I wanna give it up for eno and bowie!

i broke out low this morning and was once again reminded why i love their collaborations so much! low is a great album and lodger is incredible! anything they've done together has just pushed music's envelope that much further. i love both artists solo work but together they just bring something so...so...indescribable to the world. and so many new wave bands in the 80's took the eno/bowie sound and built on it. i have to wonder, what would the 80's have been like without bowie and eno paving the way (and yeah, i'm aware that it was more of brian eno's vision on those records smile).

Low is one of my all-time most favorite Bowie albums EVER. On most days, if you ask me I will say it's #1 on my list.

I remember checking out the 1978 live Bowie album "Stage" from the library, because it was free and I liked "Let's Dance" a whole lot, so what the hey.

Most of the songs were from Low and "Heroes". I had NO IDEA what I was getting myself into. I was blown away. I loved it.

And then I HAD to run out and get Low. And of course, I was blown away all over again.

I think in another 5-10 years time, Low, "Heroes" and Lodger will be treated with the same reverence that Ziggy and Aladdin Sane are enjoying right now. I can't wait...!

interesting...i'll look into that. i've always assumed it was more of eno's influence since those records had very similar sounds and vibes to eno's work. are you familiar with "here come the warm jets" or "taking tiger mountain"? man, those records are wild!

Eno definitely had a strong hand in those albums, but I've never felt it overshadowed Bowie and Visconti's style. I need to catch up on some old Eno albums...I've had his stuff taped for me before, but it's been ages since I've had a listen. Ever hear the album he did with David Byrne, "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts"? It's as funky as it is bizarre!

Low is my favorite album ever. There's nothing that consistently WOWS me as much as this. "Heroes" and "Lodger" follow closely behind as my #2 and 3 Bowie albums. So yeah, I like his Berlin period.

And I have heard him talk quite a bit about his hand in the proceedings. He learned a lot from Eno, but is a bit peaved at the notion that it was him running things. Bowie has said that he put his blood and guts into those records and it shows. I think other than maybe Heathen, this period including Scary Monsters is as close we're ever gonna get to the real Bowie. There's no acting, fancy costumes or fantastic scenarios to hide behind. Just pure music, imagination and emotion. I love it.

I was at the bowienet members gig in NYC last June @the Roseland.

For the 1st time in db's career he performed not one, but two albums in their entirety from start to finish, as they are on the lps(track by track!)

Wanna know what the 1st lp he played was?

L.O.W!!!

Followed by Heathen!

I have the recording on 2cd
There is also a dvd which is only missing the 1st few songs(and it's due only to a special reason that the fotage exists at all) smile

I was there! And it was mind-blowing. People were talking about the rumors going around that he might play it and that someone had heard the rehearsal. I thought it was too good to be true. I didn't think there was a chance. But once he came onstage and started talking, I got the more overwhelming sense of excitement. When he talked about taking an album to the record company that they just didn't understand, etc. And when "Speed Of Life" and "Breaking Glass" were played back to back, I knew it was on. Talk about a religious experience. Quite possibly the best concert of my life. My instincts really paid off too, cuz I joined Bowienet just for this show. And my brother and I drove all the way to NYC from Detroit specifically for it. I had no idea it would end up so rewarding. Thank you Bowie. Infinitely.

How is the sound quality on that recording? Any chance you might wanna help me out? I've been looking for something like this.

No probs Tron - my pleasure

Yeah I flew backk to London and caught db at the 'Meltdown Festival' @the Royal Festival Hall... then I drove up North to Manchester to catch him at the Move Festival @LCCricket grounds... then for the last time at the triumphant Hammersmith Apollo gig! Phew, 4 shows(incl NYC) was the most I'd ever seen him on one tour

p.s. the Hammersmith gig was on 2nd October 2002, then on the 3rd, 4th and 5th I'm sure you knew who I saw at the same venue smile

He played 4 nights in a row? What were the setlists like for the different shows?

I heard he's rehearsing 70 songs for this upcoming tour. That should make for a lot of surprises.

"Low" is also one of my favorite Bowie albums, but who cares? ALL true Bowie fans give "Low" mad props. "Low" is the album I turn to when I'm hurting. It's just such a cathartic experience--being in pain, putting in the disc, and hearing someone who's in just as much pain as you. "Be My Wife" has SUCH a special resonance for me; the song is basically Bowie PLEADING to be loved. There's such an air of mad desperation on that track...

Ok...I gotta stop here.

And the video just kills me. You can see the pain in his eyes and just how much he had wrecked himself. But it paid off in the music. It might be my favorite video ever. I know it's cheap, but the white room just makes it so modern to me. I could easily imagine it on Post Modern MTV and 120 Minutes.

You're all forgetting the superb - and massively underated - "1.Outside", which, in my opinion, is Bowie's best album since "Scary Monsters".

No mention of "Lodger" either. That was a flawed album, sure, but it had some great moments on it.

And as you're all mostly giving it up for both Daves (Bowie and Byrne), I'd like to point out that Brian Eno has recorded some terrific albums of his own.

Check out:

Here Come The Warm Jets
Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)
Another Green World
Before & After Science
Wrong Way Up
Music For Airports
Music For Films

Happy hearing.

I don't think Lodger is flawed at all. And I think I mentioned it not being far behind LOW and "Heroes" for me. Several of his best songs are on there. It just goes unnoticed because of it's placement between more recognizable albums.

'Yassassin' from the Lodger lp was my 1st ever recollection of hearing any music(aged 3), it's extremely special to me 4 that reason alone... not withstanding it being an incredible track on an equally diverse and fascnating lp
