I am totally diggin the VH-1 show. It's bringing up a lot of memories that I totally forgot about.

Shrinky Dinks?

Leisure Suits (my Dad had one...disbelief)

The Electric Company and Zoom!

Lite Brite & Weeble Wobbles (which became wepons in my house)

H R Huffnstuff or whatever the name of that weird ass show was.

Kick ass show!

Easy Bake ovens

Baby Alive

Schoolhouse Rock

"Deep Throat" wink

My sister had an Easy Bake Oven...what the hell was that shit that made the cakes...whatever it was...it was AWESOME. I was rolling last night when that hot blondie said the same thing.

Baby Alive was just plain disgusting.

I learned more from Schoolhouse Rock than anything in school.

I never knew about Deep Throat until I was in jr high...by that time it was the 80s. One thing about that movie...the actresses and actors where butt ugly!

A few other tidbits:
All in the Family

The Waltons (I HATED that show but my parents made us watch it)

Sonny & Cher

Hee Haw (again one of my Dads faves disbelief)

I caught all of '71 and some of '72. For '71 they showed clips from Soul Train. There's a scene of this guy I met years ago, Tyrone Proctor, going down the ST Line lookin' kinda pimped out in an all white suit and matching ankle-length coat.

Some of the celebrity quips are hilarious. The Tom Jones segment was a trip. Everyone remember his funky moves, swiveling hips, and tight ass pants. Someone said: "Tom Jones had a "package" that even FedEx couldn't deliver." lol

Observations about why Scooby Doo and Shaggy were always eating and the Alice in Wonderland weirdness of HR Puff-n- Stuff implied drug usage. Of the latter Rob Zombie said: "Well it was called "Puff" and "Stuff." smile Good Call! biggrin

I liked the Baby Alive reference, 'cept I was surprised no one mentioned how there were reports that the doll developed worms if it wasn't cleaned thoroughly. My little sister had one, but her's never got worms.

I've been glued to the tv since it's been on. I missed half of 1972 (my birth year), but I'll catch it in numerous reruns.

**My message to those hoping to see lots of coverage of their favorite artists or shows, don't have high hopes, then you won't be as disappointed. Just be happy if they happen to get mentioned.**

The realization has finally sunk in that the whole decade was nothing but about sex. Yet it was so different as a child. You were young and naieve and it was subliminal for the most part. If it wasn't about that, then it was about drugs.

Highlights/ Lowlights:
Charmin commercial, oh so short but Mr. Whipple's eyes said it all..."Don't squeeze the Charmin."

No, not everybody can or should wear hotpants.

I still can't watch The Exorcist, even if it's snippets.

Tom Jones is WAYYY hotter than Neil Diamond could ever be. Altho "What's New Pussycat" makes me cringe. *My mom likes him alot.*

Sanford & Son is still the bomb! You can still find the show on TV Land.

I hardly remember Zoom, but loved The Electric Company "Hey You Guys"! and Sesame Street.

SchoolHouse Rock rules 4-ever!!! I have the tapes.

Still don't get "Stairway to Heaven," altho I've tried.

I miss the old Soul Train. The dance line was always classic. Scary clothes and dance moves tho. Where is Don these days anyways?

Can we agree that the commentary/reactions/jokes of guest celebs make the show as well?

Leif Garrett looks like he doesn't belong in the rollerskating segments. They should have used Barry Williams.

Lowlights:
Not being spoiled like I was supposed to since I was an only child. Besides the view master, I didn't have any of the crazy looking dolls or an easy bake oven, altho I do remember wanting one. I should just go out and buy myself one now. Maybe I would have learned how to cook if I had that when I was younger. haha!

For those who can't get into the show, in October Vh1 is doing "I Love the 80's Strikes Back."

More of my 2 cents as the week continues. I should take notes next time. haha!
"Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

Re: The hotpants segment, I thought to myself: "Didn't folks have cellulite back then?"

Re: Zoom, I was a BIG fan of the show. I remember writting in a few times and receiving cards that had a cast member's picture and short bio on it. I liked Nancy. And Joe was cute; I think Maura had a crush on him. I learned to speak Ubby Dubby, what a S.A.S.E. (self-addressed stamped envelope) was watching that show! I still remember the zipcode: 0-2-1-3-4.

I haven't read all the posts in this thread, but I have an immediate pet peeve: when they get into year 1975 they show EW&F and play ... "Boogie Wonderland" ... forget the fact that I dislike the song, but the fact that they play it like it was released in 1975 annoys me. I'm methodical and picky when it comes to dates, and VH1 shouldn't confuse the neophytes out there with their carelessness.

Carry on.

Agreed.Another thing that bugs me is when they play songs from the 80s.There was one segment where they actually played a snippet of The Time's 1984 song "Jungle Love"! Another time, they played a small part of Carl Carlton's 1981 hit "She's A Bad Mama Jama"!! Someone needs to remind them that this is a SEVENTIES SPECIAL...lol...

I graduaded in 1981, so grew up in the 70s. Why do I love the 70s?

- Bee Gees
- Dr. J (started his career in my home town)
- Jaws
- Star Wars
- Apple Computer - my first computer was an Apple ][ and now I make my living developing software on a Macintosh
- when you listend to the radio, you could tell when one song stopped and the next started because they actually sounded different. Artists from all styles would get played on top 40 radio.

