Top five concerts you have attended?

Allowing only for one Prince concert , what are the top five gigs you have been to? Mine are:

1. Prince. The Emporium , London 1985 ( Gold Tour Aftershow )
2. Brian Wilson. Apollo Theatre , Manchester 2002 ( Pet Sounds Tour )
3. The Smiths. Gloucester 1986 ( The Queen Is Dead Tour )
4. The Jam. Apollo Theatre , Manchester 1982 ( Final Tour )
5. Happy Mondays. The Hacienda , Manchester 1988

Good question. I've seen so many good ones, it's hard to say. In no particular order:

Prince - Celebration Night 5. Self-explanatory.

David Bowie - Roseland Ballroom NYC, June of last year. He did 'Low' and 'Heathen' in their entirety.

Bjork - House of Blues Chicago, May 17, 1998. Everyone left drained, laughing, crying and euphoric.

Tricky/PJ Harvey double bill - he was a new artist that I knew nothing about and I became a huge fan of both.

The Cure - June 10, 2001. I had waited over a decade to see my favorite band and it was a huge release once I finally did.

and of course there was the HBO Madonna concert.

I live in Manchester so it wasn't too difficult. I saw them a few times but this gig stood out amongst the others.

What was it like? When did you first see them? Did you ever see Joy Division too?

It must've been great to see them in their own environment.

First saw them in 86 at a local festival with SUPPORT!!! by the Smiths and The Fall amongst others. They were ok but they were better in 88 around the time of Technique with Happy Mondays supporting. I last saw them a couple of years ago and they were embarrassing unfortunately. Never saw Joy Division I was too young although I got to like them later.
Still see Hookey in the bars occasionally. He used to see one of my ex-girlfriends.He is looking his age now.

i'm not including any Prince concerts in this list because its just not fair to compare other performers to my favorite performer. so, with that said:

4) Fleetwood Mac-philadelphia, 2003

3) David Bowie-tower theatre, philadelphia, Heahthen Tour

2) U2-Elevation Tour, miami (opening night and closing night)

1) Janet Jackson-All For You Tour

1. Prince - Sign O' The Times Tour 1987 (Utrecht): My first big concert: I never forget the opening song and the way he came onto the stage, one of the most exciting moments in my life!

2. Lenny Kravitz - Utrecht 1989: he was just arriving on the scene and that show was so full of energy and sheer happiness!

3. Miles Davis - North Sea Jazz Festival (a few months before he died, I think it was 1991): Seen him twice, but the last time was extra special. I'll never forget how he came onto the stage: He was walking slowly (without looking to the audience) to the middle of the stage with his trumpet in his hand , in a very colorfull outfit, big sunglasses on, Mr. Cool himself.
When he arrived at the middle of the stage he stopped walking, turned his head in the direction of the audience and lifted his trumpet to greet us and a smile came to his face. The crowd went totally nuts, the standing ovation that followed was the most intense and heartfelt one I've ever witnessed. Truly a magic moment!

4. Me'Shell - North Sea Jazz Festival (1994?): The first time I've seen her and the best time. The band she had back then was magic, an unstoppable funk machine!

5. D'Angelo - North Sea Jazz Festival (2000?): Very funky performance in the tradition of the great funkmen, lots of raw energy from D' despite the fact that he was very, very stoned...
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

JANFAN4L

I went to quite a few UNFORGETTABLE concerts. Here's a rundown...

