Big Boi sat in with the band performing hits during the breaks; and Andre3000 performed "Hey Ya" with a band.

How was the performance? I guessing it wasn't good since you didn't say anything.

It was a'ight. Although there was a band, Dre was singing over his own vocals during most of it. And it was hard to recreate the energy of the video cuz Letterman's audience is set back so far behind; and Dre still performs like a rapper, staying close to the mic.

I suspect as he grows more comfortable with the guitar, he'll eventually get on stage with one.

It's clear he studied up on the sounds that preceded him (Pfunk, Clinton, Prince, etc.); he just needs to study up on their performances.

The back up singers and band members all wore long red Dracula capes--a reference to "Dracula's Wedding"--which makes me wonder if he is working on a stage show even though he said he wasn't touring.

I would've liked to have seen him on tour but after reading where he said he's bored by live permormances and he's usually thinking about what he's gonna eat later, I was a little disappointed. I think i'll save my money if he takes it on the road, nothing i hate more than an Insincere performance, it's kinda like bad sexx.

you should read that article again (vibe, right?). it just doesn't appeal to him ANYMORE he said. the challenge is gone. that's why he's stopped touring. he'll return onstage when he thinks he's capable of playing instruments and of delivering a good show.

Yeah that's when he began to come alive. That energy was missing during most of the performance tho. Maybe it's Letterman's set as well that kills it.

I honestly think that at this point in time, Dre flat-out needs a band! I understand that he's still an MC at heart, but the type of music he's doing now requires a live set, IMHO. David Whild and Donny Mathis were good on guitars, but he needed Aaron Mills on bass, Kevin Kendricks on keys, and perhaps Victor Alexander on live drums and could've done away with Cutmaster Swiff on the 1's and 2's.

Are you familiar with the controversy where ?estlove from the Roots allegedly said that at one of Outkast's performances last year their guitars weren't plugged in (i.e., the band was not really playin)?

No, I didn't hear about that...but I'm not surprised by any negative comment ?uestlove said about any other artist. That nigga sucks anyway, so he really should've kept his fat-azz mouth closed. Keep in mind that this is the same muthafucka that said Lauryn Hill can't get "down and dirty like The Roots" cause she's so stuck on that "Stevie Wonder-type shit."

Donny Mathis and David Whild (Kast's guitarists) are REAL musicians. Donny's from the ol' school and I've seen them both play live before, so I seriously doubt that they weren't really playing.

The bottom line is ?uest is a fuckin' hater and a hypocryte because why the fuck is he and James Poyser riding Prince's dick so hard by jacking his sound? (ie. Common's "*69," Jaguar Wright's "I Can't Wait," D'Angelo's "Africa").

That was pretty much my assessment. I think the critical and commercial reception The Love Below is getting is going to further embitter ?uest cuz when Common's Electric Circus came out, people were basically like it was Common trying to do Outkast... and that pretty much pissed ?uest off.

When I saw Outkast perform, they seemed pretty plugged in, to me... there was no way the guitar solos and improvisations could have been faked.

I agree though that Dre's gonna have to grow his band, if he wants to perform live. I think he's only gonna do these promo appearances while he hones his live showmanship.

Uh just so you know playboy Prince is playing on *69, that could be why the track is so P influenced. biggrin BTW I don't mind people jacking the sound especially if they're doing it better than the boy himself nowadays. I never knew that about ?uest, I always thought he was a positive figure in hip-hop, I guess i was wrong.

I like the fact that he help people to get into the industrey but I hate his cocky-ness. I could be dead wrong about this but something about most of Philly's young artists have the same vibe(cocky) and its just so damn pointless. If you haven't achieved that much and you're that cocky, imagine what will you become when you're at you peek.

I'm also supriced that he didn't have much input in Eryka's "World Wide Underground" too!

nupwrsoul, what does that have to do with anything? i don't want to defend ?uest, but it was just an observation. outkast were critical about the roots' liveshow--this was ?uest's way of getting even. as far as i know ?uest loves the shit outkast has released throughout the nineties and on.

No, I didn't hear about that...but I'm not surprised by any negative comment ?uestlove said about any other artist. That nigga sucks anyway, so he really should've kept his fat-azz mouth closed. Keep in mind that this is the same muthafucka that said Lauryn Hill can't get "down and dirty like The Roots" cause she's so stuck on that "Stevie Wonder-type shit."

okaypimpn, ?uest can be negative, but so can y'all. he speaks his mind (almost) as freely as everybody at his homebase okayplayer.com or here at prince.org. i admit, sometimes he crosses the line, but so do y'all now and again. it's caused by things like frustration, misunderstanding or just not knowing what one's talking about. and that comment about lauryn hill; did he ever say that? i believe d'angelo and ?uest talked about her being cool, but not on the same road as to where d was going. she loved the more polished feel of music. d wanted a more rawer, dirtier feel. that's what d meant.

Donny Mathis and David Whild (Kast's guitarists) are REAL musicians. Donny's from the ol' school and I've seen them both play live before, so I seriously doubt that they weren't really playing.

come on. it doesn't mean they pretended everytime they were onstage. but outkast has relied on dat recordings on several occasions. the musicians that were present just pretended to play or had little contribution. it's a common thing. just look at all those 'top of the pops' performances.

The bottom line is ?uest is a fuckin' hater and a hypocryte because why the fuck is he and James Poyser riding Prince's dick so hard by jacking his sound? (ie. Common's "*69," Jaguar Wright's "I Can't Wait," D'Angelo's "Africa").

i don't know what you're saying. ?uest is an outkast-hater, because he jacks prince sounds? well, first things first, he's not an outkast hater imo. i can remember him being blown away by 'aquemini'. furthermore, does he really jack prince sounds? 'i can't wait' has been conceived by recreating an 80's prince beat. true. but 'star 69'; i still don't understand where all the prince-fuss came from. prince supposedly performed on it. can you hear him? not me. honestly. ofcourse the outro IS prince--he and femi created it. 'africa'? i believe i've said this before, only the drums have been inspired by prince's 'i wonder u'. just the few beginning bars of that song. the rest is genuine d'angelo. Do you know how much ?uest produces musically? ofcourse a prince influence is heard now and again--the man still is one of ?uest's musical heroes.

thanks for reading my reply.

It has to do with my response to okaypimpn saying that Dre needed a live band. In his post, okaypimpn criticized the MC-style set up; and I thought ?uest's observation was relevant because it raised questions about Outkast's live performance.

Listen to the chorus in headphones, you can hear him though his voice is being ran through an effect. Personally I think it's him, I know Prince is a fan of Common and I don't think its to far fetched considering, Common has performed at Paisely a couple times.
