I find him too derivative of other, more accomplished musicians; in the same way that Guns N' Roses are derivative of Aerosmith, The Crowes are to the Faces, Rod Stewart and the Stones, Lenny Kravitz to Prince, Hendrix and the Beatles, and Stone Temple Pilots are to Pearl Jam.

But OK. He's copied his style from Prince - straight up - about 80% of it - his dance moves from Michael Jackson and his musical chops pretty much from equal parts of both of them. "Copying" songs is an accusation I generally reserve for the likes of MC Hammer and Puff Daddy, at least in terms of direct dupication. Perhaps "copy" was too strong a word.

Maybe I should clarify. I LIKE some of TTD's songs, and actually own 2 of his albums, but I never listen to them because the limits of my appreciation are ceilinged by my recognition of the material's imitative style. Like I LIKE "Are You Gonna Go My Way" but only to the point where I hear "Are You Experienced" wafting around in my head. I can't listen to Trent's stuff without IMMEDIATELY and REPEATEDLY thinking of someone else - usually Prince - and lord knows Prince did it better.

But since you asked, he's also "copied" Little Richard, George Michael, Living Colour, James Brown, Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield...there are more...I suppose it's a question of taste and that you could argue the same thing about Prince. There ARE similarities - too many for my liking, and i guess that's my problem. It's TOO much like Prince.

When I listen to Prince, I can hear all of those influences (plus a million more) but I always got the feeling that he was combining them into something fresh and original. TTD always struck me as "copying", sort of like the difference between randomly mixing the ingredients in your refrigerator and actually COOKING something. When I hear TTD, I hear OTHER songs...Same with Lenny Kravitz, for instance...

I could be more specific if I'd listened to it more in the last 8 years, but, alas, and like I've said, he doesn't hold my interest that long.

More power to anyone who enjoys it though. Knock yourselves out.

It's just opinion, and granted, mine can be strong occasionally.

I just saw TTD's performance of "Designated Fool" on the Orlando Jones show a few minutes ago. hmmm I don't really know what to think of him now. I mean, it looks like his musical mojo is still going, but it looks like he's just too old to be jumping around and stuff. It wasn't pathetic, but not redeemable enough either.

Sananda sounds NOTHING like Prince. His voice has a Sam Cook-ish quality. The growl of Teddy Pendergrass with a smudge of Percy Sledge. His lyrics are poetic. Read them. They read like poems (much more so than Prince or MJ). Its no secret that he's observed both P & MJ, but his sound is original. He's done no more "copying" than Prince or any other artist out there who has developed their own sound.

It might look that way, but actually TTD comes from another corner. His first tours included Rolling Stones covers that sounded brilliant.

TTD stems from the traditional Rhythm & Blues corner. His link with Prince is that he stole some attitude and maybe the way he presented himself.

Prince never went nitty gritty musically the way TTD went on his first solo tour.

Well said! Every artist is influenced by other artists in one way or another. To me Sananda's style is as original as Prince's! All the comparisions with Prince mainly started because Prince was such a big star when TTD became famous. As they both were talented young black artists, who had their own style that was not easily to be labelled as it was not restricted to one music genre and were capable of writing (lyrics and music), playing and producing their own stuff the media had found their "new Prince". When I listen to Sananda he does not remind me of Prince at all, there's a lot of other artists out there who sound a lot more than Prince than he does.

herb4, good response. To me though, Sananda doesn't remind me of Prince at all. To me he has his own style that I can't easily compare to others.

I guess it's down to individual perception.

TTD is an amazing talent & highly unappreciated like so many Great artists. I suppose like Prince he was partly to blame for his own downfall but like always the media blew things out of proportion as far as comments that TTD made.
Let Her Down Easy is one of the most beautiful songs ever.

Hey CalhounSq! How you doing? I'm back again.

Is Orlando Jones the guy from "Evolution"?

I just downloaded all of TTD/Sananda's free MP3s. Have only heard a couple but not too shabby. I haven't really listened to him since the early 1990s. I used to love Delicate and Let Her Down Easy, well still do really.
Just somewhere in the middle,

Just posted this a few days ago at the topic "Sananda's new song FREE to donwload": wink

I think you have to rummage around on the site, but for the most part, I believe they're all still up. It's a bit like going on an Easter egg hunt.

Yup, you can find 12 songs to download and listen to his whole album as well.

To make the "hunt" some easier here some clues
Celebration
Mona Lisa's Laughing
Moon River
Birthdaygift
WildCard

Easy does it wink

But don't forget that Sananda's 40th birthday was on March 15th 2002, at this time N.E.W.S. has not seen the light of day. So it could only be the other way round lol

"Undeniably"

Probably one of his greatest tracks ever.

Forget "Introducing The Hardline..." (although my mate is in the video to "Sign Your Name"), he did that for the skes of releasing a commercial album..
When he goes to school on "Neither Fish Nor Flesh"... the evolution begins.

"Vibrator" is quite a defined yet slept on album. kinda like Lewis Taylor.

Just thought I'd let you know I happened upon a second hand copy of Symphony or Damn at Redeye Records Second Hand today for only $10 (Australian).

On top of that I found Wildcard! on import at HMV for $42 AUD.

So far, S or D doesn't quite live up to the hype in my book although I haven't heard it all yet.

But Wildcard! is the bomb and more! Listening to it right now...it's really good! music

So i could say hendrix, prince, pearl jam and aerosmith are derivative of lots of musicans that came before him, like buddy guy, james brown, neil yooung and led zeppelin, on this order. So what?

Guns N roses with appetite for destruction kicked aerosmith ass, Stone Temple Pilots does not sound like Pearl Jam they sound much better, much more intricaed. just listen to the purple album, or tiny music, that's not pearl jam at all. Lenny Kraviz is derivative of Prince, Hendrix and the beatles in the same way Prince is derivative of his main 3 influences.

He was on Leno too not long ago. The song was good but his dancing was embarassingly bad. He and Andre, who did it better on Letterman, are doing unorthodox dances kind of like those Prince used to do. Generally that's a good thing but at TTD's age it looked strange to say the least.

Wild Card I haven't heard yet, but have downloaded a few of his non-album songs. Funny that I don't find myself going back to listen...but I will be getting the Wild Card because I think TTD's better than Lenny.

Neither Fish, Nor Flesh, only a small portion of that album is great. Not brilliant, that's an overused word. I listened to the whole thing the other day and TO ME, the impression I got is how much he was into 60's soul and The Beatles.

Lots of James Brown and cheesy musicianship by other players on there. He was trying to be too much of something innovative. Dated just somewhat. That last song where he has all the voices singing acappela, that one reminds me of a bunch of cats meowing.

Hardline According to TTD Not PURE FUNK. No. Not. Nope. It does have Funk, but it's watered down a bit. Smoothed out. But it's rocks and does have some serious British Soul. A very confident and suprising debut. The singles are the best.

Vibrator I agree. Yes, a great Rock and Soul ALBUM, ALBUM. Holding On To You and Undeniably are fabulous!

Sympathy Or Damn Now that's a BRILLIANT album! Castilian Blue is incredible. It pops, it sparks, it Funks, it ROckS! It's a must! It's his Sign"O".