star #1
janet jackson's all for you world tour 2002
grand rapids, mi - van andel arena (1-30-2002)
Ticket price: 65.00
Hands down, THE BEST CONCERT OF MY LIFE. Amazing spectacle, huge set, dancing incredible. Everything you could want in an industry show. And my dream came true that night, I met Janet. She took me onstage during her "Would You Mind" segment. I KISSED JANET JACKSON'S NOSE, FOREHEAD AND MOUTH-MIC! THEN SHE KISSED ME! HER HAIR WAS ALL IN MY FACE AHHHHH!!!! I can't believe Janet took me onstage! It was like a surreal fantasy. When I kissed her on the mouth everybody in the arena screamed uncontrollably for like 5 minutes. PLUS, THE SHOW WAS 2 DAYS BEFORE MY BIRTHDAY! That was the best birthday present of all time. To meet my idol, oh dear god, I still can't believe that happened to me. I still have flashbacks from it and my body goes numb! It's not even over. Two months after the concert Janet sends a message to the Miss Janet fan club saying that she's looking for the guy from the Grand Rapids Tour Stop and they wanted my contact information. JDJ Entertainment and her attorneys contacted me and said that Janet PERSONALLY SELECTED my "Would You Mind" experience with her to be on her upcoming "Live In Hawaii DVD." I said I would love to be on it, so I signed a contractual agreement with her, her attorneys and Roger Davies. I can't believe she put me on the "Janet Live in Hawaii" DVD either -- that is crazy! Me and my friends are still tripping about that whole show until THIS DAY!!!! We still talk about it like it's new. I will never forget it. My "Would You Mind" experience with Janet is on the "Janet Live in Hawaii DVD." Look for me. She sent me a card in the mail that read, "With Compliments -- Janet Jackson." I'm dead. UNFORGETTABLE is an understatement!

#2
janet jackson - the velvet rope world tour
inglewood, ca - great western forum (8-1998)
Ticket price: 50.00
This was my first ever Janet concert. I grew up idolizing Janet and watching her videos on TV, but this was the first time I saw her live and it was unforgettable! The whole thing was crazy. It so much fun and I still have my glowstick!

#3
meshell ndegeocello
hollywood, ca - the roxy (6-2002)
Ticket Price: 25.00 (but I got in for free)
I had interviewed Meshell for my college's newspaper 2 months before this show and her manager offered me free tickets. Meshell is awe-inspiring live. She performed all the songs I love from her 4 albums. Plus, during quite a few points in the show, the music was so transcendent that my eyes started to water and tears fell from my eyes. It was such a beautiful concert, and that band! Dear god they were jamming. I met Meshell afterwards and she was very humble and signed my Cookie CD. I have never been to a concert like that before. It was so aural and the vibe was so good.

#4
n.e.r.d. with special guests kelis, kenna & spymob
hollywood, ca - house of blues (6-2002)
Ticket Price: 20.00 (bought from scalper)
Great, hyper, live show. They performed all their hits. The crowd was very ecclectic (some rock heads, some hip hop heads, pop heads, etc.) So many young kids there and different races, it was like the rainbow coalition in there. Different. Kelis was the highlight for me. She sung "Popular Thug" and "Junkie" plus she autographed my Wanderland CD. My favorite part of the show is when I waved my "Wanderland" CD in the air to her onstage and she responded back with "I see you baby! I love you! Thank you!" That was great! Visit my Kelis site @ http://www.geocities.com/kelisfan

#5
alana davis
hollywood, ca - the roxy (8-2002)
Ticket price: 10.00
Alana performed a solo acoustic set. It was very intimate. She talked with the audience and sung a variety of songs from her two albums -- Blame It On Me & Fortune Cookies. I was so happy to see her because I never have. It was such a geeking experience for me. She looked at me several times and winked at me when I applauded her after announcing she was leaving Elektra Records. Also, she's so real. Some idiot was being rude and was holding a conversation at the bar totally being rude while Alana was onstage performing. So she stop her song, told them to be quiet and gave them the finger. We all applauded!! WAY TO GO, Alana! Wish she had a band backing her so the songs would sound extra amazing. But just seeing her live was all I needed. When she sung "Easy To Love" (one of my all time favorite Alana songs) tears started to formulate (I notice I cry a lot at shows..lol).

#6
res
hollywood, ca - key club (7-2002)
Ticket price: FREE show
I thought I was never going to make it to this show because I got lost on the freeway and didn't know where the Key Club was. I got to the show extra late and I thought I had missed everything, but I didn't! She was so great live! Her band was working overtime and were cranking out the jams. She sang all her songs from "How I Do" and a worthy rendition of AC/DC's "Back In Black." She wore a belly-bearing mid-rift shirt. I loved "They-Say Vision" live and I got free stuff, so it was a nice show. CAN'T BEAT A FREE GIG, man.

#7
meshell ndegeocello
detroit, mi - st. andrew's hall (11-2-2002)
Ticket Price: 20.00
The second time I saw Meshell in a year. It was a great show. The vibe was wonderful and Meshell delivered as always. It was the first time I took my friend to see Meshell and he loved it. I loved "Fellowship" and "God.Fear.Money." Great concert! I even met K'Alyn.

