I just bought The Spinners 3-CD box set "The Chrome Collection" Went CD shopping this weekend and bought a ton of CDs,including a new 3-CD box set from The Spinners. The Spinners are one of the greatest R&B groups of all-time,and in the 70s,they scored one hit after another.Compiled by Rhino Records/Atlantic,this amazing box set has 62 songs spread across 3 CDs.I haven't had the chance to listen to it yet,but this is what it contains...
"The Spinners: The Chrome Collection" DISC 1 (1961-1974)--- "That's What Girls Are Made For" "I'll Always Love You" "Truly Yours" "What More Could A Boy Ask For?" "Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music (1973 remix)" "It's A Shame" "We'll Have It Made" "(Oh Lord) I Wish I Could Sleep" "Just Can't Get You Out Of My Mind" "Just You And Me Baby" "Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You" "I Could Never (Repay Your Love)" "I'll Be Around" "One Of A Kind (Love Affair)" "We Belong Together" "Ghetto Child" "How Could I Let You Get Away" "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" "Love Has Gone Away" "Love Don't Love Nobody" "I'm Coming Home" DISC 2 (1974-1977) "Since I Been Gone" "He'll Never Love You Like I Do" "Mighty Love" "There's No One Like You" "I've Got To Make It On My Own" "Living A Little,Laughing A Little" "Sadie" "Then Came You" with Dionne Warwick "Sitting On Top Of The World" "I Don't Want To Lose You" "Love Or Leave" "You Made A Promise To Me" "They Just Can't Stop It (Games People Play)" "Toni My Love" "The Rubberband Man" "Now That We're Together" "Wake Up Susan" "Me And My Music" "You're Throwing A Good Love Away" "Painted Magic" DISC 3 (1977-1989) "Heaven On Earth (So Fine)" "Back In The Arms Of Love" "(Love Is) One Step Away" "Easy Come,Easy Go" "If You Wanna Do A Dance (All Night)" "Are You Ready For Love" "A Plain And Simple Love Song" "Body Language" "Working My Way Back To You/Forgive Me Girl" "Cupid/I've Loved You For A Long Time" "I Just Want To Fall In Love" "Now That You're Mine Again" "Yesterday Once More/Nothing Remains The Same" "Long Live Soul Music" "You Go Your Way(I'll Go Mine)" "Love Conncection (Raise The Window Down)" "Never Thought I'd Fall in Love" "Magic In The Moonlight" "Funny How Time Slips Away" "Right Or Wrong" "Memories Of Allison" Looks like all the hits are accounted for,and there seems to be alot of key album tracks and rarities. One disappointment: their 1976 hit "The Rubberband Man" is presented in it's single version.Nevertheless,I can't wait to finally get into this set. My favorite Spinners song is "Games People Play (They Just Can't Stop It)" from 1975.I just never get tired of this song. And the full-length album version is a must-have.

One of my favorite groups. That Pick Of The Litter{1975} album was pretty good. I also love "I Don't Want To Lose You", Sweet Child Of Mine and "You Made A Promise To Me" from this album.

You know,I'm thinking about going back and getting some of the individual albums.I want more than just the "hits".'Pick Of The Litter' is probably where I'm gonna start, since it contains my favorite Spinners song. They also have a Live album from 1974 that i'm really intertested in.

I think my favorite Spinners song is "Mighty Love". Ten City's "That's the Way Love Is" reminds me of it. I can hardly think of one without thinking of the other. (I'd love for Steve "Silk" Hurley to mix the two!
They've got plenty of other hits that I like. I think I even have a greatest hits comp. btw, didn't Phillipe Wynne join Parliament for a brief period?

I love you too" lol | |

I've got a corny Spinners moment. Can't remember if Wynne had already left but it was their performance of "Rubber Band Man". Those cats actually took out large rubber bands and did some funky rubberband dance. Anyone else remember seeing this? (It might've been on American Bandstand.)

Wanna hear some Spinners trivia?...
***When Dionne Warwick recorded the song "Then Came You" with the Spinners in 1974,she absolutely hated the song. The producer Thom Bell convinced her that it would go to Number One and it did. ***When the guys were recording the song "Sadie" in 1974,they all broke down in tears. It's a very beautiful, emotional song. ***The guys experienced a slight scandal in 1973.When listeners heard their single "One Of A Kind (Love Affair)" on the radio, they thought they heard lead singer Philippe Wynne singing "makes you wanna love her...you just gotta fuck her, yeah".The single version was quickly edited, but the original album version was left untouched.Pull out the album and judge for yourself. It appears during the final chorus after the breakdown.

Like I said before I love the Spinners. Growing up in the 70's I used to love to do their dance steps. These guys knew how to put on a show.
I remember in 1975, Soul Train dedicated a whole show to them. They performed 4 songs on that episode. They peformed Sadie, Love Don't Love Nobody{that was the last song they performed}, plus they performed one of my all time favorites...Games People Play. They really pull out all of the stops on that performance, acting out the lyrics of the song. co-lead singer Henry Fambrough sung the female vocal part of that song. It was funny. That was a great episode{but then again, all of the Soul Train episodes were good in the 70's}. You can't go wrong with the first 4 or 5 Spinners records of the 70's. Spinners that album was like a greatest hits album almost, Mighty Love is a stone cold classic and Pick Of The Litter is great too. These guys with Thom Bell producing, could do no wrong in the early and mid 70's. And the long version of "The Rubberband Man" is classic. The song pays tribute to Bootsy.

you mean to tell me it its not the original b-side mix to its a shame? I'm finally listening to the box set and the liner notes explain the story behind the 1973 remix. This song is originally from their Motown days and as you pointed out,it was the B-side to their 1970 hit "It's A Shame" (the only real hit from their Motown days).By 1973,The Spinners were riding high at Atlantic and they were one of the hottest R&B groups on the charts. To capitalize on their newfound success and popularity,Motown hastily re-mixed the old track "Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music" and issued it on a compilation LP 'The Best Of The Spinners'.
