Exclusive details on the upcoming Jamiroquai CD

Jamiroquai are almost finished recording their sixth album, tentatively titled 'Midnight Moon'.It will be released on Sony later this year,or most likely,in early 2004.In an interview last year, leader Jay Kay stated that he wants the next album "to sound like the first (album),with lots of strings and bass".The initial plan is for the band to return to the Old School sound of the first two albums. Here's a list of songs recorded so far...

"Shoot The Moon"
"Cannabliss"
"Midnight Moon"
"Funk Odyssey"

It seems odd that they would include a new song that shares the same title with their last album ("Funk Odyssey"),but it's probably an outtake from that project.A bandmember revealed that, for the last CD,they recorded twenty-five songs and Sony picked the ten tracks that they felt could be easily marketed. This time around, the guys wanna include songs that are more experimental.

A few of these songs are already circulating among fans, and the lyrics have been transcribed."Cannabliss" is said to be a strong song,a likely contender for first single.Check out the lyrics (keep in mind that these were *transcribed* from a fan hearing a poor-sounding bootleg copy)...

"Cannabliss" (first single?)---

It's taking me higher
Cannabliss will make you feel alright (2X)
Bust that shit!
Uhhh...
Get down...

Whatcha doing swinging on the juice of violence?
20% of you could be as high as everybody else
Pack your shit,space to rule
Free your mind, now race that guess,so you can sit in Cannabliss
And if you're harder and stronger
And let me do the rest
I get my kicks from tricks
I know my mind is playing this
I hear sweet music, and it sounds good on the stereo
Dim the lights, the green lights on
You know I'm out,so I'm good to go

(chorus)
Taking me higher
Cannabliss will make you feel alright (2X)
Make you feel alright
Cannabliss,Canabliss

Ahh,I'm up in smoke,a mellow yellow in a purple haze
Light changes, you're afraid,I wanted in my dopehead daze
And time sweeps along the highway ever-evergreen
Sometimes it's who you don't know
What you don't see,what you don't see
Now get up,get down, and then my mind just glides around
I want to dance,I want to groove to that groovy sound
I hear sweet music, playing on the stereo
Dim the lights, the green lights on
You know I'm out and I'm good to go

(chorus)
Taking me higher
Cannabliss will make you feel alright (2X)
Make you feel alright
Cannabliss,Cannabliss

I thought Jay quit the music industry? Or are they just fulfilling their contract now?

Oh well, welcome back to him anyway. One of the few truly excellent live Pop performers under 40 in the business today.

No,Jay did not quit the industry...lol...last year,he was pissed at Sony and was threatening to retire from music (sound familiar? LOL).But,after taking an extended break, the band is back with a vengeance. They are currently on tour in Europe (it's called "The Midnight Sun" tour) and in-between gigs, they have been cutting tracks for the new CD.

Cool!. Jamiroquai was the first band I really got into in 1996 (when I was 14). I was a little dissapointed with their last two albums though - too commercial. But the news for the new one seems promising. I always say to young music listeners "if you like Jamiroquai, then you're on the way to liking good music!"

You know what? In 1996,I wasn't even a fan of Jamiroquai yet. They were riding high with their "Virtual Insanity" song and video, but I didn't even take the time to get into them.I feel like I missed out on what was probably a really exciting them for them and their fans.

I became a fan in 1999,when I heard their album 'Synchronized' being played at a record store.I asked the clerk what it was and she handed me the CD.

If it´s true that they are returning to their old sound, it´s great news.
I only like the two first albums by Jamiroquai, "Emergency On Planet Earth" and "Return Of The Space Cowboy". I was dissapointed by every album ever since. I still bought them, but it just wasn´t the same. Saw them in concert last year and it was awful compared to their wonderful concerts I witnessed in 1993/1994.

The main difference between the first two albums ('Emergency On Planet Earth' and 'Return Of The Space Cowboy') and the three albums that came after is in the structure of the songs. The early albums consisted of long, meandering "jams" and not alot of hooks and catchy melodies.Beginning with the third album 'Traveling Without Moving',the guys began composing radio-friendly songs that are catchy and fun.Artistic and clever, but much more commercial.I think the new CD might be a combination of those two strategies.

Cool. I love Jamiroquai. A lot of people slept on Synchronized, and their last album went unnoticed in the US.I hope they're a bit more successful state-side with this new project.

Well, I don´t agree. Songs like "When You Gonna Learn", "Mr. Moon" or "Too Young To Die" are very radio-friendly. For me, the main difference between the first two albums and the other ones is, that, starting with "Travelling Without Moving", their sound became much more electronic-discopop-orientated, whereas before, it was pure, handmade F.U.N.K.

Interesting analysis. To my ears, the main difference between the first two albums and the three that followed them is the source of musical inspiration. The early albums contained more jazzy funk and soul elements. By Travelling Without Moving, disco elements began to creep into Jamiroquai's music, and IMO it's Jay Kay's insistence on trying to be the next KC and the Sunshine Band that has corrupted Jamiroquai's sound (and subsequently cost him the stateside audience he acquired via "Virtual Insanity" -- a song like "Canned Heat" never stood a chance on US radio).

Still, there is something to appreciate and enjoy on all of their albums to date.

Needless to say, though, I think Jay's decision to return to what is in my mind their 'classic sound' is very encouraging. Who knows -- he may even find a substantial US audience again with this new release.

I have their first 2 albums. I remember when they burst onto the scene in 1993 and everyone was talking about Jay. He really came up with the goods.

I didn't like 'Travelling Without Moving', but am proud to say I bought the 'Virtual Insanity' single way before it became the anthem it is now... even if I did only buy it for the David Morales remix of Space Cowwboy biggrin

Shoot The Moon is great.

I thought they'd lost it for a while on the album before the last - and at first I thought Funk Odyssey was a bit too formulaeic, but it's such a strong LP I couldn't help loving it.

I'm looking forward to what they have coming.

Jamirioq is cool, I enjoyed a few of his.. I hope he gets a little more experimental on this one, and not so "like his other records". Be inventive with the drums, he is lacking that, cause all his beats are pretty common sounding

Good point. It'll be intersting to see how well the new CD does.Jamiroquai's biggest problem in the U.S. is that their record label (Sony) doesn't know what to do with them.Jay complained that,in his view,'Synchronized' was an R&B album that should have been marketed as such.Sony instead treated it as pop album.Jay originally wanted Busta Rhymes to remix the track "Supersonic",which could have expanded their audience. The same thing happened with 'A Funk Odyssey',a kickass album that Sony didn't know what to do with. With strong, powerful songs like "Love Foolosophy","Picture Of My Life" and "Corner Of The Earth",that album deserved much more success.

So,I take it that you've heard the bootleg version that is floating around? Is it a live version or a studio version? The band has been performing it on their summer tour.
