Outkast and their clever new scheme to sell records.

Pretty inventive idea for Outkast to do a double cd, one with Andre, the other with Big Boi. So, if you hate Andre, you still have to buy his album to get Big Boi. or vice, versa. And they are allowed two different videos, from each album; that is double the time on Bet or Empty Vee.

And the videos are pure genius; the songs are amazing, and really catchy. I see big hits.

Andre's song is almost rock. Wonder if it will last on BET.

Pretty inventive fellas. That is what rap should be about. They should sell loads of records. Prince could learn something from these blokes.

it's actually a pretty inventive way for a duo to go solo, but still sell some records when people aren't interested in them as solo acts.

Remember Left Eye challenged the other TLC girls to do the same thing few years back. Sadly her solo LP flopped terribly on release.

The Big Boi single doesn't impress me as a song or a video, very much the same old modern rap joint. If they were sold singularly I might just buy Andre's and download Big Boi's out of curiousity.

I don't think it was released in America (the single was, I believe) so it was hard to judge. However, I did see many imports of "Supernova" selling at one store for $9.99, so that must say something about how porrly it sold.

I think it was a great marketing tactic they used to release "Hey Ya" as the first single. Not only is the song funky as hell, it's great for TRL and their public.

It was deemed so bad the US end of the label didn't think it worthy of a release.

I was nodding my head with understanding and interest right up to the very last sentence of your post. Why is it that so many people feel it is their duty to tell Prince how Prince should handle Prince's career?

Personally, I really don't see anything wrong with the way that Prince sells his music now. Futhermore, what may work for Outkast may not necessarily work for Prince and vice versa. For me, as long as the music from Prince is available and there is relatively easy access to his music, then that is THE most important thing to me. And I'm not trying to single out "2freaky", but I've seen several posts along the same lines. So it seems to me that some fans are obsessed with Prince being popular and on the Top 10 list on their radio and I just think that whole notion is played out. I mean, just let it go for heaven's sake.

Prince is free and doing his own thing. Let him do it.

Hey Ya needs repeatedly play for most people to "get it." That can only be accomplished with industry muscle. That is the case for most of Andre's stuff, as was the case for most of Prince's stuff, which was for its time very outta left field.

If Dre wasn't feeling so ambivalent toward the industry, he would by far outshine Big Boi in this endeavor. Big Boi has Sleepy Brown in his corner and that will carry him a bit, but when it's all said and done folks are going to realize that the musically innovative element in Outkast came from Andre3000.

As far as this being a scheme, I think it's a last ditch attempt by everyone involved to maintain the identity of "Outkast" the group long after everyone seems to know that it is over for them as a duo. Which is sad. Dre and Big Boi balanced each other out well and maintained a creative tension.

However their protestations to the contrary, the facts are that Big Boi is gonna tour to support his disc while Dre has no interest in touring; and Dre moved to Hollywood to take up acting, resume music lessons on the sax and guitar, and is talking about going back to school. The split disc seems appropriate... more appropriate than a single disc where the songs go back and forth from one to the other.

The main problem with the Big Boi song is that the chorus doesn't go well with the fast, southern fried rap. But, that guy sure can rap fast.

The chorus is so catchy, it is like crack.

Hey Ya is an odd song, but listen to the music deep in the mix--genius.

Dre could Sell Solo but over the course of a Album I feel that Him&Big Boi Balance one another better as One than Seperate.I'm not that excited about this as much as I was 3 years back when I first heard about this Project.I'll still listen&get it but 3 years back this would have been cool when it was suppose to come out.

So how about a Prince double?

One side - Prince
The other O)+>

Or - Prince vs NPG

Cypress Hill did something similar, on Skull and Bones. It had a Rock side and a Rap side, including the same song on both (Rap) Superstar and (Rock) Superstar.

According to you Prince could learn something from everybody you like or start a thread about. Apparently he could learn something from Color Me Bad too.

why would it have been cooler back then?

because they didn't have their big break yet?

because the greatest hits album wasn't released?

Outkast wanted to Drop the Solo Double Set after "Stankonia" had Been out as to releasing that Greatest Hits that LA Reid had them Drop.they had there Big Cross-Over with "Rosa Parks" back in 98&of course a couple years later with "Ms jackson".I Should have said they wanted to drop this Set a couple Years back.but anyway it's been talked about for 3 Years just like TLC doing a 3 Solo Disc Set on laface.but things changed.either way Outkast gonna do Monster Business.they Got the Critics&a Solid Fan base.I give them Props for Hanging in th Game for a Decade especially in Rap/Hip-Hop.Because ask the Wu Tang Clan how soon folks Forget?Outkast is on the Pulse&On Folks Lips still.

The concept of a double solo venture may be 3 years old, but let us not confuse that with the music which is not as old. In fact, Dre just finished his album this summer, while Big Boi has been sitting on his since Jan/Feb. Big Boi's stuff may be a little bit older, but Dre's work is quite new.

Well actually Andre has songs on his album that he has been developing for at least 5 years or so.

True. But most were just ideas that didnt reach their finished state til this year. Musically and lyrically.