Exactly. Listening to the radio in the 70s was so much fun.The stations were very diverse. That's part of the reason I like so many different artists, everyone from Barry Manilow to Earth Wind and Fire.

Good call on "Bad Mama Jama!" Guess if the show is gonna have anachronisms, they should at least be within the same era if not the same year.

I grew up in (Do or Die) Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn in the 70's and I remember A LOT of the stuff VH1 is focusing on. They'd have to do an entirely different series to air the omissions. Maybe BET could do their version of "I Love the 70s".

Yeah, I agree with all the statements regarding playing songs in the 80's on a 70's show.

But that Hong Kong Phooey sure took me back. I forgot about that cartoon. I wouldn't miss on a Saturday morning growing up...And I had a cousin who had that 8-ball toy.

I was surprise to see them doing a segment on Pam Grier/Foxy Brown.

Watching the VH1 show, I'm wondering if the celebrities get a chance to watch old photage? I mean, I completely forgot that "Hong Kong Fooey" transformed in a file cabinet.

Hey, but what I do remember is that the late Scatman Crouthers (sp) was the voice of that character. smile

Did they do anything on the J5 cartoon series yet? You can't talk about the '70s and NOT mention this!

That dude works my last nerve. He tries too hard to be funny and just comes across as the nerdy kid we all knew growing up that's trying to act cool. The other guy on those "I Love The.." shows I can't stand is that dry ass dude from the daily show. Now that I think about it, most of the people they have on there aren't very funny. I like the shows but I could use a little less "aren't I clever" comments.

Yay Connect Four was in the spotlight. One of the few games that I actually owned.

I loved Welcome Back Kotter. I try my darndest to stay up to catch it on TV Land on midnight Fridays. "Up your nose with a rubber hose"

I can't wait to see what they say about disco. That music did it for me that decade, next to maybe folkish sounding pop.

Maybe we should start an emailing campaign to encourage BET to do their own I Love the 70's.

I didn't trip off of the music used during EW&F and the years. I know Shining Star was one of the songs I heard. I'm bad with years.

Could have sworn that the mood ring started in the late 60's. I just envisioned hippies wearing something like that.

I was surprised they gave Foxy Brown/ Pam Grier some focus.

Afros afros afros...everybody wore it, but not everybody could pull it off.

Still won't go out in the water...the Jaws effect is real.

I'm enjoying it nonetheless. It is definitely airing at a perfect time when I need the escapism.

So,did you guys watch "1976" and "1977" last night? These are two of my favorite years of the 70s,so of course I really enjoyed these shows.Remember the films "Carrie","Rocky" and "Taxi Driver"? I was hoping that,on the 1977 show, they would discuss the film "The Goodbye Girl".One of my all-time favs and one of the classic films of the 70s,period.

It was fun re-living silly TV shows like "The Gong Show" and "Family Feud".

There's so much to tell,it's hard to narrow it down to only an hour for each year. For example,on the 1977 show,'Saturday Night Fever' needed to be discussed for at least half an hour...lol...

Tonight,it's 1978 and 1979 smile

Oh no the thread shuffled to page 2 without comments on 1978 and 1979.

Here's my list and comments:
1978
Superman - I think I had a crush on Christopher Reeve. He was really cute in that movie.

Incredible Hulk - Literally watched that show every week. We still have a tray, you know the kind that you put in your lap? Thought the movie would have done a disservice so I never saw it.

Superfriends - "Wonder twin powers activate"! That's all I wanted to hear.

Grease - One of my fave musicals. I watch it all the time when it airs. I have the soundtrack as well...love the theme song "Grease is the word is the word that you heard, it's got groove it's got meaning."

WKRP in Cincinatti - That was a constant must-watch back then. Loved the theme song.

"Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" - Loved the cheeky song, but Rod Stewart was sorely mistaken in the fashion dept. Scary!!!

Fantasy Island - I used to watch that after The Love Boat. I didn't know that Mr. O'Rourke controlled the fantasies. Learn something new everyday.

Simon - didn't own the game, but played everybody else's. It was fun and frustrating at the same time. Very much a slowpoke.

The Wiz - I remember watching it the first time it came out. It used to scare me at parts...just seemed more darker than the original. Loved MJ as the scarecrow. "Ease on down, ease on down the road...don't you carry nothing that might be a load, c'mon ease on down ease on down down the road."

1979

Chips - Loved those buddy cop shows...include Starsky and Hutch with that one. Must have a blonde and dark-haired pairing.

Pop Rocks - those suckers were dangerous, you never know if it was going to attack your mouth. I never mixed it with Coke tho. Did anybody ever do that?

"I Will Survive" - That's the theme of life. Timeless...

Taxi - Never ever ever ever and even to this day liked that show.

Donna Summer - Disco goddess!!!

Three's Company - Jack, Janet, and Chrissy...classic roommate comedy. I'll still watch if I remember when it comes on. Hilarious!!!

Captain Caveman - You have to say it really loud...CAPTAIN CAVEMAN!!! Otherwise that's all I remember.

The Village People - I have mixed feelings about them. I liked YMCA, In the Navy, and such, but yeah the image thing was quite scary. Easy target for teasing.

Extra fave: The Muppet Show: That show introduced me to alot of the veteran entertainers that most from the next generation would have no clue about. Now I would definitely watch that show if I could find it. Is it playing on any of those kiddie channels? "It's time to get things started on the muppet show tonight." Does anybody have fave characters?

I had great fun flashbacking on all that happened in the '70's.
