I think Fatboy SLim remixed it and it was the #1 single a couple of weeks ago. It was used to advertise some Sky SPorts package on TV and it just caught on. Not uncommon. Elvis got his last #1 single here last year too.

and they came out about 2 months after i tracked all of the original CD versions down, because i expected they'd never be done.

Elton John is the most media hungry sell-out whore in the entire entertainment business. There's no way ANYTHING would be ruled out. Re-masters are inevitable and the only sensible thing he'll do for a long time.
