Cree Summer "Street Faërie"

Did anyone get this album? What did you think of it? Also, what's the news on her? Any upcoming projects?

Wow! I was just considering starting a thread on her and this album today!

Coool.

Great album, very positive vibe, humanistic, soulful, rocking, funky!

A must, I recommend buying it new.

Check out her site!

http://www.creesummer.com/

The album came out in '99 and was fresh and really had that LA black rock sound. I think it was better than all that Neo Soul stuff coming out at the same time.

Lenny Kravitz duets with her on a song, "Mean Sleep" which is really cool. He also produced most of it, Cree's tight with Lisa Bonet, so that's why she was hooked up with Lenny.

I recorded a performance of her on Leno at the time of the release, I was floored. She has a great powerful voice that's easily distinguishable and she rocked the house on that show! Loved it! Basically, she's great LIVE!

Her album and Prince's Rave were on me player that year over and over so I got some nice memories of it.

The website is kind of abandoned, Epic hasn't fixed it, that's messed up. She had some great photos of herself on there performing, the videos up though.

She also did the female voice on that animated movie about underwater adventures or something, forgot, cute voice.

I hated this album after I bought it. Played it a few times and it hasn't been off my shelf since. Might be time to give it another listen.

Is she the voice of She Hulk? My b/f was watching The Incredible Hulk and She Hulk the other day, and I kept saying, "she sounds like Cree Summer." She's "Penny" on inspector gadget and has done other cartoons; her cartoon voice is pretty distinct. Don't know what her singing voice is like, though.

Thanks for responding. My favorite tracks on Street Faërie are "Mean Sleep" and "Curious White Boy" (the lyrics are crazy on that track). I hope she makes another album.

OMG I just went to her website www.creesummer.com and it is atrocious! I am a web designer and it is a complete slap in the face to her. The XHTML source coding is all out of wack (not to mention exposed and sloppy) and half of the images are inoperable. Whoever designed that site should be slapped.

Yep. The site should be slapped. So should Cree for fucking Lenny and screwing up his marriage, but I digress. I didn't care much for this CD. Lenny did an okay job. Mediocre as usual.

The site worked back in 99. I think Epic records just let it go and it got all wacked.

It was cooler though, had great photos and was being updated all the time with performance photos and stuff.

Great thread! I purchased this album back in '99, and I remember being immediately blown away. The album (produced by Lenny Kravitz) is actually superior to all of Kravitz' solo releases. I honestly believe it was the best project released in 1999, and it remains one of my favorite CDs to this day.

I saw her in '99 on a second stage at a Black Crowes/Lenny Kravitz concert. I thought she gave the best performance of the night.

Went to buy her CD the next day and was somewhat disappointed. It is better than average but her live show was much better. Basically, it was a LK CD with her voice.

Speaking of Lisa Bonet, whatever happened to her? I know she changed her name but damn, she dropped out of the public eye. Was she blacklisted? Didn't enjoy showbusiness? That's messed up that she didn't show for the Cosby Show reunion special. What's a Cosby Show/Huxtable reunion without DENISE! razz

Wow! I am really surprised about this thread. I thought that maybe I am the only one on this planet to know her album.
I think that the most remarkable thing is the sound of the album -> excellent.
Also the album deserved more attention, because it was very good. However the LK stamp is very easy to detect.

I saw her performing in Cologne before LK hit the stage. The performance of her was amazing. Before the show they had given promo tapes of the album, and I bought it straight away. But since then she seemed to be disappeared. Sad, though.

she says she dropped out on purpose. she and cosby never got along so i guess she didn't want to be a hypocrite and come on the reunion. she works with at risk kids now, practices yoga and looks 60years old

It seems that all the artists I love go to Europe and bless them with all the live performances before they hit the states. sigh

Yeah, I heard about that, too. I heard she was dropped from "A Different World" because she was showing up late to tapings and it all went downhill after Angel Heart. Something similiar happened to the actor that played "Cockroach" on the show. He didn't respect Bill's wishes and was let go. Cosby told Cockroach to cut his hair and the actor refused so Cosby fired him. I love the Cosby Show and all its spinoffs! Whoa, I'm just going off-topic in this thread, eh. LOL

OMFG!
I don't have the full album, but I do have a four song promo cd from sony that contains "falling" "deliciously down" "revelation sunshine" and "mean sleep" which are all incredible songs. I'd not say it eclipses Kravitz's solo work but it's on an equal with his album "circus". Great stuff and I wish I could find the full length.

On a side note, I've been a fan of kravitz's since '89. NOW, you'd think he's know better than to let Warners distro his new label Roxie Records, but that's what's happening. I truly mean this when I say it - GOOD FUCKING LUCK.
Keep your headphones on.

UPDATE:

I bought the album and I am VERY impressed. Her vocals are amazing and they compliment Lenny's production so well. My favorite tracks are...

Deliciously Down
Fall
Life Goes On
Angry Boy
Revelation Sunshine
Miss Moon
Curious White Boy
Mean Sleep
...OK, basically the entire album.

This is the kind of album you can press play at track one and just enjoy the journey. Good highway/freeway record. I recommend it. Thanks to everybody who gave me info on it.

I love this album!! Unfortunately Sony didn't promote her that well and the album got lost in the shuffle. Too bad Sony dropped her. That's most likely the reason why some of the links on the site no longer work. Hopefully she'll put something new out soon.
