When I think of disco I think of Donna Summer & co. And to me the Bee Gees just don't really fit into that category, that's all. And I never really disputed your position on soul singers it's just that I believe that there's a difference between being a soul singer and being soulful.

Saying the Bee Gees don't fit into the disco category is like saying George Clinton doesn't belong in Funk. I mean those cats were the poster boys for the disco era. Their album was what kicked the whole disco craze into full gear. Sorry but if the SNF isn't disco I don't see what is.

The Bee Gees have often said that, when they were compoing the 'SNF' songs, they were simply making R&B music.Their previous albums ('Main Course' (1975) and 'Children Of The World' (1976) ) consisted mainly of R&B/soul music, some of it even bordering on funk. But then they got asked to do the soundtrack for a Disco movie, and I think they were then considered a "disco band".The 'SNF' songs are undenably disco, but there is also alot of soul in those songs too, imo.

I can agree with that. The Bee Gees were very soulful but then again Disco's roots are in soul. What do you think makes a song "disco" ?

It's really hard to determine what exactly makes a song "Disco".In the late 70s,the Disco influence was so strong and it appeared on many songs that aren't really considered Disco (such as Paul McCartney and Wings' "Goodnight Tonight"(1979),The Rolling Stone's "Miss You"(1978),or ELO's "Shine A Little Love", from 1979).As for the Bee Gees,I don't consider them a disco band. After a couple of smooth R&B/pop albums in the mid-70s,they did a huge disco movie soundtrack, then went back to their unique mix of pop and R&B for the 'Spirits Having Flown' album (1979).I suppose, after 'SNF',they could have rode the Disco wave for a few more albums, but they were so much more than that.

Btw,Cloudbuster, didn't you say that the Bee Gees albums were gonna be re-mastered soon? Have you heard any more details?

Thanx for the support David and no, I don't know any more about the remasters. All I know is that shortly before he died Maurice was asked if there were any plans to remaster their back catalogue and he said it would happen soon. Universal have said pretty much the same (they're aiming for the end of this year,) so we'll just have to be patient, I suppose!

"Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me" - Peter Brown

A few weeks ago,I went out and bought his 'Fantasy Love Affair' CD (1978),which contains his two biggest hits "Do You Wanna Get Funky With It" and my favorite "Dance With Me".This guy had a really good sound. The other songs on the album are surprisingly mellow.

I manage to shout out this joint at least once a month here! biggrin

I didn't hear the rest of that album but I've read that it's got a Steely Dan vibe goin' on.

Listen to them again. They are both full blown disco songs. And for the record David I never said the Bee Gees were only a disco group. I was responding to cloud who said that More Than a Woman and Night Fever weren't really disco songs.

I never said that Night Fever wasn't disco. It's as close to disco as can be. There's just other artists who are far more disco than the Bee Gees. They're more of a pop/soul/funk/R&B hybrid.

Oh,I know you didn't say that they were only a disco group...lol...I was just doing one of my long, rambling posts, directed at no one in particular smile

Good point you made concerning Rick James."You And I" is definitely a borderline soul/disco song.

"Stayin' Alive & Nights On Broadway are R&B, Fanny (be tender with my love) & Too Much Heaven are soul ballads, Jive Talkin' & Love You Inside Out are funk, How Deep Is Your Love & More Than A Woman "

You're right. You never said Night Fever only MTAW. My bad. Still think MTAW is disco as well but sorry for misquoting you.

A Steely Dan vibe...yes,that's a good way to describe it.The other songs aren't really what I would call "disco".It's an interesting album that you should check out.And it contains the long, long, long version of "Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me" which seems to go on forever.Another great song is the third single "You Should Do It",which is reminiscent of "Dance With Me".

Peter Brown 'Fantasy Love Affair'

"A Fantasy Love Affair"
"Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me?"
"You Should Do It"
"The Singer's Become A Dancer"
"For Your Love"
"Dance With Me"
"It's True What They Say About Love"
"Without Love"

What do you think about Prince's "Just As Long As We're Together" being a disco song? I never really thought about it until a few years back when my wife, hearing the song for the first, time said "I never knew Prince did a disco song?" Next time I listened to it sure enough it did have a very disco feel to it. It has a very "Princely sound" but has the disco bass and tempo all the way through.

"Just As Long As We're Together" is definitely a Disco song, and I've always considered "Sexy Dancer" to be disco too, albeit a very funky disco song. But,I have this funny feeling that Prince himself probably wasn't too fond of disco.Did you ever hear the song "Disco Away" by the Rebels (a Prince side project from 1979)? The lyrics seem to attack disco music, although I don't know if Prince actually wrote it (I think Dez did).

hmmm "sd" teeters on the very brink of bein disco-ish, but i'd say it ain't. it's more funk than disco, imho.

Would be hard to debate because as you said, SD is on the "brink" of being disco. Or it could be Disco on the brink of being funk. It's one of these "tweener" songs like Rufus' "Do You Love What You Feel" that's hard to fit in one category. But then again how many Prince songs are there that cross into more than one musical style? At least half his stuff does this.
