Is Andre 3000 picking up where Prince left off?

Around the ending of his Warner Bros. days? Some agree. Others disagree. Go here and tell me what you think.

I personally feel that there is only one Prince, but Dre is probably the closest thing to an artist bringing something original and unexpected to the table (much like Prince did back in the day). You never know what to expect on each album.

Prince kinda took his fans through a style and creativity rollercoaster from every album in the 80s (ATWIAD was 60s-like psychedelica, Parade was like a jazzy-type funk hoedown, SOTT explored a lot of rock).

When they were on 106 & Park the other day, they showed the full picture on Dre on the album cover and it has him holding a purple smoking gun. I wonder if this may be sometype of subliminal homage to Prince (seeing as Prince used a similar one on the Love Symbol's album pictures-the one where his mic in a gun).

Thanks! lol It'll probably be on the insert of their album. If not, I'm sure it will circulate on the web sooner or later.

Andre's got his own thing happening, sure there's massive Prince influence (amongst others) but give him props on his personal merits.

Love "Hey Ya", video cracks me up with the camp jockeys on backing vox etc. hehe

Most definitely. nod

Did you also notice the casket in the background of the video? I think it kind of signifies burying the "old" and introducing the "new." Perhaps it's a metaphor for "The Love Below" since most caskets are below the ground. Who knows?

OUTKAST IS THE SHIT!!!I'm so glad that thet are coming out with something new. They r a breath of fresh air n hiphop.

There could never be another Prince (period) but it's
obvious that Prince has influenced some artist. Hopefully they can take what they've learned and make music in general better.Because right now, it's in the crapper.

I'm listening to the album now, and I just got to 'Spread', which is just, awsome!

There's a lot of George Clinton on the album too it seems - 'Happy Valentines Day' and the wild guitar on 'Love Hater'.

The jazziness is definately Parade inspired.

Let's hope he ditches the dead-weight on the other disc.

I downloaded it like everybody else.

These days it's far too easy to download albums, and now singles are dead there's no way I'm buying an album without hearing it first.

I can think of loads of albums I've downloaded that were crap, and they ended up in the recycle bin, saved me £10.

In the case of this album, I love it, so I'm gonna slap down the cash for the CD.

Branching off onto another subject, mp3 is here to stay, I think record labels should think of some way to use it (other than posting fake tracks on p2p etc).

Singles are dead, kids can't afford/don't want to pay full wack of an album just for the song they like on MTV, so they should think about ways to utilise mp3s whilst making into the album a worthwhile product that merits a purchase because just downloading the music wouldn't be good enough.

Maybe access to members areas of the artists website, videos, interviews about the music (like DVD commentaries?), priority seating at concerts, fan club membership, photo galleries and such.

i dig andre 3000 however, since prince

has already been there and done that

andre does not hit the spot like

prince did

i love dre's creativity and i prefer

his rap combined with his singing

he shouldn't try 2 copy prince's

style, he should take the influence

2 another level

I don't know why there are so many comparisons to Prince. Andre is talented in his own right. I've heard the whole album, and the only song that made me think of Prince was 'She Lives In My Lap'.

A couple of my faves so far are Spread, Dracula's Wedding, and She Lives In My Lap.

People have been making comparisions to pioneering artists for years. It's not the first and sure won't be the last. If anything, it's a compliment to be "compared" to the likes of a legend. No one is denying the fact that Dre is an individual artist in his own right, it's just intresting to see someone continuing on with the funk, but making it their own.

she lives in my lap does remind me of p in the camille voice, but also parliament and funkadelic. i think there are more comparisons to be made with prince in the way that dre is so eclectic and when you hear them basslines that stand out in many of his songs..like on prototype for example. that bass is very reminiscent of p. there are a few other joints on there but i would definitely not try and say he is biting prince. he has said many times how much he admires prince, but he praises george, sly, jimi, and jb just as often. as essence had said or something to the effect of...let him stand on his own merit.

dre's album has me pumped for how it might influence others to expand a little more. but don't knock big boi yall. his album is very cool as well. outkast's fans will still dig his album speakerboxx. don't buy the set and choose to sleep on big boi's.

I hear a lot of P-Funk in their music. Think a lot of early P-Funk sounds are mistaken for Prince music since he was in the later.

while there is a Prince Influence along with P-Funk,Hendrix&Sly in there, after hearing Andre's Album I Hear more Sugarfoot than anything else vocally.especially on "Prototype" which reminds me of Sugarfoot mixed with Charlie Wilson.I can hear alot of Sugarfoot in Andre's presentation singing wise.I liked His Album pretty good but it went on 7-8 tracks to long for me.He easily eclipses Big Boi's set but having said all of that they both need one another&this Album still doesn't quite match there Previous Albums to Me on a whole.

Much praise to Outkast. I am definitely feeling their two lead singles "The Way You Move" and "Hey Ya." I am totally in love with the latter. They are genuine talents with ecclectic rhythms and lyrics. I give them tremendous artistic respect.

Dawgs n Dun Dizzles..

Of course Dre reminds us of Prince. Everyone was influenced by him. But, the key point here is...people were comparing Prince to everyone else during his heyday.

I'm witnessing the generation gap. My mentor told me once that Prince has nothing on James Brown. Every generation has an artist that will push the evelope on what the mainstream listens to.

Pharrell really reminds me of Prince. His falsetto and key change in a few of his records reminds of Prince records. Yo, Missy came out with a record a few years back that sounded like Internaitonal Lover.

The sign of a true gangsta artist, is when they are studied academically. Prince is on his way and most likely has already been "studied" at the collegiate level. That is the true sign of what was and what will be.

At the end of the day...it's just music. And we are really riding this man's jock...
