"Can't Take That Away from Me" with the fake tear? It's pure pop fluff. I will admit that I don't know all of Mariah's catalogue. If she had anything decent to say, she surely didn't promote it. Madonna, on the other hand, has many, many singles with a lot of substance. See DavidEye's list for reference. If Mariah Carey will be remembered, it will be for being a precocious singer who thought she was a diva.

Madonna...what is there to say that hasn't already been said. Like it or not she is here to stay. Influential, multi-facited,actress, singer, songwriter, producer, model, ceo, author...the titles are endless. Comparing Madonna and Mariah Carey is like black and white. Both female , both entertainers. It ends there. Mariah has an 8 octave range. But wasn't her mother an opera singer? However lately, seems like she's struggling to hit those high notes. I love Mariah, don't get me wrong. But 'deep meaningful lyrics'??? I've wept harder at HALLMARK commercials! The skank image is tired, yet part of her appeal I guess. Madonna has tackled more issues than another pop artist or artist period. Videos: Mariah shows only one side of her face, under soft lights, always dancing (I use that loosely), as if she's in a dream. "Dreamlover","Butterfly","Honey","Fantasy"...nice titles. If you're 15 years old!!! Get out of your mum's jewelry box and live a little. An artist struggles, suffers, creates from there pain and life experiences. Everyone has there own opinions...true. But to say Madonna is not influencial or has no talent is pure rubbish! Madonna hasn't broke down because of the pressures, and boo hoo hoo-ing all over. Perhaps in private, but who knows. She overcomes each and every obstacle that's thrown her way, and resurfaces shining brighter than before. Mariah can be thrown into the Whitney's, Celine's, etc... But who can you compare Madonna with? I mean as far as all those so called "DIVAS" from th 80's up until now. This has nothing to do with age. I wasn't around during Billie Holliday's time or Maria Callas' days. But I respect understad, and appreciate their influences. And own some of their music.
Anyway...I'm just rambling... In My Opinion No one has, will, or ever could touch Madonna's talent and influence. She is a force of nature. When there are courses in colleges about Mariah's influences not only in pop music but in society as a whole. Then I will consider, consider giving her some credit. I like her, yes. But MADONNA will forever reign surpreme. BTW..I have my own mind, and not easily influenced. I chose to love her all on my own.

p.s. I do own all of Mariah's albums and most of her cd singles.

If you argue that it does, Madonna grew up near Detroit. Kylie is brilliant. This is just a matter of taste. Back to the point at hand. Your arguments are faulty. DavidEye pointed out earlier that you switched positions on success- initially arguing that Mariah was successful, then undermining your own argument by saying that success has nothing to do with talent. You also implied that Madonna does not sing about anything deep because of the "soy latte" line in "American Life," which, consequently, is a very deep song. Playing by your rules, then, who the hell would get anything out of an album called "Charmbracelet?" "Glitter?" "Butterfly?" "Rainbow?" "Music Box?" Sounds like Mariah is appealing to 8 year old girls only. Better call her "Rainbow Brite."

Madonna a great singer, actress and model
you having a laugh Mariah writes her own music unlike Whitney and Celine if you have listened to her albums you would know she talks about lots of different issues Calling her a hoochie? She has never posed numde, unlike Madonna, who then tries and calls it art

NO ABOUT SUCCESS AND TALENT Mariah wins on all accounts she is more succesfull and talented Her success has nothing to do with how talented she is but that's the icing on the cake taht she has sold more records then Madonna

Mariah's visual presentation is just that, visual candy it's not all she's about, and if listened to her music you would know that but since your into Madonna amd Kylie, you must been into the vocally challanged club and a real singer like Mariah must go over your head

but to say she is a better artist then Mariah is a joke by the way the title of Rainbow has to with racism and different colours living together as one How is this less important or meaningfull then a madonna album? the title Music Box holds the same meaning behind Madonna's Music album title . I saw Madonna on that Gap commercial with Missy Elliot and I was embarassed for her. It's not like she was using one of her new shit songs, why did she have to do a classic? She is a washed up joke now in my opinion. I thought American Life was horrible. I listened to some of the songs with my friend (thank you internet) and we were in hysterics, especially during the rapping bits. The songs have absolutely no hooks whatsoever. Personally . I think we are all Boring with No Lives cause all we do is talk about Prince,Criticize and Gossip. I need a Horny Man is what I Need and probably so do most of yas. We are Sexually Frustrated what we R... Amen..!!! - zelaire

And what does Kylie have to do with anything? Agreed. This thread turned into a laughingstock pretty quickly! Kylie came up because it was implied that Mariah was the first female pop singer to employ rappers in '95, and Kylie was one of many female pop stars mentioned to utilize rappers before '95.