I WILL NEVER, NEVER EVER FORGET THESE SHOWS. THESE WERE SOME OF THE BEST CONCERTS OF MY DAMN LIFE!

1. Prince - Hit N Run 2001. Damn near broke my back, I was dancing all night long. Had to call in sick the next day!

2. Paula Cole - Amen Tour. That girl blew me away with her voice. I was stunned. I couldn't speak for hours after the show. I almost gave up making music. She is an incredible singer live, her albums dont do her voice justice. Not to mention that she writes and produces her stuff.
worship

3. Tori Amos - Dew Drop Inn tour. Just her and the piano, or the harpsichord. So much power in that. Little Amsterdam just about gave me an orgasm.

4. Duran Duran - Electric Theater '89. Hard to chose a favorite Duran show. So many different reasons. This one really affected me. It was like a dream. But, 87 was my first concert ever, and I had eye contact with Nick when I saw the Meddazaland show.

5. Sade - Lovers Live. Excellent. Smooth. Sexy and classy. The perfect balance between music and lighting/ effects. Nothing was overdone. She danced a little here and there. The show was beautiful and India Arie opened.

cry I've never seen Bjork, but I'm sure her show would be on my top 5 list.

Honorable mentions:

Prince Jam of the Year tour. I was way in back, all the way back and everybody was on their feet the whole time, singing along. It was great.

Tori and Alanis 6 1/2 weeks tour. I was shaking the whole time. My friend and I were siting there as Tori's set was ending and it was enough! We looked at each other and said "Alanis is next! OMG!!!"

Living Coulour - Times up tour. I met them afterwards. Love Corey. love

Ah, so many more. Going to a concert is my FAVORITE thing to do.

Lemme preface by saying that I can't remember the name of all the tours. Or I get them mixed up. Anyways...

1) U2 - Elevation...that one was easy. Hands down practically a spiritual experience. Worth the ticket price that had me sweating for awhile.

2) Sade - Lover's Rock Tour? It was worth the wait which was more than 8 years since that was my first time seeing her live. She's amazing, Sweetback was jammin', the backdrop was wonderful and fit the mood of the music. Made me crazy enough to want to continue to believe in love.

3) Maxwell - On my birthday in 1998. It felt like a dream. It was quite an etheral experience. I wish I could meet him and give him a hug. Or keep him for awhile...sorry! Mellowsmoothe and more...

4) Third Eye Blind - I've seen them numerous times, with a couple more coming up next month, but I would have to say the first time I saw them was in Oct 1998 in Berkeley. I was way in the back, but I felt the energy from the band and the fans, which was contagious. Since then, I've seen them many more times, met lots of fans in person and online, ultimately and the band.

5) D'Angelo - If you have never seen him...whoohooo you are missing alot. That was an extremely hot show. I'm still surprised that he was able to run around offstage and return with his pants still on. Performed the entire show shirtless...yes it was a hot night.

6) New Edition - 1987? First concert ever, I think. Well at the least the first one that I was allowed to go without adult supervision. Nearly lost my mind at that show. Jumping on the seats and stuff. I miss them!!! Let's sing it together "Can You Stand the Rain..."

7) S.F. Symphony Black & White Ball 2003 - India.Arie & The Emotions...old school and new school under one roof I love both acts and I was just the happiest dateless attendee that night. India.Arie is my inspiration for expressing my inner thoughts.

7) Audioslave (2003) - I wasn't expecting anything less than spectacular. With Chris Cornell's soulful screams and Tom Morello's mindblowing work on guitar was enough of a reason for me to go. It was perfect timing that they were in S.F. when the anti-war protests were in full swing.

8) Rage Against the Machine - The last tour before the breakup. I was actually scared to go since I've never been to a hard rock show before. At least we stayed in the seats and let the moshers do their thang. It was a great show and I'm glad I caught that before the split.

9) Nikka Costa - I discovered her music after seeing her perform live at a benefit concert. She was funky and tearing it up. Words can't express how amazing her band was as well. I've seen them twice since the benefit concert and have not been disappointed. I can't wait until she comes back with some new material. Unfortunately she was prolly overlooked by most, but she's a powerhouse.

I know there's one more major concert that has left an impact on me, but my mind is now focused on work, so that's where I must be.
