Uncle Jamm Wants You... P-Funk's worst?

Okay, it starts out with one okay and then a great song. But the rest of the album? Uncle Jamm? Holly Wants To Go To California? Don't get me wrong I love P-Funk and have every Funkadelic album, but this one I'm just not feeling. Any opinions?

I have this CD,but it's not one of my favorites.Of course,I love "(not just) Knee Deep" but the other songs are nothing to write home about, imo. You should check out Funkadelic's 1978 album 'One Nation Under A Groove'.

Hard to tell, there are so many awful P-funk albums!

Actually appart from Maggot Brain which I love, all other albums seem to have 2 to 3 good tracks, never much more (that's why I love the 2 double-cd best-of)... Even 2 P-funk fans among my friends actually agree with that!

i read a review of this lp back in the day, and they said "how good can it be? the whole band is pictured on ROLLERSKATES on the inside!" lol. also saw a review that said that if you were high, "(not just) knee deep" feels like it goes on for 5 hours!

on the real though... i have a soft spot in my heart for "holly wants to go to california", just because, well... just because it's so bad smile . i love it when george's voice cracks near the end of that one... too funny.

Isn't 'Connections and Disconnections' supposed to be their worst?

Has anybody heard this? It isn't on CD sad ...or maybe "smile"

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thinks this! LOL...I really love P-Funk but to be honest,I can never get through an entire album by Funkadelic or Parliament.Sometimes, there are some interesting ideas, but more often than not,it all just sounds like unfocused noise.

As with most albums you have to be on the same drug the artist was when creating it. I have a feeling after an 8 ball and a ounce of weed you guys could totally vibe with all of the p-funk albums and the funkadelic stuff I would suggest weed and hallucinogen's. Now for that dope dogs album I would say after the first track you need a couple hits of crack. Not that I would have any first hand knowledge of this, it's just a hunch. whistling

That's not really the real Funkadelic iirc, it's a number of ex-P-funkers without key figures like GC, Hampton, Bernie, Shider or Hazel. As I understand, Clinton couldn't stop them from using the name. It's not generally considered a real Funkadelic album.

DavidEye, we may not agree on Madonna, but glad to see that we share the view that P-funk is sometimes "unfocused".

The real problem is, I think, that George and co are fairly bad composers. Take out the (great) hits, and you are left with albums that have no variety, where harmonies are often pretty ugly and where the slow jams are almost always very weak.

Quite frankly, seeing george Clinton being rated higher than Prince by most young R&B/hip-hop fans (simply because he has collaborated with Snoop, Dre...) remains puzzling to me.

But once again, Maggot Brain is a realy great, focused, album, and best-ofs and -some- live stuff are must-haves.

I absolutely love the title track. It's one of the funkiest things they ever did, there's so much going on in that track. I like "Holly wants to go to california" as someone else said just because it's so bad, it's good. smile

Not just knee deep is good too.

So, that makes for half the album... I won't even comment on the other half.

Yeah, the only good cut on Uncle Jam.. is Knee Deep, my favorite funk song going as far back as I care to remember. One Nation Under A Groove is one of my favorite albums.

I think what was important about George and Co was not so much being on the same drug, but the time in which Parliament (and it's incarnations) were at the height of their power, it was an intersting time, George believed that the Power of Funky music should consume people, and the whole Mothership thing came out when all those movies about ET's were running high too... also politically George was interesting in terms of what he was saying... this is a longer discussion than I would go into here but there are some good books on the subject...

UNCLE JAM falls into a similar spot of the PFUNK discography as a lot of Prince's 90s work. Prince put out more volume, but I skip over a lot of those cds. Indeed UJWY is probably my least favorite session, where I skip around a lot if I even cue the disc! All that other stuff is as vintage as Prince's best stuff.

You just don't know how knee-slapping funny it is to hear Prince fans dog out Clinton & da Mobb as "horrible songwriters". Why the only thing funnier was hearing PFUNK fans say how unfunky PRINCE has been since pulling back on The Black Album!!

Being a fan of both, I think I'm pretty objective. As long as GC and Prince keep their thang going. I'm cool

In it's entirety? I think it should have been cut to 4 or 5 minutes. Goes on much too long.

Sure any good PFUNK is better with drugs, but I was banging my ass off to DOPE DOGS with a big of hit of NOTHING! That's some real hardcore funk. High, stoned or sober, that's the way I want my funk.

Funkentelechy, Clones, Mothership Connection, Motorbooty affair, Earth Tour, Let's Take it to the Stage, Hardcore Jollies, Standing on the Verge, One Nation and the first three Bootsy's Rubber Band albums are imho all great albums.
