I am afraid that he is right.
I love Bill Withers, he put some great music out there. Songs like "Harlem","Who is he and what is he to you" and "Aint no sunshine". I love his naturalness and easy. The brotha got lots of soul.

But there is no way that he`s up there with Bobby Bland. And Isaac Hayes`s and Lyn Collins` version of "Sunshine" beat Bills by far.

Its okay that you have your own opinion. But dont downplay the other versions unless you have heard them.

rolleyes

No panties in a bunch here Soulpower. I am just fucking with Ellis as he is a good friend of mine, and I think he gets the joke.

Ooops... I guess you feel attacked by my heavy wisdom! lol

I'm sorry. No hard feelings, I just wanted to give you a listening recommendation. And I should have marked my last post with an emoticon which shows that I am "at easy" with the topic. So here it is: mr.green

this much is true... bill withers is really known for his songwriting more than his singing... and, honestly, there are few who can touch his brilliant songwriting... really, it takes a damn good songwriter to come up with a wonderful and meaningful song called "cold bologna"...

but bobby "blue" bland is one of the greatest vocalists of all-time... anyone who has ever heard "little boy blue" "i'll take care of you" "cry cry cry" or "ain't nothing you can do" would even think of disputing this...

having bobby bland sing one of your songs is a blessing and a curse... you'll probably never hear your song sound that damn good again...

Where can I hear Lenny's version? I prefer Bill's over any I've heard...

"I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know..."

He was stalling because he forgot the words.

Here are a couple of versions:

Bill Withers

Michael Jackson

There was a young group of kids named Mista that did a cover of this that I enjoyed. They had a hit on the charts called "Blackberry molassas" sometime in '97 or '98. I wonder what happened to some of these groups??

Never heard of them, but thanks Ellie. Here goeth the Soul 4 Real version. I wish it was longer. I used to love their jam 'Candy Rain'. They reminded me a lot of the Jackson 5.

Soul 4 Real

Isn't it annoying to listen to the same song over and over again--even if it's different people singing it?lol I have found that, yes, it is. I still want to hear Kravitz.
