the O'Jays... bad muthafuckas... i was going somewhere with a lady friend of mine recently, and i had a mix cd of 70s soul songs in the cd player... "stairway to heaven" by the o'jays came on, and it floored her... i think all total, she ended up playing the track over about 3 times...
her: who is this? me: the o'jays, girl... her: the who? me: no, not tha damn who... this is the muthafuckin' o'jays... her: never heard of 'em, but their voices are amazing... this is beautiful... me: you've heard of the o'jays... ya know... "love train" her: huh? me: people all over the world... join hands... start a love train... her: nope... me: money money money... mooonaaay... her: never heard of it... later on that evening, i prayed for the girl... ... i feel bad for somebody who has never been hipped to the o'jays before... that's some sad shit, right there... so i asked the Lawd to watch over her, until i was able to give her the hook-up... and hook-up, i did... i burned a cd for her of my favorite o'jays songs... and after listening to it a few times, i decided to burn a copy for myself, too... ... full length albums are cool, but sometimes it's nice to have all your favorites in one place... needless to say, she was diggin all over it... i don't think she'd ever heard anything like it before... poor sheltered people and their poor sheltered existences... i think i'm gonna have to take her to the School of Funky Sweet Nasty Goodness and get her hip to some other stuff, too... but in the meantime, i've been listening to that cd almost non-stop for a few days now... and i always knew that the o'jays were bad muthafuckas... but recently, i've been really feeling just how bad they are... and just how little recognition they get... so let's all praise the o'jays... here are my favorites... 1. Love Train [2:55] 2. Sunshine [3:41] 3. Backstabbers [3:05] 4. When the World’s at Peace [5:18] 5. You Got Your Hooks in Me [5:32] 6. For the Love of Money [7:16] 7. Now That We Found Love [4:39] 8. Give the People What They Want [4:09] 9. Let Me Make Love to You [3:34] 10. Livin’ For the Weekend [6:35] 11. Stairway to Heaven [6:14] 12. Message in Our Music [6:20] 13. Darling, Darling Baby (sweet, tender love) [4:16] 14. Cry Together [5:32] 15. Used Ta Be My Girl [3:59] 16. Your Body’s Here With Me (but your mind’s on the other side of town) [4:47] Mr. Ellis Dee-licious, the Official NPGigolo

Ain't the geetar intro sweeet? so sweet it makes my mouth water... the best though, is the way they break it down in "cry together"... i think that's probably my favorite... or the intro to "just let me make love to you"... where the band is going full throttle... the drums rolling... and he keeps repeating "just... just... just... just... just"... then it stops... "just let me"... band kicks back into a slow soul groove... "make loo ooove to you"... that's it right there... and the way he keeps repeating "i won't stop, i won't stop, i won't stop"... that song gets me every time... In 1987,the O'Jays bounced back with one of their best singles in years..."Lovin You".Do you guys remember that song? It ranks up there with their best 70s slow jams.
Another memorable O'Jays song is "Brandy" from their excellent 1978 album 'So Full Of Love' (a must-have for R&B lovers).I'm still waiting, praying and hoping that we will get a multi-disc O'Jays box set someday.

"the ultimate o'jays" by sony is probably the best... but you should also pick up the one put out by the right stuff for the years following that... i think it's called "the best 1976-199?"... Mr. Ellis Dee-licious, the Official NPGigolo

The O'Jays r a cool group. What do u think of Eddie's son, Gerald Levert?. I think he is a great singer. Have u got the 'Father & Son' album they did, that was cool.

It's hard to pick a favorite O'Jays' album, but 'So Full Of Love'(1978) would be a strong choice.70s soul music doesn't get any better than this album. The dramatic "Cry Together",the catchy "Used To Be My Girl","Brandy","Sing My Heart Out" and "This Time Baby" (which was covered a year later by Jackie Moore, whose version is more Disco) are all superb songs.Producers Gamble and Huff were at the top of the game, and the O'Jays have never sounded better.

Yeah, there are numerous O'Jays compilations out there. That's why I wish there was a multi-disc box set that gathers up all the hits in one place (with key album tracks, live versions, outtakes, etc). One problem with many of these "Best Of" CDs is that they never seem to include ALL the hits, they only concentrate on a specific era. It's worth noting that the O'Jays have been recording from the late 60s to the present,so only a 3 or 4-CD box set could collect all the hits without leaving anything out.But until we get that box set, these two CDs are probably your best bet.The first compilation concentrates on the early 70s (1972-76),while the second compilation covers the years 1976-1991. 'The Ultimate O'Jays' (Epic/Legacy,released in 2001) "I Love Music" "Back Stabbers" "Love Train" "Put Your Hands Together" "992 Arguments" "When The World's At Peace" "For The Love Of Money" "Give The People What They Want" "Survival" "Time To Get Down" "Sunshine" "You Got Your Hooks In Me" "Let Me Make Love To You" "Stairway To Heaven" "Family Reunion" "Livin' For The Weekend" 'The Best Of The O'Jays 1976-1991' (The Right Stuff, released in 1999) "Message In Our Music" "Darlin Darlin Baby (Sweet Tender Love)" "Work On Me" "Used Ta Be My Girl" "Brandy" "Cry Together" "Sing A Happy Song" "Forever Mine" "Girl,Don't Let It Get You Down" "Your Body's Here With Me (But Your Mind Is On The Other Side Of Town)" "Lovin' You" "Let Me Touch You" "Have You Had Your Love Today" "Serious Hold On Me" "Don't Let Me Down" "Emotionally Yours" "Keep On Lovin Me" There is also a recently released 2-CD compilation called 'The O'Jays Anthology' that you might wanna investigate. It seems like a good buy,but in my opinion,it concentrates too much on their latter material (80s and 90s),and skimps on the early material.
