She's not a one-hit wonder, but I know one thing: That damn "piano recital playing" has got to go! hmph!

She got Over Big time because She Jacked James Brown's "It's a Man's World" for "Fallin".She is Alright but having a Clive Davis in your Corner can make you seem like the 2nd-Coming.I give Him Props for working His Magic.Sony couldn't do mothing with Her so Clive Picked Her up&the rest as they say is History.I Heard the new track with Nas&Rakim "NY State of Mind"&they are gonna have to go back to the drawing board.cool Concept but Poor Execution IMHO.

You know, I never thought about this prior, but you're right, Man's World and Fallin are very similarly structured. I don't think that's why it was a hit though, nor do I think it was intentional.
I Put that out because I've followed CLive's Career for a real long time&there are noticeable patterns.when He first took over at Arista He had Barry Manilow for His 2nd Album cut "Mandy" which was Origianlly titled Brandy. His Formula for New Acts or Acts he is serious about doing Covers is nothing new.He did the same with Whitney Houston on her debut."Saving all my love for you" was originally done by Marlyn Mcoo.I also Bought a Barry Manilow Book&He hinted at how Clive Operates.also alot of Current Music Producers say that the way Radio is structured nowadays you gotta have a past Hit Riff or Groove to match a Modern Beat.

My Sentiments exactly. She is like that Little Girl that says to everyone on the Block I can play so&so&it's cute but not 5 Grammys&all these Sales interesting.

I think she was lucky to have one hit
It was all hype and I totally bought into it
I don't buy into the fact that the second album has to be worse than the first..Genuinely great artists keep improving all the time
I can't believe it has taken her so long to follow up her first album..It doesn't matter how good it is - an album every 2 or 3 years is just too long 4 an artist like her

her piano sounds like a toy piano on most of her songs anyway, like a fisher price model or something. i think shes an adequate player, but considering shes meant to be this virtuoso, youd think she could at least get a real, decent sounding piano (like fiona apple at least).

I don't dislike Alicia Keys, but I really feel that she was over-hyped.They acted as if her debut album was the most original, most unique, most groundbreaking debut album in pop music history! I mean, come on! Her songs are basically just typical modern-day R&B. She really only had one legitmate hit,"Fallin" and that song is just a conventional piano ballad. There's nothing deep about the lyrics.I think the fact that she plays piano had alot to do with it.For some reason, the media and Grammy folks act as if that is so unusual and rare (I guess they never heard of Patrice Rushen).

That's the problem with many of today's artists. The hype machine makes them out to be larger-than-life and in the end, they never really live up to the hype.Instead of giving these artists time to grow, experiment and BECOME something truly amazing (the way Prince was allowed to),we're ready to give them a ton of Grammys for a mediocre debut album that breaks no new ground.

I have seen Lynch Mobs nicer than some of you "music critics". Alica is a talented young lady with a decent voice. You mean to tell me you guys listened to "Butterflies" and say she can't sing? Who's a better singer, Madonna??? I dare you to say yes. Michelle Branch?? Britney Spears??? Jessica Simpson???
I think if God came to earth and recorded an album, people would find something wrong with that too.

Who even cares about having "hits"?? When I go to the store to buy an album, I never care if the masses will call it a hit record. If the album moves me I could care less about it's position on some top ten chart. And if there are people on this site buying music because its on the charts, you are missing some great gems out there. And I love when talentless people say great musicians suck. People who will never know how it feels to play in front of an audience. Never even heard of a Gm7b5 chord or how to find it, but are music experts.

Like I said in my post,I don't dislike Alicia.I think she's a beautiful young woman with alot of talent. And yes,she has a decent voice. But let's be honest, her debut album wasn't very groundbreaking or original.A song like "A Woman's Worth" sounds like everything else in R&B right now,and there's nothing profound about her lyrics. As others have pointed out,Alicia has benefitted from the Clive
Davis hype machine. Can you honestly tell me that Alicia deserved all those Grammys, while a more worthy artist like India Arie is ignored?

Good point. Hard to argue that Arie fact. You hit me from left field with that one. I will go to another thread now.
