[color=blue:a3cca1b730:414de889fa:59cb9b0aac:19d6b94d0d]Exactly, Maxxx. Soul is old as gold and shines just as brightly. These "neo-soul" artists are just new nuggets.

I disagree because there is still soul music. Neosoul is a whole different genre. No disrespect but Luther did not do what Musiq Soulchild is doing. You can't put Anita Baker is the same genre as Bilal(my husband). That's just not right.

if you go by the Smoothed out stylings&arrangements then what Luther did back in the 80's&the same thing with Sade&Anita Baker wouldn't sound out of place at all on what Maxwell does for instance.

I agree. Didn't Maxwell use Sade's production team for "Urban Hang Suite"?

Neo-soul is NOT as different as you would think it is. It kinda comes down to how much soul music you actually know. I have heard Jazzyfatnastees's grooves that are reminescent of A Taste of Honey, Bilal's "Queen Of Sanity" sounds like it was lifted starightoff a Marvin Gaye album with Lenny William's style production on the track. New nuggets. Slightly different because times are different and instrumentation is different. (newer technology), but the SOUL is the same. Eryka is riding Chaka's tits all the way to the bank and Musiq...generic Stevie. I like Musiq, but he is sort of watered down Stevie at times. Hey, this is Prince.org! Prince is supposed to be the greatest soul singer EVER, right? I hear he's better than a hundred Luthers and a Curtis Mayfield? NNOOTT!!! LOL!

However, I could care less about who influenced who in this biz. Everybody walk down the route of their idols eversince the 1st days of creation.

I just can't swollow that "term" at all, I try to find whats so new about it so I could shut it up and chill but no sad

Indeed, Neo-soul is in many ways derivative, but I guess it's like this: If all the restaurants in my neighborhood serve fast food, and new Mexican, Thai and pizza joints open up in the neighborhood, I will go and appreciate the relative variety. Sure, it's not authentic Mexican, Thai or New York style, but it's enjoyable enough in its own right.

That's how I think of neo-soul. "Juslisen" is not "Talking Book," and "Colored Section" is not "What's Goin' On," and "Voyage To India" is not "Ask Rufus," but I enjoy them for the nice sound anyway.

BTW, for an orger, you sure are down on P a lot. Haven't you heard? Positivity rules this place! smile

True. You don't hear "neo-hip-hop" or "neo-alternative" or "neo-retro" to describe genres of music!

I guess most of U know this phenomen - neo-soul, also called newsoul. Actually, it's nothing new.

Peeps like Alicia, Maxwell, Musiq, Dwele and many more - the ones who keep neo-soul up and don't let it die.

Which other artist are worth listening to if I wanna dive down into the SOUL?

The term "Neo-Soul" is so overrated and fabricated it's not even funny. Half of these cats that claim to be "Neo-Soul" artists just felt it so because their moms and pops listened to Stevie Wonder, wore dashikis and afros, and were a part of something back then (the 60's and 70's). Most of these artists out now aren't even talking about nothin'.

Not to take anything away from what they do, but a REAL soul artist doesn't have to resort to swearing to get their point across. I don't ever recall seeing a Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, or Donny Hathaway album with a parental advisory sticker on it. Now I know I cuss on this board just as much as anyone else on here (as I'm sure most of the above artists probably do or did), but at least they had the decency not to put it in their music. If I want to hear a bunch of cursing I'll put on a hip-hop CD. I can't even stomach Jaguar Wright for the simple fact that she's being backed by what sounds like "good music" but cursing me out at the same time! I mean really...WHAT THE FUCK?!!! whofarted Oops! there I go again, lol, but seriously, I bet if you were to take away the Fender Rhodes, organs, drums, and MPC's, most of these artists wouldn't be able to hold a single note. Put them up against any pioneering artist and they would quickly be erased by the public.

Just my two cents...
