If I can make a suggestion go with the following releases:

- James Brown "Foundations of Funk" (2CD)
- James Brown "Funk Power 1970"
- James brown "Make It Funky - The Big Payback" (2CD)
- The JB's "Funky Good Time: The Anthology" (2CD)

They are great from 1st track to last. A musical funk trip!

I'll look for these and "Startime" and compare. Thanks Borabora and WonHungLo.

Ok as for as George Clinton and James Brown they both have their good and bad. Both are living legends.

This is suppose to be about owning a JB lp. How can you be a Prince fan not own any JB or like him for that matter.??

Some of Prince songs have copied him note for note. Let's say The Work , Pretty Man and other tunes have his guitar work. Prince imitates his dance steps ,screams etc.

Let me put it this way any fan of Prince should be hip to James Brown and the JB's, P-Funk,Bootsy,Fred Wesley and The Horny Horns featuring Maceo Parker, Sly and the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles. Prince is a mesh of all their styles.

Now Prince has got both a taste of James Brown/P-Funk(Maceo) and Greg Boyer (P-Funk) in his live band. You got to dig James Brown he is the DNA of funk!

Fuck what you heard on the radio , check out his huge catalog it includes some of the funkiest shit ever!! You will be speechless and schooled.

But you dont think the same could be said of Sly Stone's influence on him?

No doubt, there is a lot of Sly in Prince. But the approach Prince takes in directing his bands is 100 percent James Brown.

UBQUITY I LOVE YA, BUT I DISAGREE WITH ONE THING YOU SAID, BROWN IS A BAD LYRICIST, NO WAY:WHAT ABOUT SONGS LIKE "GET UP ,GET INTO AND GET INVOLVED" AND "TALKIN LOUD AND SAYIN NOTHING (PRINCE DOES THAT) THOSE ARE DEEP LYRICS OR BALLADS LIKE "WHO AM I" AND "I'LL GUESS I'LL HAVE TO CRY" MR BROWN WAS A SOULFUL BALLADER ONE SO MUCH THAT HE WAS UNDERATTED VOCALLY.

I totally agree. I guess I was referring to the lack of "beauty" and "harmony" within his lyrics. Aint no doubt about his message -- but JB's lyrics are of overwhelming simplicity, sometimes they even come across as naive... like those a child would write... which makes them beautiful I guess...
So again, you are right, bro!

YOU MIGHT LIKE AN ALBUM THAT JAMES BROWN DID CALLED "SHO IS FUNKY DOWN HERE". I BET YOU'LIKE THAT- SEARCH IT OUT, PLEASE!

It's one of my favorites. The way he plays the clav through a distortion --- a mindblower. One of his best instrumental albums. The title track has been sampled by "Brand Nubian" in "One for all" back in 1992...

first of all, how utterly patronizing can some of you be? where do you get off telling people what they should buy/listen to?

I didnt to that. I was simpy recommending some albums for people who want to get into it but dont know what to begin with.

Now for the people who diss James, disbelief, shame on you all.

I wouldnt go that far. But anybody who respects and admirers the beauty of black music but doesnt get into James Brown should reconsider his/her position and study him a little bit more.

That being said, i own a greatest hits album by him & a couple of 45s, that's it. I really respect the man, he *is* (always will be) the godfather, but I'm no fanatic, shoot me.

Thats cool. You give him the props he deserves.

How can u argue GC v. JB?

Both r amazing funk pioneers. I mean, GC inherited the best part of JB's band! They compliment each other. How can u like 1 and diss the other?

Any1 who doesn't own ANY JB, should do thenselves a favour - preferably on vinyl. (Just listend to "James Brown Sings Raw Soul" last night. Wow.)

BTW, those dissing '80s JB: what about Rapp Payback?
"We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

"That's becuase we're soulless auttomatons"

I havent been dissin George at all. I have said I dig him. I have just explained to someone who claims that JB's funk is "shallow" that he should better re-evaluate his position when he talks shit like that and gives George all credit.

lol Good one!
Because the DJ of a Soul-radio station came up with that name in the early 70s. They werent any pure "funk"-stations back than...
Besides, JB was a soulsinger before funk was even invented.

But later, he was called "The minister of new new heavy funk".

Not that definitions matter...

Live performance is just part of the whole. When talking about influence it goes beyond live performance into the music too. Yes, we all know Prince has done JB homages (band direction and musically) many times in his almost 30 year career.
