Is Macy Gray over?

Macy Gray's new CD 'Trouble With Being Myself' sold just 24,000 copies in it's first week, reaching Number 44 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart (2001's 'The Id' debuted at Number 11).I really love Macy,so I am really concerned for her career.Just a few years ago,she was doing fine...winning Grammys, appearing in hit films like "Training Day" and "Spiderman",and selling millions of records. Now,it seems that she has reached a crossroad after only three albums. Is this the end for Macy Gray?

What do you think? Is this just a temporary career slump? Keep in mind that many artists aren't selling like they used to because of file-sharing,the radio dominance of hip-hop and young acts and other factors.Or,do you think Macy just needs a new producer,a new direction,or better songs?

She had a moment but no staying power.
Few have these days.
D'Angelo?
Maxwell?
Erica Baduh?

They all record great debuts and then turn into Terence Trent D'Arby's.

I guess it depends on whether shes into having hits or making art. Look at Princes 3rd album! and how that sold and then turned it around. The difference of course is that Prince had a strong focus on changing his sound and look whereas Macey is still stuck on the same forula. Shame.

Well, it didn't help that her cd was released over a month ago overseas, two months later in the States. Whoever wanted to buy it got it as an import. Then it was a heavy download (me) for those who were waiting on the US release.

Same thing happened to Cher's Living Proof cd. Thats why it looks like it didn't sell well after Believe. Releasing cds in the UK months before the US, is only going to hurt cd sales.

If the singles are released and remixed (a la Madonna), the cd has a fighting chance.

Good point! I never understood why Cher's 'Living Proof' CD was released months earlier in the UK.By the time it finally came out in the States, many fans had already downloaded it.It's actually a better album than 'Believe' but the early release may have hurt the overall sales.

DavidEye I never considered Macy a one-hit wonder. Her voice is so one-of-a-kind. On that alone, she should be a star. She sounds like no one else and can make a ballad pierce your soul (I still have the ballad "Still" in heavy rotation in my CD player. That's never gonna change.)
.

I think Macy veered into the Land of no Return when she started making appearances stoned. She was self-destructing. Plus some of the sentiments on her second album are pathetic/scary -- as if she needs psychotherapy.

She wasn't edited well and she is a personality that needs some censors (and censure)! -- at least until the medication kicks in.

Anyway, I loved her unique and Bohemian style so ... Macy needs to do something so that people will take her seriously again.

Nobody wants a druggie with a great voice. Ask Whitney.

I bought the import & thought it was just kinda dull except for a few exceptions. Not enough exceptions to stretch over the dull spots.
I've been amazed the reviews have been so positive.
Seems like the critics are going easy on her this time.

How many songs has she written about killing people?
At least two.
Is there a murder song on The Id?

I think that people weren't ready 4 Macy Gray in the 1st place.

I love Macy to death, I love how NO1 can label her shit. Thats the reason why I respect her so damn much. It would be a damn shame if "SHE" thought that she won't make it in this industry.

But then again, something tells me that Macy will get her dues at the end of this mess nod

D'ANGELO aint no one hit wonder, evenif he doesn't realise another album for 10 years he will still be ledgend

as for Maxwell he has had 3 hit albums, his last one went to number 1 and platinum and he had a number 1 hit with Fortunate (my jam)
as for Macy Gray, I liked her I.D album
This new album, seems like Macy is listening to her label and making M.O.R pop rock because the I.D flopped but this new album is an even bigger bomb
She'll probably get dumped by her label

I think Macy is a great artist. A big reason her album hasnt done to well is because you could download it three months before it was availble..

And Erikica Badu just had a top ten song, not to mention the fact that her live album and "Mama's Gun" sold pretty well. I mean, Macy's sales are laughable compared to that

I think its too early to say she's finished. Record sales
don't always tell the story. Airplay on the radio is
more important. She got the airplay early in her career
and exposure. Now she's in a slow period. that deosn't mean
she's through.

i thought she was unique. is she the best singer around.
Hell NO! but neither was Sade.

madonna's always been BIg but i've never thought she was
that great of a singer. but that hasn't meant doodley-squat.

let's see how Macy does in the years ahead...b4 we write
her off!

I'm interested in checking out her latest. I really enjoyed her performance at Glastonbury this year, as I have enjoyed her the other 2 times I've seen her.

From what I'm reading, she's sobered up a bit which I think will really help her out in the long run. I think she's unique and has the potential to continue making good music for a long time. I'm not so sure she'll ever match the commercial success of her 1st album, but I don't think that'll mean she's 'over.'

I hope Macy isn't over. I will definitely buy her new cd. We all know that it doesn't matter how many records one sells, that doesn't mean it's good or bad. She is unique and she does not get by on her fake tits and skimpy clothes. I think she might be a bit of a flake, but at least she's unique and I don't have to see her half naked all the time like most other female singers.
