Ain't No Sunshine... Who's version of that AWESOME song do you prefer; the soulful rendition that Bill Withers made famous, or the rock-laced version by Lenny Kravitz???
I like the original myself. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

I used to prop the cover up at the end of my bed so the last thing I could see at night was CUTE ASS MJ in that apple hat with that BEE-YOU-TEE-FULL 'fro . I was in the fourth grade when it came out and totally in love --I'ma have to dig it out and take a listen. "Sherman, set the 'Way-Back' Machine edit. . ." Definitely the MJ version. Not just cos I'm a fan. I must have heard every version of this song, but MJ is the only one who does something interesting with the "no no no no no" part! Talk about SOUL! And he was THIRTEEN and did it the same year as the original. Totally blows me away and it's probably my fav of his solo Motown stuff.

How many "I know"'s does Bill sing in that one? This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

The versions by Lyn Collins and Isaac Hayes (live in Wattstax) get under my skin the most.
Btw, its Isaac who delivers the most "I know I know"s.. "Peace and Benz -- The future, made in Germany"

Yes, it's just amazing. Where did he get all that from back then? You might that such soul in one's voice comes with the years and life's experience.

I like the original myself. There has only ever been "one" version. Period. "Climb in my fur."

Soul for Real does an excellent acapella version. It's my favourite next to the original. It's too short though. But great none the less. Definitely check it out!

That's why smokey described him as an 'old soul'. Personally, it would be the mj version (what can i say...it's AMAZING) BUT my fav motown michael solo piece is Ben-- always makes me cry... Bill Withers all the way baby!!! It's short, sweet, and to the point. It gets to me everytime, not in a weepy sort of way, but the passion of missing somebody. I like the instrumental version by Boney James, which is much longer than the original. Never heard the MJ version, or don't remember. Definitely haven't heard Lenny's version. "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

Bill Withers, no contest.
How do you turn a duck into a soul singer? Put it in the microwave until its bill withers.

minneapolisgenius said: You suck ass. And you are wrong too. I am afraid that he is right. I love Bill Withers, he put some great music out there. Songs like "Harlem","Who is he and what is he to you" and "Aint no sunshine". I love his naturalness and easy. The brotha got lots of soul. But there is no way that he`s up there with Bobby Bland. And Isaac Hayes`s and Lyn Collins` version of "Sunshine" beat Bills by far. Its okay that you have your own opinion. But dont downplay the other versions unless you have heard them.
