Madonna.

I'm sat here listening to Bedtime Stories thinking that it's actually an ok album. confuse This was the album that tuned me out of her work in the first place! It's no Like A Prayer or Ray Of Light but it's not as bad as I had originally thought. I've had a love/hate relationship with Madonna for years, although I like quite a lot of her work she's never managed to move me in the way that Kate Bush, Bjork, Stevie Nicks and Tori Amos have and I can't work out what it is that's missing from Madonna's work to keep me from putting her up there with the above artists. She's a good pop star and I will always take an interest in her work (although the only album of hers that I still own is Ray Of Light) but I hope that one day the penny will drop and I will finally appreciate her talent more fully and consider her truly great. I have a feeling that one day I'll be buying all her albums again. Guess I shouldn't have given them away in the first place. mad

ps) I'm actually in the minority that thinks that American Life is a good album. boxed

Nice post. Bedtime Stories is defintely good, and was the the logical progression between Erotica and Ray of Life.

p.s. I think American Life is great!

i feel exactly the same way! i sold a lot of my madonna cds (except for like a prayer, ray of light, and her first two), however, i burned them first so if the mood ever caught me i'd have 'em. but yeah, she doesn't affect me the way tori or stevie or annie or sinead can. it's all about soul. madonna's music has purpose and motive but seems to lack soul...at least to me. american life is great because it seems like there is some soul to it. that's also what i loved about like a prayer and ray of light...there was something MORE behind the facade. i guess when you trade in your life for pop superstardom, you have to lose some of the urgency in your words because you HAVE to give the public what they want rather than do what you want.

UMMM those singers can SING! and have little thing that most pop stars don't have talent
Madonna will never ever be mentioned in the same breath as Bjork or Kate Bush EVER

If you remove the hype (well there use to be) and marketing sorounding Madonna, she just a below average artist with bad music and the worst vocals on the music scence

Lake Experience coming soon

You're wrong. "Madonna, Bjork, Kate Bush." I said it as I was typing. Same breath -- HA!!!

But seriously, even as a Madonna sycophant, I KNOW that Madonna is in a completely different league. You're right that she is a pop star, not a singer.

Ouch!

I didn't intend this to become a Madonna bashing thread, but I know what you mean. She's not a great singer but a lot of people consider her completely talentless and I think that's bullshit. There's a lot of legendary artists that I don't like but I at least understand why they are popular.

Madonna's succes has NOTHING to do with music or art
or talent
She was a product like Mac Donalds, cheap, tacky and left a bad after taste and if you consumed too much it could be deadly

and like Mac Donalds most people grow out of it

i think the lot of her *extreme* fans dont get this...those are some major people to be listed with..yet they want to declare her the queen of music and artistry..

no way!! she is just a shrewed sass...

She is a superstar, and a large part of her gig is to be provocative. On that alone, she always succeeds. It's quite fascinating to see how much some people hate her.

I consider MJ an 'artist' in the true sense of the word. Sure, he's an entertainer as well but he's written a lot of his work on his own and is one of the best male vocalists ever. And don't even get me started on his dancing! And he can play a good number of instruments, too.

Has anyone seen Madonna live???
She is not even a great dancer?
She is like an 80's Geri Halliwell, very talentless

I really started hating on her, when she started talking about how crap Mariah was, When Mariah has more talent vocally and as a producer/writer then she ever could have
Maybe she was pissed that some one stole her "Best selling female artist of all time title"

madonna succeeds at what she is. she is, by all means, a performance artist. the whole idea of "madonna" is a big game. everytime we see an interview, we are watching a performance. everytime we watch a video, we see a performance. when we read an interview or listen to her cd, we are checking out her performance. she has made a living, and a mark in the music business, by performing as "herself". but "herself" is an image she creates and destroys and rebuilds on a regular basis. that is haard work, i'm sure. a painter creates images on a canvas that speak to people. that painter is not his/her work...just the creator of that work. madonna is not her work...just the creator of it. that is the genius behind her. she's not a music artist. she uses that particular medium to perform. but she also uses other mediums as well. its all part of the image. and that is what we buy when we buy a madonna product. and that's alright!

Oddly enough, I grabbed the Bedtime STories casette this morning as I was heading to work and was totally enjoying it! I too hated it for years, and now I really enjoy it. I don't think it's her best but sometimes I'm in the mood for it and it's PERFECT.
