out of the roast. They didn't stay together long after that.

I often wonder why I don't like her as a performer (I do not know anything
about her personal life).
I don't like her brand of humor.
I don't like the sound of her voice and I am not fond of her looks.
I probably don't understand her gift as I don't watch her performances at all.

Very few people affect me the way she does.
Nothing personal...just whoopi, the performer.
I do admire her courage.
So...how's everybody doing? smile

I think within the walls of the Friar's Roast, the Ted-in-blackface thing was completely acceptable. For anyone familiar with these events, it's a no-holds-barred attack on the guest of honor, and nothing is sacred. The "honor" of these events is that there's enough of a comfort level among everyone that they can not only dish out the insults and blue humor, but be a good enough sport to take the slings and arrows.

The press took it out of context and sensationalized it, and Montel has certainly paraded out far more offensive guests on his talk show.

Whoopi's fine - she has crappy taste in projects now that she's rich and famous, but I don't think she's the source of all evil.

Blacks have a problem with Whoopi for some odd reason:

1)They screamed when she got colored contacts disbelief

2)They squealed when she dated Ted Danson and worse when she dated Frank Langella confuse

3)Were pissed when she said she was NOT African American, she was Black. She was not born in Africa and had never been to Africa.

So much hate in the world over silly sh!t. Let her do her thing, and you do your thing, and cut it.

I read her book entitled "Book" in which she talks about the issue of race and ethnicity in her personal life. She refers to herself as "American" and not African-American because she feels that she has no immediate ties to Africa. Her whole history has been American (from the enslavement of her ancestors to the present). She says that whites don't go around calling themselves European-American, they call themselves American first and white second. It is Whoopi's way of claiming the identity of the black people who literally helped build and shape this country. In some respects she is right because blacks fought alongside whites in the Revolutionary War and almost every U.S. war on record, but when we think of a true American we imagine a white-skinned, light-eyed anglo. She's basically constituting her identity.

What he said.

Plus, people have criticized many of her roles as being "mammy" roles.

I completely agree with you. I love Whoopi and I think she is an amazing talent. She tells it like it is and sometimes people don't like hearing the truth. I've been a fan of Whoopi's for years and years. She is indeed a self-thinking woman and it's too bad there are not more like her.

Around the world ... in 80 ... muhfuggin days... That was classic.

I give her props as an actress, though.

I heard many great stuff about her pre-color purple broadway shows.

I also heard that Bette Davis(her idol) hated her ass till she saw one of her broadway shows.
