Maybe because Cleopatra was Greek. She's part of the Ptolemaic dynasty, and Ptolemy was from Macedonia.

Thank you. I was gonna say that. Cleopatra was not an African.
As for Whoopi playing Celia, it doesn't fit, not because of her ancestry, which she and Celia obviously shared but because of her culture. Whoopi couldn't possibly due justice to the hispanic culture of which Celia was a large part. I won't even begin talking about the singing and dancing, etc.
Finally, I suppose that I am in the minority in this country but I consider myself American before anything else-- not black, white, nor Native American, all of which I am mixed with. When we all mix together like in the "Middle East" our population will look like theirs and the current ignorance will be history. Right now there's a lot of resistance but that's where America is headed. nod

Who do they want? Jennifer Lopez? Salma Hayek? Gloria Estefan?

Jennifer is puerto rican and Salma hayek is mexician...Gloria is cuban.

there is still a difference in Latinas.

Lastly, I don't care if Cleopatra was Indian, Chinese or whatever...she wasn't a white woman and that is and was the point to why people were upset with Liz Taylor playing that role.

Egypt is a part of Africa and the people there are also dark in hue. I don't know why some love to separate it from the rest of the continent.

well hell, when it comes down to it, all of us come from the darker hued people...Africans.

I understand the cuban community being a little upset. Whoopi isn't from the hispanic culture but at least she's from the same race of people. shrug

as a dominican/afro-cuban heritage male...I don't see anything wrong with a african american woman playing the life of an afro-cuban woman...nuff said, i'd definitely pay to see the movie, I Love Whoopi and Celia!

2 Talented blk women!!!

I see no problem with a sista playing a role like that...it actually nice! So it's not an issue of ethnicity to me. But I just don't think Whoopi would be the right one, cause 1.)even with makeup/costume, she would NOT look a thing like Celia! 2.)Whoopi can't sing for shit! disbelief

Uh, Jennifer Lopez can't sing either and she played Selena. She lip synced to her songs which is most likely what Whoopi would do

I respect your opinion. But do you want your grand children thinking Celia Cruz was a black women? And BELIEVE me I love Whoopie Goldberg!

I disagree...Have you seen Alfred Molino play Diego Rivera in Frida? Awesome performance that far surpassed Selma Hayek's "mugging" performance. He deserved an Oscar nomination far more so then she...(btw: the supporting male roles were so plentiful that he was sadly overlooked...just as Dennis Quaid was...who imho gave the best performance of the year..am i rambling? hmmm..). I also didn't mind Natalie Wood in West Side Story...It was a rather wooden role but she still pulled it off..Well sorta..

If you represent the community in an accurate fashion I don't care what color you are...now if you pull a micky rooney ala Breakfast at Tiffany's, then we are fighting!!

but give whoopie a chance!! she is a wonderful actress who I highly doubt would give a performance that would lead people to think Celia was african american...what do you think they are going to do? re-invent her history? claim she was born in Florida, a descendent of slaves? i doubt that..

who knows, Cleo has been misrepresented forever. there are a few cleopatras, but the most famous one that we know of was not actually a beautiful woman like she is made to be in the movies. when they refered to her 'beauty' they meant her charm and wit was superior. so it's very easy to see how certain images and perceptions of who the ancient egyptians are can be distorted by racist scholars and media. for God sakes they wouldn't even let blacks play in the opera Aida (an ethiopian princess captured by the Egyptians) they had instead Sophia Loren play the part in a movie with brown makeup and a kinky wig.

They must have been the only country to end slavery after the U.S. I was saying most of the slaves went to Brazil. What's the difference if it's a black latina or a black american? Would you care if a Tatiana Ali (A Black latina) played a black american singer like, let's say Josephine Baker or Patti LaBelle in a movie? Did you care when Salma Hayek played a Dominican in "In The Time of Butterflies" or when Jennifer Lopez played a Mexican in "Selena" or when Jennifer Beals plays white people in movies?

The US was right in the middle. last was DR, Cuba, Columbia and then Brazil. but it does matter who plays her as is obvious by the cuban's response.

This shit is ridiculous. Who the fuck cares? Whoopi can act her ass off and that's all that matters. I guess they would want someone like J. Lo to play her...just because she's Latina? WTF ever! Cubans, Ricans, and everyone else from the islands need to realize that they are black people too (that just so happen to speak Spanish). I say do ya thug dizzle, Whoopi!!! headbang

Okay Pimpin...I agree papi!
As I am proud to be Black, I am also proud to be Latino!

I will not deny who I am 100%
I will not claim 'African American' because I am NOT!
But I will say this, I am 'Black-Latino'...because my family has roots from Africa, I also have family that was born and raised in Cuba and In The Dominicana!

So lets stop all the ignorance, who ever plays Celia, BETTER PLAY HER GOOD!

she chose Whoopi, so lets give her a chance...Whoopi is amazing and one of the most brillant actress(es) in HOLLYWOOD of the past and present!!!

were all mixed in heritage, and one race is no greater than others.
