All Time Musical Icons VH1 created a list of the top 200 icons of all time. Never mind the fact it sucked, (Oprah was #1 and JLo ranked higher than Ali if that tells you anything) I was trying to think of who would be on the list if it was just the top 10 and limited to the music world. I'll list mine in a sec but first make sure you understand the guidelines. These aren't your favorite musicians. These are icons in the sense they transcended their music and made an impact on pop culture as a whole. That said mine are as follows:
1. Elvis 2. The Beatles 3. Michael Jackson 4. David Bowe 5. Frank Sinatra 6. Madonna 7. Prince 8. Run-DMC 9. Jimi Hendrix 10. Ozzy Osbourne [This message was edited Fri Jul 25 8:36:11 PDT 2003 by intha916] Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

We are losing site of what an icon is. It's not just enough to make some cool songs. Icons become bigger than the music itself. People that aren't even fans of the music know something about an icons life. Trust me, the Ramones are not icons. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

I couldn't pick her out of a crowd. at least 80-90% of people would know an icon at first sight. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

If you'd have seen the reaction she got at the Q awards late 2001 when she gave her first public appearance in eight years, I bet you would reconsider. You can be an icon within the industry as well as outside of it.

You are trying to redefine what an icon is. There are many performers who have large loyal followings who aren't icons. An icon becomes larger than life. There are a lot of performers I love too but aren't going to call them icons if they aren't. I knew this would happen. People always want to put their personal taste into a subject like this. This isn't about musical tastes or who we think is cool. This is about icons or if you will mega stars that transcends music. Can you honestly say Kate Bush transcends her music? Yes. She's just very quiet about it. If people were asked who were the truly great british female music artists/singers they would think of Kate Bush, Dusty Springfield and...er, well, you tell me.

Point is she has not become part of pop culter. I just think we are looking at this with a different idea of what an icon is. It's cool though. Have a good weekend. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

There's more to music than America, you know. Actually thats a good point. Although this is the place where most come to make it big, I'm sure there are a lot of "icons" in the asian world we never heard of. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

Funny how peeps freak out when variations of these threads come up. It's meant for as many peeps to participate as possible, not just one person list it all. It's cool to dissect and debate whether somebody is worth of being on a list, but sometimes it goes on a deep end.
Going back to the topic at hand: James Brown The Doors...more likely Jim Morrison Janis Joplin U2 Aerosmith Fleetwood Mac...with an edge to Stevie Nicks Buddy Holly Tina Turner Marvin Gaye The Beach Boys hopefully I didn't include any repeats. I was rushing. "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

Mother of country music (the coal miner's daughter herself), she started the female country icon and paved the way. These people go far beyond just good songs or albums, they cross genre lines. Nirvana - Well, not my fave at all but after seeing the display in the rock-n-roll hall of fame, they did usher in a new movement that changed music. Take them or leave them, i don't mind. You can add Tina Turner if you take away the Nirvana boys ---------------------------------

Sly Stone,Parliament FUnkadelic,R.Kelly,Rick James,Lionel Richie,Smokey RObinson,Berry Gordy,Quincy Jones,Earth,Wind&Fire,Sam Cooke,Jackie Wilson.Arguments IMHO can Be made for all.in my Lifetime no matter what you think or stand on Him as a Artist nobody defines Icon like Michael Jackson when it comes to the Music Industry. You name it&MJ did it¬ to Mention His Impact is still felt 20 years later.nobody else can make that claim like MJ IMHO at least in my lifetime. mistermaxxx

Erm, what about the jazzists? You know the fellas (and fillies)... He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. - Albert Einstein
