Sly and the Family Stone - Fresh (alternate version)

I just got my hands one of the official mispressings of Fresh and omfg I can't believe this version wasn't supposed to see the light of day. Anybody else got this?

The music is essentially the same for all tracks with the exception of Babies Makin Babies. On that tune he created a totally different animal and it's much better in my opinion. The only song that is exactly the same is In Time. The rest differ with alternate background vocals, less horns, more guitar in some places. When they first pressed Fresh for cd format someone mistakenly grabbed the wrong masters. They were recalled immediately. I had been searching for this for almost 10 years.

Yes,I got that alternative version also
& it´s really intresting 2 hear the different sounds.
Like "If you want me to stay" with a clavinet & guitar
in the intro instead of that pianosolo,
but when I heard that alt.version of "Babies makin'babies"
I was totally knocked down.So funky & different from
the official,& those funky horn hits sounds so much
like Prince & ahead of it´s time.
The drums R clearer & more upfront in the mix on these songs
but some other stuff like background vocals is missing.
I wonder how this press could leak out.

I know that only the pressings that went out in longbox form have alternates.

I have both "Fresh" cd´s,the real 1 & the alternate
& the covers look identical but they have different
serialnumbers."In time" is the only song that
sounds the same.

I kinda feel bad 4 not getting into Sly Stone's stuff, ya know? Its embarassing 2 admit this lol but I only know this LP from the liner notes in the Crystal Ball(discussing "Make Yo Mama Happy").

My father hounds me big time 4 not getting their stuff, I dig stuff from over here and over there but I neva really got hooked 2 Sly's music.

I'm trying to tho, believe me!

Feeling bad edit

well young lady you SHOULD feel bad no no no! (just kidding) lol) but on the real, Prince worships Sly, and his music is directly influenced by him..so as a Prince fan, it would behoove you to check him out. biggrin

The bass line, horns & the drums R totally different.
It´s more funkier less laidback with the horns doing
stabs.

Wow!

I never knew this!

What a mistake, now I'm going to be on the look out for that!

How or where did you find the CD?

And for those who don't know much about Sly, try the Anthology CD, it's a best of compilation put together in the early 80's and it rocks!

It really shows where Prince got his inspriration and even ideas! Some serious Funk!

I had this on tape for years,I had given away my
"Fresh" cd 2 a friend but I still had the vinyl
when I saw "Fresh" cd on a store & bought it so I could
have 1 on cd,then it turned out I had gotten the alternative
I went back & listened 2 them other copys & they all were
the alternative.I don´t know where this store gets their
albums from but they never have the real 1,just the
alternative vers.

You gotta get yourself some Sly.I mean if you dig all the 70's Funk bands then you gotta start with one of the Inspirations of It all.Sly Covered so many Musical Bases it ain't even funny&He did it all in a realtively Short time.
