Absolutely fucking mind blowing. But I'm still recovering. I'll give you and everyone else a full report once I'm up and running again. It was well worth the trip, time and money though. That's all for now. smile

yet I find myself playing it more and more, and liking it more and more upon each listen...

yeah, we all know that held up against a 'classic' bOwie album, it doesnt 'shine'
- but I still think this is a real gem and I think its really over-looked...thoughts?

Sentiments I agree with
below..

I agree with you... the problem is that I don't think Hours is by any means a classic(as u point out)
...it is not, however, the evil black sheep of bowie's post 93 work that some people make it out to be.

I think Hours suffers greatly from its place in Bowie's cannon of albums. It came after Buddha, Outside and Earthling - albums that re-established DB's rep as a avant-garde rocker, albums that made David Bowie himself again. Due to this, many fans, new and old alike poured scorn on what they saw as Bowie returning to the mainstream - it didn't help that he split up with Gabrels (some sort of saint to many) and returned to playing his hits in a standard version around this time as well.

It's clear that hardcore fans (i.e your standard online bowie-posters) saw this album as some sort of betrayal at worst, a big dissapointment at best - the whole game tie-in thing didn't help.

If Hours had come before Outside and after BTWN it would probably be regarded much more highly...without doubt I believe.

Hours was largely responsible for the critical/commercial resurrection Heathen brought about - it certainly sold more units Europe-wide than either Outside or Earthling and no-one made it a point of ridicule, unlike with previous releases.

Now I'm not saying Hours is better than Outside or Earthling, I personally think it's weaker - but loads of non-hardcore fans bought it and were happy then bought Heathen and no doubt will buy Reality.

Hours will not go down as a great album by any means but as a useful stepping stone in his career.

Thanx 4 the info/opinion Lodger, was interesting 2 read. 4 me, HeatheN missed the mark 4 me

but then again, Hours did the same at 1st - as did a certain 'ATWIAD' by Prince - all the very best album s take time 2 digest I think - u have 2 work with it and go with 'em...

Parting shot:
U know how he got the inspiration 4 'Outside' from many of the neo performance artists of the nineties etc?

One of my very best friends is this guy:

a certain Mr Ron Athey! (One of the artists he mentioned in the liner notes/story of Outside, and whom he took a great interest in during the early nineties - he invited Ron 2 his 50th bash too...

Probably not, He's not one of those 'star-struck' types.
He's directed videos 4 the Stones, knew Madonna back n the day,
took J.T Leroy under his wing, done that whole 'Hollywierd' scene etc etc...

THE SHOW KICKED ASS!!!

and i wasn't looking forward to the prospect of it consisting of a lot of new songs. after seeing the show, though, that may have actually been the best part.
