Let's discuss...your record collection!

The best thing about this Non-Prince forum is discovering
all of the different artists and songs everybody in this
community likes. we all know we dig prince...but i really
love the variety (and good musical tastes) we all seem to have.

so with that in mind here's some questions about our record
collections.

1.Out of your personal collection what styles of music is
representive the most?
(you rank them from most to least)

for example here's mine...
1.r & b 2.reggae 3. doo-wop 4.rock-pop 5.jazz 6.blues
7.gospel 8.disco 9.classical

2.what 45's do you have that you will always play (until they
throw dirt on ya! smile)
3.what albums-cds are your most treasured ones?

4. which are your favorite albums covers from the ones you
have?

i didn't answer questions 2-4...because i want to see what
everybody else says first.

charles

this should be fascinating...we got some people on the org with some taste, for sho'!

Oh my, these are waaay too many ?uestions:

1.Jazz-A
RnB-B
Doo Wop-C
Rock-D
Blues-E

2.Lady In Satin-Billie Holiday

3.Prince non-released stuff and the import CDs by other artists(Since we Americans are too damn unlucky when it comes 2 IMPORT music which I think is the best). I also have some out-of-print stuff that I found in the "used market" like Tina Turner's 78 "Rough" now, you won't find this anywhere. I also have a bootleg of Millie Jackson doing a gig back in 79 in some joint in Harlem,,this is a tight record.

4.Wow alot,,,mostly Jazz records. Hell, Jazz records got the VERY best covers EVER. 70's Soul/Funk comes 2 mind as a 2nd.

dansa...some of the wildest comedy records ever made were
the ones my parents's generation had...by Redd Foxx.
(yep ole fred sanford himself) man...were they dirty!
and funny as hell. richard pryor had some that would make most of today's comediannes blush!
which comedy ones do you have?

2.what 45's do you have that you will always play (until they throw dirt on ya! smile)

the 12 inch of sexy dancer? that's one i don;t have!
good one. supposedly there's an import 12 inch of
why you wanna treat me so bad with some extra guitar
soloing by prince & dez...i don't have this one...but i'd
love to!

in my 45 collection...the ones i treasure most by prince &
his mafia are: prince's 12 inch of let's work...gotta stop
messin' about (the pic sleeve is BAD. they all look so
strange and hip at the same time (dansa...i bet you can find
this one in your endless photo collection, huh?)

jesse's free world-be yo man 12 inch single (loves dat cover) jesse's CRAZAy (with ole sly on there)
prince's kiss'alexa le paris (i think is the b-side...or is that mountains? help me somebody i can't remember!

p's photo of wendy & lisa is really nice.

george & louis. those boys were fonky!

i'm trying to recall what phil's cover was...
cool picks!

oh yeah one of my favorite covers in my collection just happens to be yo fave prince album...DIRTY Mind!

when i saw this one originally i said...the boy done lost his friggin' mind!
little did i know he was just getting warmed up!
(sign of the times 45 sleeve...the one with cat holding his

I don't have any 45's no mo'...

3.what albums-cds are your most treasured ones?

They're all equally treasured for different reasons...some speak to different aspects of me, different things/phases I was going thru--and still am...

If I had to pick one, though...I'd say it would be a CD that Freespirit made for me, the first one she made for me in fact... rose...there's a lot connected with it emotionally...heart

4. which are your favorite albums covers from the ones you
have?

Sign O' The Times has always been a favorite...no text, just Prince's fucked-out studio complete with instruments, and Prince blurry and barely in the shot...it always looked like Prince just got thru creating this aural masterpiece, and was walking away from just having put down his guitar...it's perfection.

1.Out of your personal collection what styles of music is
representive the most?
(you rank them from most to least)
This is tough and my collection is in no kind of order...just tore up, back, and over, scattered in boxes.
So I might have to correct it later on, but I think in order:

A) pop
B) R&B (classic & neo-soul)
C) funk and disco (think it's really close)
D) classic and modern rock
E) soundtracks
F) trance-like mood and instrumental style
G) jazz, gospel, and alternative are about the same

2.what 45's do you have that you will always play (until they
throw dirt on ya! smile)

I don't play 45's anymore. Think the last time was sometime last year.

3.what albums-cds are your most treasured ones?

Mostly the greatest hits and box sets which easily totals over 150.

4. which are your favorite albums covers from the ones you
have?
Hmmm...maybe Duran Duran's "Seven and the Ragged Tiger," and The Beatles "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band," oh include Stevie Wonder's "Innervision" but beyond that, I don't really trip over album covers.

I love this board. Learn so much from all you guys. And love the diversity of musical interests. Youngca rocks!!!

oh gee Dee...i don't know what to say! (blush) well you ROCK,too!

you bring up a interesting point. most music fans don't pay
that much attention to albums graphics on covers! which is
probably the norm. i guess the reason i always have is cuz
i've always been into Art and Photgraphy ..i mean i got started early drooling over the old picture sleeve 45's my
dad and older sister had. something about those ancient
picture sleeve got to me. "the earliest 2 that stick out in my
young mind were GARy Bonds "quarter to 3" and ritchie valens
'1959" "la bamba & donna.

back in the 60's (thanks to the beatles mostly) a lot of people got off on record covers. they became as importatant
as the music inside the sleeves!

but the 50's jazz album covers (u know what i'm saying BRO915 & harlepolis!...) were da bomb!

a few more records that i should add :

cool album covers (this is for my man david eye!)
marvin's "what's going on"

(i don't have this one but i seen it in a record album book..THe Marvelettes debut album:please mr. postman...it has
all 5 original memebers at the top looking down on a drawing
of a postman! pretty slick for a motown cover)
prince:sign o the times & controversy

all of the FUnkadelic covers. every one is an experience!

45 singles i should have mentioned:
impressions: gyspy woman
king floyd;groove me
jerry butler:need to belong
jackson 5:the love you save
tom tom club:genius of love
sarah vaughn:broken hearted melody
donald jenkins & delighters:elephant walk
cods:michael the lover
jackson 5 :big boy (their first local pre-motown song circa
1968...mj was already great.
madison time: ray bryant combo (thank you pops...this cut was in a key scene in the movie HAIRSPRay...go rickie lake!)
anyway those are the ones i neglected!
