What Do People Have Against Erykah Badu's Image?

Whoa! lately, I've been witnessing alot of backlash against Erykah Badu's image in alot of boards and I even hear alot of callers in NYC's radio-stations talking about this(Its funny how folks 4got about the problems in their lives and turned their heads 2ward this). I neva thought people would pay 2 much mind about this. Here's an example, check it out:

And give me the feedback!

Folks always have something to say about somebody no matter how evil, or how good, or just HOW they are. Its human nature. Look ast the story of Jesus. They killed him. This is human nature...to talk shit, so to speak.

I used to be a big fan of hers, but for the past year or so she has turned me off. I can't why exactly, but I saw some interviews with her a couple of years ago and she tries to come off way too cool and hip. She also goes on and on about her spiritualness and sometimes that comes across as phoney too. She does have a unique voice and I loved her live album from a few years ago, but I've lost interest in her and her music. I think her head got too big.

Ha! lol So it's actually a bad thing to be a decent human being...

Whatever people think of her image, I could care less. All i know is that her music puts me in touch with something...dare I say spiritual? I gain so much strength from her albums. I cannot wait another fuckin day for this album to drop.

One thing they have against her is she's not adhering to the normal way female artists dress and talk{that's refreshing in a grand sense}...A lot of people think she's on a high horse and needs to come down. She is known to "drop knowledge"direct and indirect on her records and interviews...People have a tendency to get tired after awhile of an artist like this ...I'm just happy someone is talking about some of the stuff she has been bringing up ini her music...

Man, Badu deserves all of the positive recognition she can get for her song "Bag Lady" alone!!!

That song needed to be made right at the time it was made {right at the beginning of a new century}...She perfectly captured the sceneario of women who have experienced the pain, anger and bitterness of being done wrong in relationships. She was telling the women that men don't want a woman with all of that strife and drama going on in their life..."you can't hurry up... cause you got too much STUFF"...Then she amazingly summed it all up at the end when she explains what women want and that very want is the very thing that they need to heal..."betcha LOVE can make it better"..then she kind of leaves us hanging after that.....love from a man?....or love or self?"....hmmm

Check the BAG edit

Well thats what they were up in arms about a few years ago. I never said it was right or wronmg..but most people will trip if they are into a rapper who is streetwise and then gets a so called "queer eye" makeover..Im sorry but its true.

I'm okay with her music, for me, I guess it's the way she "comes across." I know I've mentioned the issues I had with her "Lee Press On Locks." The bare feet, the "spiritualness", the candlelighting, the Marge Simpson-like headwraps and outrageous dress, etc... It just comes off as being too contrived. But, who am I to say that this isn't who she really is? It just seems a bit over the top, IMO.

And no, the headwraps got too big! smile

Hey Deb, I'm going to take your quote and replace Erykah with Prince. A lot of folks feel the same way you do. I wanna pick on you because you have the most dignified response biggrin. Here goes:

I'm okay with his music, for me, I guess it's the way he "comes across." I know I've mentioned the issues I had with his Press and Curl hairdos, high-heel shoes, the "spiritualness", the color purple, the Austin Powers get-ups and outrageous dress, etc... It just comes off as being too contrived. But, who am I to say that this isn't who he really is? It just seems a bit over the top, IMO.

I've seen this attitude from her at Woodstock w/The Roots and during her performance at Bob Marley's celebration. She stopped the song midstream for no reason. And walking around like she's floating on air. I thought to myself, what an ass. I also hate that high pitch wail she does. So annoying. But she is talented. Two thumbs up for Mama's gun.

I know what everyone is saying about her "Dropping Knowledge"
but when you have some chicken heads like "Britney" dropping ignorance saying things like " your such a retard" to reporter, I mean I'll rather hear someone say something smart, regardless if it is contrived
I don't see her as having an ego, she just proud and has high self esteem
a strong, proud and smart black woman is a bit intimadating for some wink

If you want someone with an EGO and thinks to highly of themselves, look no further then Alicia Keys, I think I'm alergic to her attitude

Well, i've been listening to her new album these last days (it's pretty good), and a i have a few of her past albums (which are pretty good also), but she's not an artist i really 'feel' or really listen to the lyrics or anything. It's just some nice music i put on sometimes. That said, she does come of rather pretentious and self-referential. I don't know/care what her 'message' is, but sometimes, even when you'r not paying attention (like me), it gets in the way of the music. So i def. can understand why people wouldn't like her.

True there is difference from sending a message and "preaching" with Badu is guilty of

chickengrease your response made me laugh. smile I never thought about Prince that way. Not even during his bikini briefs and leg warmers period. What was more "OTT" (over the top) than that!? Guess I was really too jaded to notice then.

I could get rather tired of that too, and I thought I would. But on Mama's Gun she seems to change up that wail a few times.

I'm just now listening to this one. I did'nt like her debut album at all, and wasn't a fan of hers, but if you ask me, MG is more accomplished. This one is making headway with me.
