Neo-soul

I guess most of U know this phenomen - neo-soul, also called newsoul. Actually, it's nothing new.

Peeps like Alicia, Maxwell, Musiq, Dwele and many more - the ones who keep neo-soul up and don't let it die.

Which other artist are worth listening to if I wanna dive down into the SOUL?

check out d'angelo's 1995 debut 'brown sugar', that is
if you haven't already. it's cool, mellow soul mixed with
some hiphop, gospel and funk. people call d'angelo the man
that started the "neo-soul" movement.

the follow up to 'brown sugar', 2000's 'voodoo',
is nothing like the debut album. it's an album that
sounds more like a collection of jams than actual songs.
more raw funk and hiphop, but still very soulful overall.
it includes the hit 'untitled (how does it feel)', which
is said to be an ode to (the 'controversy'-era) prince.

if you are "studying" the neo-soul movement you should
check these albums out.

other artists that are important in this movement:
erykah badu ('baduizm' and 'mama's gun'), lauryn hill
('the miseducation of..') and perhaps even bilal ('first
born second')--although dude never got any real press,
i consider him to be a talent. others don't come to
mind as of yet.
don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
purple music does the same to my brain
i'm high, so high

If you want to check out some real "neo-soul", try British artists from the late 80's through the mid to late 90's. Although some of the current crop of neo-soul singers are good, the entire sound is becoming boring.

His cd "Instant Vintage" is quite interesting. It takes about three spins to fully appreciate the music.

Angie Stone, Bilal and Jill Scott will be your best bets. All the others are copys and not very good ones either.

My new favorite soul singer is Lizz Wright. The first time I heard the song "Salt" it brought me to tears.

As much as I like her, Angie sounds very derivative to me. IMHO, Badu and Jill are miles ahead of Angie.

I think you're also selling the "others" way short: Dwele, Remy, Vivian, Res, even Les Nubians, Floetry, etc.

I'd also presume that you wouldn't lump Badu, Maxwell and D'Angelo in that mix as "copies," as they preceded the 3 you mentioned.

In any event, this new generation is a helluva improvement over New Jack Swing!

BTW: a TRUE soul singer is not mentioned in neo-soul circles: Me'Sbell.

Stymie dear, check her "Soon As I Get Home" song music

One ?uestion tho, lets say if I released a whole set with nothing but an acoustic piano, upright bass, space guitar and live drums. Would I be a neo-soul? eek

All these artist you guys mentioned don't like the term and don't even wanna be associated with it.

I also hate the term 'neo-soul'. There is really nothing new about it. Folks are just going back to the way things used to be: Real singers, real musicians, live bands. It's really cool.

That is definitely an understatement. She is one of the very few bright spots in soul and music in general this year. Altho her cd came out last year I believe. I was surrounded by word of mouth by coworkers. It took me a minute to warm up to her, altho I saw her on a fluke before the cd came out. She is a Bay Area fave, and it's only a matter of time that she'll take R&B by storm.

Fave tracks: Closer, Romantic, Catch 22, Things Don't Exist, and Too Much the Same. I highly recommend checking out Goapele's songs.

People mention the usual suspects like D'angelo, Jill Scott and Maxwell when it comes to this idiom of music...but TTD was serving up hot vintage neo soul almost 10 years before any of those artists...

Obviously D'Angelo is the leader and I felt he didn't need for me to metion him. His work speaks for itself. Check out his cut on Roy's new album "I'll stay".

All the others, like I said, are crappy copys that we all can live without. And I own all those you metioned and more like the new guy Donnie and while they are GOOD singers, if I lost those CDs today I would not replace them.

I hope you don't take offence at my views I don't mean to offend. Just my 2 cents.

Agreed! Fantastic debut by an interesting artist.

Another worth checking out is "Subject" by Dwele.

I got the chance to see Dwele (and a host of others) at the Movement Festival in Detroit this past May. He gives a good show and has some great music -- definitely check out his material.

Exactly, Maxxx. Soul is old as gold and shines just as brightly. These "neo-soul" artists are just new nuggets.

I disagree because there is still soul music. Neosoul is a whole different genre. No disrespect but Luther did not do what Musiq Soulchild is doing. You can't put Anita Baker is the same genre as Bilal(my husband). That's just not right.
