Best DISCO Jams

As I posted on another thread, I've been on this disco kick lately. I've been making some disco cds to play in my ride. So far I have:

On The Radio, Last Dance - Donna Summer
Disco Nights - GQ
Boogie Nights - Heatwave
Boogie Oogie Oogie - Taste Of Honey
Night Fever, More Than A Woman - Bee Gees
Got to Be Real - Cherly Lynn
You and I - Rick James
Just as Long as We're Together - Prince
Shame - Evelyn "Champagne" King
Boogie Wonderland - EWF
Ladies Night - Kool & The Gang
Le Freak, Greatest Dancer - Chic

I was about 11 during the height of the disco craze and wasn't buying as many records back then. I had a few of those K-tel hits records with some Donna Summer, Bee Gees and Chic on it but outside of GQ and Kool and the Gang, I never really bought any full albums that wasn't funk. What are some other good disco songs? Nothing super cheesy like "YMCA" or "Born To Be Alive" I'm really interested in songs like "Just as Long as We're Together" by Prince, "Boogie Wonderland" by EWF and "You & I" by Rick James. Artists that put out a Disco sounding song because it was happening at the time even though they aren't thought of as a Disco act. Also some other good Donna Summer songs would be helpful.

It always bothers me that the Bee Gees are called disco. Sure they got played in the clubs but only Night Fever & You Should Be Dancing sound a little like disco.

Stayin' Alive & Nights On Broadway are R&B, Fanny (be tender with my love) & Too Much Heaven are soul ballads, Jive Talkin' & Love You Inside Out are funk, How Deep Is Your Love & More Than A Woman are pure pop and Tragedy is pretty much a rock song. shrug

WHAT the hell?! Night Fever a "little" like Disco? "More Than a Woman" pop? First off the pop sound then was disco but those songs you named are as disco as you can get. Not that there is anything wrong with that but damn. Next thing someone going to tell me Kate Bush is soulful tease

You know I have issues with your idea of what soul is but it's all in good fun lol But you do bring up a good point. What really is disco? I was thinking that when I was making my disco cds. I started to put "Goove Line" by Heatwave on there but it just didn't have the sound I think of when I think disco. It's really the way the basslines are arranged along with a combination of strings. And if there's a whistle in it look out lol

When I think of disco I think of Donna Summer & co. And to me the Bee Gees just don't really fit into that category, that's all. And I never really disputed your position on soul singers it's just that I believe that there's a difference between being a soul singer and being soulful.

An unknown one here- but Chicago's sole foray into disco resulted in a great jam called "Street Player". Great song.

See now I don't hear "Put Your Body In It" as a disco song. I have that jam and have loved it for years but it's just an R&B dance song to me. Thanks for the list though. Some real goodies on there but I'll leave "Native New Yorker" alone lol

In the late 70s,it was often difficult to determine if a song is "soul/funk" or "disco".For example, let's take a look at these songs...

"Get Off" by Foxy (1978)
"Ladies' Night" by Kool and The Gang(1979)
"Got To Be Real" by Cheryl Lynn (1978)
"Play That Funky Music" by Wild Cherry (1976)

Those four songs frequently appear on Disco compilations, but these songs also wouldn't be out of place on a 70s funk compilation.

The Bee Gees have often said that, when they were compoing the 'SNF' songs, they were simply making R&B music.Their previous albums ('Main Course' (1975) and 'Children Of The World' (1976) ) consisted mainly of R&B/soul music, some of it even bordering on funk. But then they got asked to do the soundtrack for a Disco movie, and I think they were then considered a "disco band".The 'SNF' songs are undenably disco, but there is also alot of soul in those songs too, imo.

I can agree with that. The Bee Gees were very soulful but then again Disco's roots are in soul. What do you think makes a song "disco" ?

You know,I thought of that song after I made my list...lol...and you are right, that song is indeed a mixture of R&B and disco. The long, extended version has alot of strings, making it sound much more "disco-sounding".

A few weeks ago,I went out and bought his 'Fantasy Love Affair' CD (1978),which contains his two biggest hits "Do You Wanna Get Funky With It" and my favorite "Dance With Me".This guy had a really good sound. The other songs on the album are surprisingly mellow.
