I will admit that I am not what you would call a true reggae fan, but I do own tons of Bob Marley and Pete Tosh music. I know by admitting this that it definitely "dates" me, but I love both of these guys and I still enjoy listening to their music even after all these years.

Oh yeah and Bob Marley mon! well said. the Island Records box set 'The History of JAmaican Music 1958-1993 is an excellent start for anyone who has the money and wants a good primer for jamaican music. everyone sinisterp mentioned is a must get for someone who wishes to "really' get into jamaican music. here's a few people that i highly reccommend a novice reggae fan search the wrecka stow bins on: lady saw: she's sort of the jamaican version of millie jackson...lewd lyrics...catchy rhymes, pretty good singer.. for people who were into patra in the 90's...ms. saw is way better! half pint: "the pint" does ragga well...sings his ass off.. "greetings from the box set sinisterp mentioned is a good indication of Hp's abilities shabby ranks...very rude mon. but was he popular for a while here in the states! check him out. yellowman: oh MAn! this dude is even raunchier than shabba. of of my fave songs by him is a version of "i'm getting married in the morning". cocoa tea:superb singer. nuff said. now for the people U must get. (these folk go back a long ways..but when i really PLAY reggae these people are IT! of course Bob marley & wailers: catch a fire, burnin' rastaman revolution,exodus,uprising...the box-set songs of freedom...live at studio one (early to mid 60's bob when he was doing R & b ska stuff ...polcie fans this is the real deal...stuff sting checked out b4 he and the boys did their ska rock stuff) greogry issacs: (the jamaican marving gaye) the cool ruler, whom i've seen twice when he came to chicago is cool as cool can get...superb singer of love songs: best songs, cool down the pace, night nurse, sad to say you're leaving, substitute, can i change your mind ( a nice version of the tyrone davis 7o's hit ) rumours, front door any albums by this guy is worth it. these early r& b reggae vocal groups: the heptones, melodians, the gaylads (the names funny...but not their singing) the paragons(they did the original tide is high that blondie had a hit with) the mighty diamonds (right time is a great song and album!) ken boothe (think of sam cooke & wilson pickett) big youth keith slim smith and the uniques: slim is one of my all-time favorites...if you love curtis mayfield-this dude sings just like him...with a stronger gospel edge. slim does incredible versions of smokey, temptations, curtis, tunes. a must to get. marcia griffiths (sang with marley ) and last but not least derrick harriott: another great singer...does smokey, tempts, stylistics,chi-lites songs...singer of superb technique. ok...these people U should check into. I kid you not! rock on mon. murder style!
