The genius of Jane Child Here is one woman WB should have NEVER let go of! I was passing through her fansite an was disappointed to see that the webmaster has let her site go. In parting, he left an unreleased song that tops 90% of the shit I hear passing for "good" these days. Its a pretty ballad and if I didn't know she was white, I would swear she was Janet + Tamia.
Here's the track: Fallin' - Jane Child Sounds a HELL of a lot better than that "other" "Fallin'. Admittedly, the title is not original, but her "Falling" sounds GOOD. I thought she was actually giving Prince competition in unique arranging department when she dropped her first CD. Most who remember her remember that she was the "chick who sang "Don't Wanna Fall In Love". I REALLY liked her 2nd CD Here Not There She showed her true skillz on this record and songs like "Heavy Smile", "Sarasvati" and "I Do Not Feel as You Do" show how above the line her arranging skills are while "Mona Lisa Smiles" is as tight as Janet Jackson's "If" She works the shit out of a bass synth on "Perfect Love" and Her voice on "I Do Not Feel As You Do" is HAUNTING! The last time I was this impressed by a little white chick, she went by the name of Teena Marie. Most people didn't even know she released a third CD called "Surge". It seems to me like the TRULY talented like Jane Child, Mint Condition, etc. get swept under the rug while sub par half asses get pumped to the ceiling. Even on here, cats hailing Andre 3000 as the next Prince when the brotha can't sing his way out of a shoebox. Fuck it. Lenny Krapshitz came up the same way. I wish a fucking meteor would crash into the Mtv satellite so folks could actually LISTEN to music again and stop WATCHING music videos. Then maybe folks would stop making stars out of unworthy half asses. Jane's work is worthy of the title "pop/R&B genius". You orgers that ain't hip should GET HIP. Her work is tight. Her songwriting is deep and her music is complex as hell. Her voice is above and beyond a LOT of singers and she's doing most of it all on her own! Talk about the "female Prince"! Maybe somebody will take over the janechild.org site and get it running again? Peep the song and SPEAK ON JANE IF YA KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS WITH HER!

She hated her fame, tho...is that the reason she left? Nope. Bizness as usual at WB. Her video for "Welcome To The real World" went WAY over budget and she never sold enough for WB to compensate for its investment. Then, they fucked her second release up by dropping the only lukewater song on her CD (Here Not There) and only playing it on soft rock stations. If they had pushed "Mona Lisa Smiles", I bet there would have been a different story. Tracy Bonham ripped Jane's singing style and got herself a minor hit with "Mother Mother". That's when you know you've done something right; when artists bite your shit and blow up doing it. I swaer Alanis HAD to have heard Jane's CD as well. The difference is Jane is an R&B head. You hear Stevie in her music as well as others. She ain't fakin' the funk. Too bad people are sleepin'.

I just remember the interest in her being quite overwhelming for her and that she was taken aback by it...understandably..."I Don't Wanna Fall In Love" blew up, huge---and she didn't want to do anything except for let the song play and the video air... I love the song "Welcome To The Real World", but have never seen the video for it...Over the budget---is it that good?

The video was DIFFERENT. I liked it, but I could see how the mainstream at that time may have had trouble with her "witch look". Jane was doing the "piercing thing" way before it was cool. Still, she is brilliant.

I wish she had stayed with her fans a bit longer...

Damn...finally an artist worth talking about gets some attention here.
I didn't know about Janes's 3rd cd. Her first 2 records are better than 90% of anything being played today on radio. I gotta check out the link to fallin'.

I used to sing that song to my little girl when it was time for her to go to bed every night, If I had friends over we all would sing it...it wasn't until she turned 15 that she told me she hated it.. I love jane child I need to know where to get the other 2 CD's I remember thinking she was the female Prince back in the day and when Nikki Costa came out I thought of her again, with that great voice she has...where is she? I LOVE her Answers section - no questions - just the answers:
Toronto, Canada. Hollywoodland. Basically raw fruit and vegetables. Since 1967. “Words I Know” Two brothers. Anything with keys or strings. It’s hilarious. Usually the music first. No. Toronto, New York, and Tokyo. Any and all styles that are well done. The committed dose. It really happened. I really want to, and I have an amazing band lined up… A 1972 Citroen DS 21. Avant Couture and vintage. Both. AND HOLY CRAP - half her songs are up there for download! http://www.janechild.com/music_dl.html [This message was edited Thu Sep 25 15:32:05 PDT 2003 by otan] The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

Aww...that's so sweet...lol Good morning, butterfli... I sang it to my daughter last night for the first time and you know what, she liked it...lol...it tickled her so. I changed the words a bit tho---"time to go" to "time for bed"...and, because bedtime for her is at "9:00"pm, I fit that in there as well... Enjoy your day... It's Chanel's 11th birthday today, and I'm getting started at preparing a Birthday Breakfast for her before school Chanel Happy Birthday
