"janet." album - 10th year Anniversary

It has been 10 years since Janet blessed us with 1993's Janet. The album is Janet's most successful selling well over 16 million copies worldwide. Plus 4 #1 Billboard singles. "Anytime, Anyplace" remains the longest running #1 R&B song of the 90s on the Billboard charts. Can't forget the videos "If" "You Want This" and "Again." Outstanding album. Share your memories here.

Now, THAT picture should be called "Lucky Hands". I first saw it on a billboard in LA and almost crashed my car.

The album? Yeah, it was great. Janet's best. Sleek and sexy. In fact, I prefer it to the two she's released since.

I love the ballads on this cd. "Where Are You Know" should have been released as a single.

The 1993 nose isn't her original one either.

I think Rhythm Nation has dated a little in production values, so aside from that I'd say this is her best album... but like all Janet's albums aside from Control (consistently great) and All For You (consistently awful), it seems to drift off into a bit of nothing by the end. It's simply not worth bothering by the time 'Where Are You Now' finishes.

If there's anything I'd like Janet to do in the future, it would be drop Jam & Lewis, and no more interludes.

I really enjoy this album, even if I like 3 of her albums more. "This Tims" still remains my favorite song of hers, and a top 10 song of all time for me. "Where Are You Now" and "Throb" got some airply despite not being officially released as singles, and deservingly so, as they both are standout tracks. This album also contains one of her worst songs, in my opinion, in "The Body That Loves You."

nod I want to make a version of the album without the overlong interludes, particularly at the end. I'd like to add the B-sides as well, since those were fantastic. "One More Chance," "And On and On" and "'70s Love Groove" are superb!

"And On and On" got quite a bit of airplay here in Detriot. Excellent jam. Like the album but not as much as "The Velvet Rope" and "All For You". Sorry.

I'm from Detroit originally- it DID get a ton of play. I don't like it as much as "The Velvet Rope," "All for You" and especially "Rhythm Nation 1814," but I love it anyway.

I wonder why "Where Are You Now?" was never released as a single. That's a GREAT song and it received alot of radio airplay in my area.

That cover has a life of it's own
That album was the soundtrack to the summer of 93 and 94

This album is great... and I can't fucking believe it is 10 years old, I remember buying it on the day of release. Shit, time flies...

The best bits:

"That's the way love goes"
"New agenda"
"Where are you now"
"Body that loves you"
"Anytime anyplace"

The worst bits:

the interludes
"whoops now"

Definitely one of Janet's greatest moments though. From Rhythm Nation through to Velvet Rope had some really great music.

Such a shame "All for you" was such a turd. I wish Janet's music had grown up with her audience... so sad to see her still chasing the teenybopper audience, the Britney generation nowadays.

My favorites on "janet." are...

-You Want This (love the video in the desert)
-If (the breakdown is the tightest part of the song)
-This Time (love the operatic Kathleen Battle, wish they made it a single)
-What'll I Do (even though she was sued by the Rolling Stones b/c of this song and lost, I still love it and wished it was a domestically released single)
-Funky Big Band (This song is like "Alright" Part 2, in a good way. It's the continuation of "Alright." I can see why they didn't make a video though, they didn't want to make it seem like Janet was rehashing the same album themes -- 1940's new jack swing-swing grooves)
-New Agenda (Chuck D's rap was hot. I like this song because it asserts Janet's identity: "African American woman, I stand tall with pride." Around '93, Michael Jackson's persona was creeping around Janet's and I feel she had to let be known that she was proud to be black. The L.A. Riots also happened around this time and she's from L.A. -- I know she was born in Gary, but let's face it, Janet basically grew up in Southern California -- so I think subconsciously she was influenced by all these events.)
-Where Are You Now (Great song. Was going to be released as a single and was going to be the song that closed the "janet." album but was never released because Virgin didn't want to overmilk the project.)
-That's The Way Love Goes (So hot, this song was memorable for me because she made her first single an R&B groove, not some dance-euphoro-pop number. So it's hot for that.)
-Whoops Now (I love the happiness of this song. It's very refreshing. The album has all this sexuality and then she busts out with this intentionally playful/wistfully corny fun number for her and her friends. It's cute and trademark Janet.)
-Throb (This was the dance jam of '93. It was so hot in the clubs back then. The mixes were fierce and it could've been really big if it were released as a single.)

I consider the "janet." album to be Janet's "Now" compliation for the sheer number of radio-ready singles on this album. It's chock full of so many hits that she can basically tape all of the songs on a dartboard throw a dart and have a hit. It was just J&L at the peak of their pop powers. They were riding high from Control to Janet. The Velvet Rope was when she took a decidedly introspective turn. I think Janet was happy with Rene during this time, but I think right after this album the falling out started to occur. There's a lot of pleasure on this album from Rene, but when TVR dawns on us in '97 we see the sinister/dark/business side of Rene, culminating in divorce.

I agree. I hope her next CD is more mature with live instruments. AFY was ok in my opinion.
