Best Bass Players Of All Time....

I got into a very spirited discussion with a buddy of mine who happens to be a bass player..He thinks that Bootsy is "okay" and that Larry Graham is overrated. What are your thoughts and here's my list of my favorite bass players of all time. In no particular order...

1.Victor Wooten
2.Larry Graham
3.Bootsy Collins
4.Foley
5.Terry Lewis
6.Prince
7.Stanley Clarke
8.Robbie Shakespeare
9.Sting
10.Flabba Holt
11.George Duke
12."Familyman" Barrett
We run tings, tings nah run we....

Prince definately would not be on my list and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers definately would be. Bootsy Collins is definately a great bass player. I like him better than Mr. Graham.

I feel that Larry Graham is over-rated. I feel Rhonda Smith is a much better bass player.

Personally, I feel John Taylor and Bernard Edwards (Duran Duran and Chic) are under-rated.

Prince ahead of Stanley Clarke? Even P would disagree with that!

I really like your list. Victor definitely deserves number 1. I would NOT put Flea or Sting on the list. I personally do like Prince's styles, the Bass grooves of his I really dig may be subtle sometimes, but they are effective. Songs like Madhouse 6 1/2 (not sure if he did the bass, I think he did), and of course, What's My Name I think demonstrate that he's no slouch, and he certainly has played it enough over the last 25 years.

I would add Jaco Pastorius to the list. I would also add Jamiroquai's bass player, who's name escapes me at the moment. As for Rhonda Smith, I have her Intellipop CD, and I think she's pretty good. I don't know if I would put her on this list though. I'd have to think about that. For the most part, you don't hear much of her.

They're not in order, he said.

George Duke plays the bass? And where would you rank Louis Johnson?

Paul McCartney should get recognition for his input in the beatles as a bass player, he had some amazing moments with his bass with the group.. "The Beautiful... Helter Skelter... ect.."

Ubiquity

I cant believe so very few people actually mention Charles Mingus.

And Sweet Charles Sherrell!!! He was bass player with the James Brown Band in the 1960s right before Bootsy came in. Sweets is the innovator of the Funk bass, he came up with the slapping. Bootsy took most of his playing from him, and so did everybody else after that.

James Jamerson

How could we all forget this cat? People are still trying to figure him out.

For those who don't know, he was the bass player for Motown. Watch "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" and it will open your eyes.

Sometimes but that's not what he's known for.

I saw him live and he played note for note on the bass what he was speaking (for like 10 minutes). The only other musician I've ever heard do this was Frank Zappa. It takes skill beyond most musicians ability.
