Explain to me how I contradicted myself. It makes perfectly good sense if you don't assume what I'm saying (which is what you did). What I wrote, I meant...word for word-strictly verbatim. All music is black music, but "punk" (the culture) is a different genre all together that has been morphed by white people. Just like "hip-hop" is a predominately black-based culture. | |

Look, the way I see it is that music is music. If there's a genre of music that you like then just go with that. Yes, I'm a black young adult, but who's to say what I should listen to? hmmm? I like Punk, Post-Punk, New Wave and the like cuz it's the kind of music that makes me happy and is very enjoyable to my ears. By the same token I can also dig other sounds like Hard Rock, Jazz, Funk, Hip-Hop, Reggae, etc. I was raised to appreciate all styles of music. I can dig whatever sounds good. But see this is aboiut more than music. Punk is not just about music to many, it's an attitude. It's a manner. It's a way of saying "F*** You!" to conformity and being a rebel.
And yes, I did get my share of unwanted critcisms (not just from peers but family as well) but if I were to try and conform then I wouldn't be myself. And the worse thing you could ever do is not be yourself. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE. | |

It's no different from wearing throwbacks and rags, to me, although I'd never go "punk." It's a style, not necessarily an indication of trying to be something you're not. Take that to its logical conclusion, and black people shouldn't wear Hilfiger, Polo, Burberry, etc. Those were items associated with preppy white folks. Now, hip-hop has embraced it.
